Get yourself a copy of some virtual machine software to easily run any distro in windows to play around. Or you could download Knoppix and burn it to cd, its a nice live cd. Boot from the CD and you're in linux, don't need to install anything on your hard drive.

I have used Free BSD, Open BSD, Solaris (Unix) and for a destop they suck big time... as servers they are good. Linux/gui was being developed at the same time and this BS about learning about the os and its prompt is somewhat a waste of time... every distro has their own methods and change operating methods very often... besides siting down and installing most of the "unix/gui", I have looked at and had run most of the linux/gui distros and I telling you even if you learn most of the prompt commands there are only so many commands that can be used from one distro to another.
Hype... no Ubuntu 7.10 is really good... very stable and free.
