Ubuntu is the way to go. I installed it on a machine I use every day. I got a new hard drive and made the new hard drive the primary. I made the old primary (my windows hard drive) secondary. Then I installed Ubuntu on the new drive and set up grub (the bootloader) so it would ask me if I wanted to boot into linux or windows when the computer starts up. Installing it that way won't hose an existing windows installation. If you ever want to, you can just make your windows drive primary again and you won't lose a thing.
