Linux and Windows
What's a good version of linux I can install and either use from within windows or at least on the same machine as windows without all the bugs and headaches? Do we have one yet?
It's been a while since I screwed around with Linux. . . . |

Ubuntu 7.10 is the best you can get pretty much. Still not 100% right but hopefully the next release will be less buggy.
If you have a second choice, I'd go with Fedora 8. |

Ubuntu is the "no doctor grade needed" version of Linux.

Ubuntu is the way to go. I installed it on a machine I use every day. I got a new hard drive and made the new hard drive the primary. I made the old primary (my windows hard drive) secondary. Then I installed Ubuntu on the new drive and set up grub (the bootloader) so it would ask me if I wanted to boot into linux or windows when the computer starts up. Installing it that way won't hose an existing windows installation. If you ever want to, you can just make your windows drive primary again and you won't lose a thing.

Unbuntu, Unbuntu, Unbuntu! I use it on my laptop and a local testing server.

Unbuntu is just the current hype distro. It doesn't really matter what distro you pick, its just all the noobs only know the word Unbuntu. Linux is Linux. You're not really going to learn much unless you force yourself to get comfortable with the command line anyway. Get yourself a copy of some virtual machine software to easily run any distro in windows to play around. Or you could download Knoppix and burn it to cd, its a nice live cd. Boot from the CD and you're in linux, don't need to install anything on your hard drive.

We use Fedora on all of our workstations and servers and I also install
it for grandmas who want to email cookie recipes. It's easy to use while still having all the Linux power under the hood easily accessible. The installation wizard will see the Windows partition and create a boot menu for you.

KNOPPIX is a bootable Live system on CD or DVD, consisting of a representative collection of GNU/Linux software, automatic hardware detection, and support for many graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI and USB devices and other peripherals. KNOPPIX can be used as a productive Linux system for the desktop, educational CD, rescue system, or adapted and used as a platform for commercial software product demos. It is not necessary to install anything on a hard disk!!! Due to on-the-fly decompression, the CD can have up to 2 GB of executable software installed on it (over 8GB on the DVD "Maxi" edition).

We use Fedora. If you want to run Windows Apps get Crossover Office. It will let you run MOST Windows apps under Linux.

just to add another little quick tid-bit...
do be careful on which OS you install, because once the bootsector on your hard drive gets written to with the loader, it can become quite a task to remove it ;-) |

Get either Fedora Core 8 or OpenSuSe 10.3. Then install Vmware Server and run your windows inside of it. I can boot my Windows XP in a vmware in just under 15 seconds. And yes that is with all the crap that starts on boot. Multiple IM's, etc.
