Google's success

http://www.google.com/
http://www.yahoo.com/

Ever notice how incredibly clean google's main page is compared to yahoo's? Google is the 2nd search engine next to Yahoo, correct? The Hun's been saying it forever, and I have finally followed suit with my sites, treat your visitors with respect and you will succeed. You have to be in it for the long run. Yahoo even has popups now... you can tell that google is going to reign supreme.

they concentrate on one thing and on one thing only

look at ebay vs. amazon or yahoo

ebay does auctions and auctions only

so many online success stories are people who have a site that services one market

Google is to the point and does searches and just searches, no stock quotes and free email and shit like that

Even in the travel world Orbitz is profitable vs. Priceline is not (maybe a bit)

Remember the days when priceline wanted to do everything? Groceries, Long Distance, Gas, Cars

Just my

You really can't compare the two. Google is a search engine, and that is all. Yahoo is one of the best portals on the internet. You only have to take a look at a few sections to see how broad yahoo really is; news, shopping, the vast amount of business information available, amoungst other things.

Google, the best search engine on the net. No doubt about that.
Yahoo, for me, the best portal on the internet.

There's a reason they're both in the top 5 traffic rankings @ Alexa (yahoo is #1, and google is #5). They're both excellent at what they do.

This is the bottom line...

Where do people go when they want to find stuff?

It used to be Yahoo... It's now Google... Time will make Google the winner, but then google will probably start fucking us all about... I remember the good old days of yahoo, now look at the mess it has become!

What was that site I saw at the top of the results the other day?

www.!!!!###111222333sex-anal-fuck-ass-girls.com

wtf!?!

True, very good point that I never even considered. From that point of view, Google is the #1 search engine. But generally they are both cosidered to be the top 2 SEs, and Google is going to take over very soon.

You are being left being in the stupid world, it comes down to CASH making money not who has the biggest site or links etc.

Here are the facts:

Yahoo:

For the six months ended 06/02, revenues rose 15% to $418.5 million. Net income before accounting change totaled $31.9 million vs. a net loss of $60 million

Ebay:

For the six months ended 6/30/02, revenues increased 53% to $511.4 million. Net income totaled $101.9 million, up from $45.7 million. Results reflect increased online auction transaction activity and improved operating margins.

Yahoo lost 60 million ebay made $101 million PROFIT

Does it still matter who has more pages, noone cares anymore its the bottom line that matters.

And the stock prices reflect the above as well Yahoo is a $10 stock while ebay is at $59 a share

Not that stock prices mean anything but trust me in these days it does.

Sorry, I think you are right. But you have to click on "Web Pages" after you search to get to the same results and not many people do that. I get way more hits from my #1 Google spot from Google than I do from my #1 spot in Yahoo under "Web Pages". I actually never noticed I got any hits from that Yahoo listing.

I read somewhere that they were gonna start using someone else though...

Altavista use to be my favorite... but now I only use Google... I don't use Yahoo much now either.

altavista is the big loser I guess.
they used to have VERY good and clean results 1 and 2 years back and I used to get very good traffic from them.

yahoo is still a great portal while google is the #1 search engine

Yahoo uses google, I think. But they are both search engines / link directories as far as the surfer is concerned.

As cheekycherry already said, the bottom line is where do people go when they want to find stuff? Google is the place. It makes finding stuff EASY.

Have you checked out the google bar?

http://toolbar.google.com/

If you do not have it, GET IT and you will love it. It makes searching so easy. It even has a few tools that help us webmasters like automatic Page Rank ratings.

Search engines suck.

I still remember my very first time on line. The first thing we did was search for my brother's website, which was for his business. We typed in "Dynasty Screen Printing" and received over 300,000 results. Are there really 300,000 companies with the same name? No, of course not. The search picked up everything with the name Dynasty, everything with the word Screen, and everything with the word Printing.

These pages have to be listed by hand.

Last night I searched for Discovery Credit Cards. It was impossible to find.

Yahoo, losing money
Ebay, making money
Amazon, losing money

Look at their financials sometime.

Oh, and Google, making money

Over the past year or two google has been expanding their reach into areas other than just search:
http://www.google.com/options/

It's simply a matter of time before they go public, need to increase revenue by x% every quarter to meet investor expectations, and over extend themselves into other areas.

They're the best now but I wouldn't be surprised if someone came along and knocked them off the top.

Google is a good company, Google is Not Evil, and Google does not have to bend its ear to public shareholder vote.

But, monopolism (even de facto monopolism) will ravage anyone.
Despite the fact that they are concentrating on essentially one thing, they've had relatively little innovation in the past few years.

The fact that they haven't sold out is very important to the web using world, but they shouldn't be crowned superheroes just for NOT doing something self-destructive, even if all the other lame fucks did. For people whose sole interest is information retrieval... their breakthroughs are crawling.

why i completely stopped using Yahoo! for anything:

X-10

their ads were not only fucking pop-unders/pop-ups, but they were offensive in general, implying that i could buy their product to spy on people.

now that i use Mozilla for almost everything, i'm not affected by this, so if Google starts using pop-unders let me know and i'll switch away from them, too.

I like yahoo more.
Yahoo has daily news articles, I visit their movie section often enough, and sometimes play yahoo games.
Yahoo makes a nice start page.

I hardly ever search for things. Google is great for searching but once you've been online for awhile you start to know where things are.

Um....The first time you were online you obviously did not use Google, since it requires a match of ALL words by default.

Yes, using the right terms may help.

But this is a good point... eventually SE's will be good enough to understand that he meant to type Discover as opposed to Discovery. Google's plans are to get the surfer what he wants as fast as possible - which most SE's do not want to do. If they follow this, eventually AI techniques will come into play with shit like this... it will be cool...

Yahoo is positioning itself to be "THE" web portal. The profit will come when the world wide web graduates from infant to toddler and beyond.

yes, google is the best, hands down
google however is going to be going public soon...thats not neccesarly a bad thing, but it may just lead to some minor(or major) changes in the near future. When you got shareholders to please, your prespective may just change. Lets hope that doesnt happen with google.

the new google soap api is very innovative in my opinion. If they play that right they'll be able to sell google services to developers and you'll start to see 'powered by google' icons on new web apps.
