Would you get offended if a grocery cashier doesn't greet you?

You know when you're checking out your groceries at the cashier aisle... if the cashier greeted the person in front of you but then didn't greet you for whatever would you :

1. get offended but keep it inside and not say anything

2. get offended but speak up, perhaps say something like "Well, hi to you too" etc

3. Notice that he didn't even greet you but you wouldn't get mad

4. Not even notice at all because you don't give a fuck

Keep in mind that this situation is when a cashier greeted the person BEFORE you and you heard it, but for some reason didn't greet you.

Odd that this thread would be posted tonight.

An hour ago I went into a grocery store. Between the front door and the first 10 feet, I had 5 employees greet me and ask how I was doing..One right after the other. I had to step around the 5th one so I could proceed into the store.

While in the store I was greeted by an additional 3 employees....All asking me how I was doing.

It was pissing me off. The cashier simply asked if I found everything I needed but at that point I as so irritated y the rest of the staff that I was in a bad mood.

Any chance that the person not being greet was a different race than the cashier?

Just curious.

I'd rather have that then what I usually get as a greeting at stores.

The employee greats you, you respond and nothing back from them. Sometimes they seemed trained to ask how you are, how your day has been etc... but then when you give a reply and respond with a like question they don't even listen for a response. I'd rather hear nothing then have someone ask how I am when they obviously don't give a fuck. They do this at the bank too... they will say hello and ask how you are but by the time they finish talking they already have turned off the speaker and have no idea what you are saying until you press the call button. Yet they asked YOU a question.

Quoted so Bausch doesn't miss it. You just know she was tearing up inside.

Did it occur to you that perhaps the cashier has had conversations with that customer before? Maybe they just don't like you (easy to understand).

Yes, I'm a different race than the cashier, but so was the person in front of me and he got greeted.

I think at this particular store the cashiers are supposed to greet everyone.

If it makes you feel any better...

A couple weeks back I went to look at an apartment with my girlfriend. I was looking solely for myself. The rental agent did not look me in the eyes once throughout the whole meeting, it was probably a good 20 minutes at least. She would only look at my girlfriend.

Not a big deal. Strange, yes, but so is life...

I usually say hello first anyway. Sometimes, they don't say anything back but it doesn't bother me. I start thinking about all the shit that might be going on in their life--marriage problems, hate their job and have a jerk for a boss, cat died...

Saying hello to me might be the very last thing on their mind.

Either that, or they just have no manners, and I still don't give a rat's ass.

I expect such rudeness out of low-wage employees, esp. blacks and Mexicans. Mexicans are some of the rudest people and 95% of them do not know how to say thank you when you give them your money. Blacks have this annoying habit of standing around socializing with co-workers instead of waiting on you.

That probably wouldn't bother me. What DOES bother me is when I'm checking out and the cashier clearly looks at my card and then says "Thank you Mr.Stewart. Have a nice day."

That's patronizing bullshit at it's finest. If you don't know my name, say have a nice day or have a nice day sir. End it there. Don't call me by name like you KNOW me. Fuck I hate that.

I was thinking about this more and I was wondering if it could be discrimination as well? Perhaps because I look young for my age (ageism) or racial discrimination (because I'm asian) so the cashier assumed that I would be meek and timid and let them get away with this?

Also, I know the cashier doesn't have a relationship with the customer in front of me, they just chose to ignore me.

Also, no, I didn't have negative body language or anything like that. My body language was neutral.

Isn't that weird if the cashier greets everyone but ignores me specifically for whatever reason?

I was reading another topic on another board about discrimination so I was reminded of this incident and I got angry again. I'm still kind of annoyed at it.

I know this is an old topic, but I was just reminded of it and getting pissed off again...

Young looks, being dresser poorly and race perhaps as well can surely influence how you are treated at a store.

But it's rather connected with the fact that the seller doesn't expect you to spend much money, because you look young and are poorly dressed.

But a grocesy store, well it's something else.

If the person in front of me was greated but I weren't, then I'd probably notice it, but wouldn't lose sleep about it and wouldn't make a thread about it and wouldn't bump it 2 weeks later....

I don't dress poorly. I am always dressed up, even when going to the grocery store.

Why would you assume that I'm poorly dressed?

I don't dress super casual to the store. I dress up.

If you want a good experience, pick the old lady cashier.... if you want someone hot to look at, choose the young hot chick.
Chances are you won't get a good experience with a young hot chick cause she really doesn't want to be there.

As for guys.... why would you pick the line with a guy cashier?

hah, I just recently worked at Albertson's, and the training videos are SOOOO cliche! The worst part is, they actually expect you to act like that and write you up if you don't.

G.O.T.

Greet. Offer. Thank.

Hi, how are you today?
Fine, and you?
FANTASTIC! Did you find everything alright?
Yes I did, thank you.
So how are your kids {blah blah blah}
{transaction complete- courtesy clerk's turn}
I'd love to help you out to your car today, Ma'am. {do NOT ask a question, this is a statement}
No, that's ok I think I can handle it.
I don't mind at all, I have to go collect carts from the lot anyway!
Ok, if you insist {super big smile}
{help with groceries, talk small talk...}
Thank you for shopping at Albertson's! Have a GREAT DAY!

{all the while I check out their ASSets in stolen looks and/or wonder how they live with themselves and/or consider how best to get away with an extra smoke break without getting caught on the 96 cameras in and around the store}

they didn't greet you? call the fucking union.
fin.

Sometimes you can't pick who your cashier is because when the line gets too long they will open up new aisles and say "I can help the next customer".

Is it possible that you only notice minorities doing displeasing things because you're predisposed to disliking them and are looking for them to be rude?

Because, seriously. Rudeness isn't a genetic trait. I mean, I've met more rude white people than any other race, and been treated worse by white people in general, but that's just because those particular people were assholes... had nothing to do with them being white, or brown, or purple.

Bausch, it may just be that the cashier chose not to say 'hello' for reasons COMPLETELY UNRELATED TO YOU. Chill the fuck out. Who still stews over some random cashier "snubbing" them over a month later?

Yes, it's possible. I just had bad vibes from this cashier, as if they didn't like me and were being rude at me in particular for some reason. I just got very bad vibes. I'm not stewing about it, I was reminded by the incident because I was reading a topic about being discriminated against and I thought perhaps that was the issue instead of being just "snubbed".

And also, it hasn't been a month. It's been 15 days.
