Canadian Webmasters!

I moved our US money yesterday at $1.00 USD = $0.925 CDN

What are you doing to survive? (those of you who live off of your adult business) Do you think its possible to negotiate a fixed USD rate with our bank, or anything like that? What are our options?

Right now, we're cutting back, lowering bills and junk but my biggest concern is our girls, so if anyone has any ideas (aside from move to the states temporarily... which I already warned everyone may have to happen) could you please share?

Thanks,
Nick

I know this is no answer, but I've been doing most of my business in Canadian dollars since beginning of the year. I scarcely do affiliate promotions though so I only get some $100 US a month as result of that.

If you transfer a certain amount from USD to CDN per month, talk to your bank about a preferred rate. I use TDExchange and get a slightly-better-than-their-ripoff-rate. It's a minimal improvement but over time, if you launder - err, transfer - enough it makes a difference.

For those of you Canadians who are thinking of moving to, or buying property, in the US it's obviously a good time to do so. Since I don't I just change it all asap - the CDN is strong vs. just about any currency so it's a good investment if the CDN dollar stays strong.

Yeah we use TD as well and I know that with our USD business accounts we get a preferred rate... we move $40,000 - $50,000 USD to CDN each month... think we can get better then the normal "I have a USD account so I can get a preferred rate" rate that we get?

Thanks

I usually budget for the cash before the exchange rate, that way any money extra I get fro the exchange rate is gravy but now that is not happening. I just have a little less cash and my kids now get less toys.

Yeah, well successful or not if you start getting 50% less money for the same amount of work... it's something to worry about.

Outsourced labor, traffic, domains and content have all gotten cheaper though.
Obviously not as fun as losing your income though.. we've gone from 48c to 93c here in aus since 03-04. Very painful. Close to -50% income.
Although it must be said 48c was unnaturally low also. Besides trying to look at opporunities to use the current strength of our money efficiently with with strategic purchases, I'm looking forward to the day when/if the trend reverses after we've become used to the more austere conditions. It'll feel like christmas the same way this feels like halloween... Or it won't matter because we'll all be dealing in euros by then.

Like bhutocracy mentioned, though profits are down, costs are also down. So that helps a lot.

while some costs are down yes, unfortunately that doesnt effect my beamer payment $1156 and insurance $378, or my cadillac $864 or it's insurance $239, or my rent $3200, or my office space $5000... thats where it stings.... normally its forunate that my USD costs are very low because of the companies I do business with, but now I'm wishing all my expenses were USD lol.... although wal-mart did lower the price of the simpsons board game from $25 to $5 so im thinking about picking that up :P

If you live outside of the US and are in this business you better find something else to do soon, open a Dunken Donuts franchise or something like that.

I kind of like the idea of the Canadian dollar being near the US value.

If I'm not mistaken $ 1.00 USD = 95 cents Canadian.

Later,

Generally I like the idea too... even dollar for dollar is good enough for me at this point... but the fact that we can't bill online in CDN dollars and 100% of my income is billed online as well as the income of all of the people I care about... that's when it becomes a problem lol

And yes someday it will START to go back up again and it will reign supreme, but January 2009 is just a starting point... it's taken it 4 years to drop from 1.58 to 0.93 and it will take at least half of that to get back up to where it was... and like I said... it's going to drop for another 14 months before it stops

Thats pretty high.. you must be right in the city.. I'd love to see your place & office ;) .. I bought my little office for $150k. Only 53sqm though.. still, it fits 10 people in ;)
No one is supposed to be visiting here so no point going overboard.. I think the mortgage is $1600/mo. I learned my lesson about going overboard with expenses a few years ago.. I'm in a smallish town and small but efficient isn't out of place so in a sense i'm lucky.

wages for 8 people though....................................

Haha, yeah my house and office is right downtown in Vancouver, which is just a whore for rent of any sort... the office is 14th floor, 3200 sq ft (wow coincidently the same as the rent at my house haha) its decent, nothing amazing, but its better then average and we have moutain views from both outter walls... the house @ 3200 a mth tho is actually a steel, should actually be going for about 4200 instead... 3 level townhouse, in the westin resort's community about 300 meters from the marina, 1800 sq ft 3bdrm, 4bath, terrace, 2 balconys etc etc etc... we really lucked out on getting it, i dont take it for granted at all which isn't like me haha Although if we werent downtown I would be doing things differently for sure... i just spent a week in tampa in sept and if I lived there, man oh man... out of town offices are huge and so cheap and very accessible... great area, tampa.... love it

When you live in one country and make your living selling things to people who live in another (most of our customers are in the US) you're at the mercy of exchange rates.

I see alot of people talking about billing in euro or CAD but that's basically just raising prices, so you have to look at it in that context and live with the good and bad that come with price increases.

Change your price structure to reflect the net loss from the exchange.
Sorry but I am not prepared to lose one nickel over this.
However I do see a few more US vacations this year.
We are also buying a ton of US currency as this wont last for more then a few years so why not profit on it.

theyre only getting old fast because some people out there take the time to toss around negativity in an attempt to boost themselves.... they even take the time to go searching for photos to attach to unnessecary messages that no one really cares to read.... which goes to show just how much time they have on their special little hands ;)
