Invisible tank ready for service by 2012

November 02, 2007 12:00am

NEW technology that can make tanks invisible has been unveiled by Britain's Ministry of Defence.

In secret trials last week, the army said it had made a vehicle completely disappear and predicted an invisible tank would be ready for service by 2012.

The new technology uses cameras and projectors to beam images of the surrounding landscape onto a tank.

The result is that anyone looking in the direction of the vehicle only sees what is beyond it and not the tank itself. A soldier who was at the trials said, "This technology is incredible.

"If I hadn't been present I wouldn't have believed it.

"I looked across the fields and just saw grass and trees - but in reality I was staring down the barrel of a tank gun."

How the technology works in combat is very sensitive, but the Defence Ministry is believed to be also testing a military jacket that works on the same principles.

It is the type of innovation normally associated with James Bond.

The brains behind the technology, Prof Sir John Pendry, said the next step was to make a tank invisible without the cameras and projectors.

Too bad nobody is aiming at tanks with their eyes... Good luck hiding from radar, laser radar, sonar, laser range finders, thermal imagers, etc.

Hmmm, and how exactly they will make the guys who put the cameras and projectors on the battle field invisible?

Actualy many tank battles are fought by seeing the enemy, tanks normaly fight using line of sight.
Radar and sonar would be usless becuase of terrain features, even in the desert. Ask any radar or sonar tech in the military, a object in contact with the ground or ocean floor is invisible.
Anything based on optics would be defeated as well since it is a optical illusion. If light is passing through or around the tank then what is the laser or optics sensor reporting back.
The only technology that has a chance would be thermal imaging, but to kill a tank you need a missil of some kind and still has to be guided and most tank batalions are going to have some kind of recon to find those threats.
And at the end of the day the only people that can develope the technology to defeat it are same people who created it or have partnerships with. And take a wild guess who that is if England is the developer.
This is all at the best of my knowledge.

I think having the tank invisible will improve bathrooms no end... It will be nice to just see the bowl and seat part, without the tank containing the flushing mechanism obvious...

they already are doing it. i live out by a test area and have seen them morph and straight freaking vanish into the blue sky. pretty darn amazing. they also have the air ship out here that will move an entire squadron. some pretty darn impressive stuff to see for sure.

This is a lot like stealth technology in a sense. It relies on very complicated technology and is fragile as fuck. I want tos ee that stuff work as promised after spending 5 weeks in a desert or a prolonged stay on a battlefield.

I'm too lazy to put together a legitimate reply... but my former life was DoD R&D specifically helicopter and tank optical systems including laser radar, rangefinders, FLIRs, active obstacle avoidance systems, etc.

I know you will probably call bullshit on this, but its true. Its also true that I'm too lazy for this right now. And its also true that I'm a dumb ass for even posting this crap, and further true that I'm too lazy to have typed this much and must now go eat something and chill out.

Many years ago I got pulled onto a job to do a move for a major defense firm. I got to talking to an R&D guy and he told me back then that RoboCop had nothing on what they were putting together. That was in the early 90's.

Cool... but for some reason I think they might just have more... what is it... we are behind the military by what is it 15 - 20 years... look at what the NSA grabs and researches...

To those bitching about it not being invisable to other advanced forms of technology, have you not all been paying attention lately.

Big army moves in and destroys little country in 2 days cause they took smoke breaks and wanted to shoot more stuff, otherwise under 24 hours. Then little fuckers start throwing shit are your shit, riding their bicycle up to your ass and blowing up, or they set traps along side of the road and wait to visually see you and then call the bombs to explode. This shit is not for fighting other modern enemies in my opinion. It is to fight insurgents and assorted freedom fighters.

In other words, copying the exact weather/sky/cloud formations right onto screens which cover for example...the bottom of an aircraft.

So not only can you not see it on radar, but can't see it with the naked eye...

hmmmmmm, i bet we already got that technology....prolly what eventually turned into flat screen tv's & lcd displays....
thats indeed was a great idea. But aircrafts are too high and fast in the sky that its hard to see with naked eye already. That soldier suit was a good idea
