I am not a full veggie but I eat vegetarian about 90 percent of the time these days and yes, I do feel better. However, that is mostly due to the low levels of saturated fats I eat. You have to make sure to get your proteins or of course you are going to feel 'limp' as mentioned above but it really isn't that hard with all the beans and the like that are out there to eat.

I've done both vegan and vegetarian... currently eating more meat than in the past, but still about a 50% veggie diet...
There are some def. health gains from it... Increase in energy level for sure

Newer vegetarians have it better and at least are more healthy than their earlier ancestors who often looked like zombies that often also smelled funny. Sort of how the raw diet people look now (Raw diet is so fucking stupid). Reality for most is if you eat a good balanced diet that is low or removes the two bad fats (I prefer lower), stick with proper portion sizes, stay off refined or super refined sugars (high fructose, and often even white sugar), eat enough whole grains and vegetables. You will feel fantastic, have a high energy level, be overall very healthy, correct your blood pressure issues and cholesterol nearly in a week or less, and be very mentally alert. Lastly I have really been trying this out and stressing it on some others. Eat locally and seasonally whenever possible. I now am down to a 4 hour radius from my house, with the one exception being fed exd sea food deliveries. Though canning and preserving have become a side passion of mine now since you may want tomato's in the winter or some cherry jam come fall.

yeah, I didn't set out to eat mostly vegetarian but since I am on my weight loss 'journey' and I can only have a low amount of fat grams a day I just found it easier to cook a lot more vegetarian meals. Plus, I just like veggies and there are so many to explore. This month seems to be all about different types of squashes for me. At the moment I have my lunch cooking in the oven..1/4 butternut squash, 1/4 harlequin squash and will put tiny bit of low fat marg on them and then steamed carrots and some mushrooms on the side. Nearly no fat but I will be so stuffed I won't be able to move.
I have insulin resistance issues and ever since finding that out I have been all about whole grains and 'whole foods' and I think it is that which is helping me feel better rather than just because I went mostly veggie. On the local food thing, that is pretty much the big foodie issue in the UK 'food miles' as they call it here. It is harder to do when you live in London but even supermarkets are now launching ranges of milk where it comes from within such and such miles of the store..so local milk. |

Eek Sarah, margarine? Even low fat. Its almost always transfat and nearly every dietician will tell you to not skimp fat on butter and sub in margarine, aside from occassionally the whipped style yet even then whipped butter is again better. Yes both have bad fats but transfat is worse and butter tastes well like butter. Just use in moderation.

I use about 1 tablespoon of it a week. If that is the only bad thing in my diet these days I will allow it. Mine is suppose to be trans fat free and since I am on about 20 grams of fat a day I will take it. Plus, I am lactose intolerant so I go low in dairy anyway.

yeah..when I need a bit I use that because of the small amounts needed. Instead of sour cream, etc I use a bit of 0% Greek yogurt.

I'm not a true vegetarian / i eat seafood on occasion. One thing I can reccomend is if you're going to make the switch, go light on the fake meats. Alot of it is just straight gluten. I think I'm healthier since I cut alot of that out of my diet.

I still need my meat, but I usually do 2 full vegetarian meals per week. I've found ways to dress the veggies up so they're still healthy, yet my son, who's a picky eater will still eat them. It really is about balance though. People who go from one extreme to another seem to have more problems adjusting. I'll maybe take that slice of cake after dinner, but it will usually be because I ate a bunch of fruit for lunch or ate something lower in fat earlier in the day. I found as long as I don't totally deprive myself, but rather control my portions and maintain that balance, I've felt better, healthier, more alert and just overall better. It's the best I've felt in years.

I was one for 2 years. There wasn't any difference in my mental state as far as I could tell. I did become more lean as far as my physical health.

I'm going on 20 years now of being vegetarian. I've tried spurts of being vegan - i come and go with that.
I can't see ever returning to eating meat. Being vegetarian is so much a part of my daily life now that i don't even think twice about it unless someone brings it up. As weird as it may sound to some people - I don't even look at meat as food at this point. At the same time i could care less what people eat. Thats not my business nor do i want it to be.

I eat mostly a vegetarian diet with about 3 serves of meat per week. I don't like how animals are mistreated to bring us meat but at the same time I believe humans need a balanced diet. The worst thing about food is when people lecture others about what *they* do and how its the best way ... food is different for everyone, its chemistry & your body has its own chemistry so what works for someone else may make you really sick. The person above who said the raw diet is stupid ... LOL yeah ok mr put stuff in jars but tell others to eat seasonally ![]() Calling diets that work for others stupid isn't really productive ... some of us have enough trouble as it is. |
