AdBrite CEO is Industrial-Age Tool

From Valleywag:

Quote:
From: Iggy Fanlo To: AdBrite Subject: work hours

I hesitated sending this email for quite some time and had hoped that through your direct managers I would see some improvement. Having said that, I continue to see too few folks here at 9 AM; and too few folks here at 6 PM. I don't care if you are a morning person or a night person; if you want to work 10-8 pm or 8-6 pm, but I fully expect each one of you to put in 9-10 hours per working day. This is still a startup and we need more passion, time and energy from each of our employees than a large company would require. If we succeed, the rewards, both psychic and financial, will be great. But for that, we ask you to give more than the typical 9-5 job.

I respect each and every one of you as professionals, and I would be VERY sad if I/we ever had to keep track of working hours for our employees, but I need each of you to think about your commitment and whether it is strong enough. Again, I want to repeat; for the vast majority of you, this is just an FYI and you should be content in the knowledge that I care about you and don't want you struggling alone long into the night. Those that work hard deserve more from their peers. It's my job to make sure that we fight as a team; we are only as strong as our weakest link.

Can you believe there's anybody left in the computer industry who still thinks you can measure knowledge-worker productivity by counting nose-desk-hours?

Someone needs to forward that to the state employment board. I suspect he would get whacked for "requiring" employees to work longer hours.

RawAlex, could be, I'm not sure. The Valleywag article I link to expresses a similar suggestion, complete with a link to applicable CA law.

TidalWave, you're missing the point.

Employee dedication in the information age is not expressed, and cannot be measured, in terms of hours spent in front of a desk.

I don't see anything wrong with that email so long as the employee salaries / stock options are reflected of their income. If they work 9-5, expect a regular salary. If they're working 10-12 hours per day, I'd expect their employees making a premium in income/stock options, especially at this point that they've had success thus far.

After all, when you're making $0.02/click, you need to have your employees work extra long hours clicking on client sites.

You guys are kidding? They are being given a lot of freedom such as choosing what times they work, if he is paying a fair amount and they are a startup those hours are to be expected. New lawyers coming into a big firm are expected to be in the office 16 hours and will just be fired no warning if they dont put in the extra effort.

You think thats the ONLY reason he sent that email? No, there are obviously internal factors that resulted in his decision to send the email. Maybe deadlines are constantly missed and they are having trouble keeping up with competitors? Who knows.

I don't see anything wrong with the message, as long as he isnt pulling a Wal-Mart and making them work off the clock and if they are salary employees, doesn't matter, your ass belongs to the company then anyway. Don't like the job? Quit. Go get another one. Shut up.

Amazing to see so many on this board who are still locked into industrial-age concepts of productivity.

As much as I dislike adbrite company I admire this letter. True, the industrial age concept of productivity is significantly different than IA productivity. But I understand the point he is trying to make. He obviously has targeted that to the people who needed to hear the message.
