Ever notice how incredibly clean google's main page is compared to yahoo's? Google is the 2nd search engine next to Yahoo, correct? The Hun's been saying it forever, and I have finally followed suit with my sites, treat your visitors with respect and you will succeed. You have to be in it for the long run. Yahoo even has popups now... you can tell that google is going to reign supreme.

You really can't compare the two. Google is a search engine, and that is all. Yahoo is one of the best portals on the internet. You only have to take a look at a few sections to see how broad yahoo really is; news, shopping, the vast amount of business information available, amoungst other things.

Google, the best search engine on the net. No doubt about that.
Yahoo, for me, the best portal on the internet.

There's a reason they're both in the top 5 traffic rankings @ Alexa (yahoo is #1, and google is #5). They're both excellent at what they do.

True, very good point that I never even considered. From that point of view, Google is the #1 search engine. But generally they are both cosidered to be the top 2 SEs, and Google is going to take over very soon.

You are being left being in the stupid world, it comes down to CASH making money not who has the biggest site or links etc.

Here are the facts:

Yahoo:

For the six months ended 06/02, revenues rose 15% to $418.5 million. Net income before accounting change totaled $31.9 million vs. a net loss of $60 million

Ebay:

For the six months ended 6/30/02, revenues increased 53% to $511.4 million. Net income totaled $101.9 million, up from $45.7 million. Results reflect increased online auction transaction activity and improved operating margins.

Yahoo lost 60 million ebay made $101 million PROFIT

Does it still matter who has more pages, noone cares anymore its the bottom line that matters.

And the stock prices reflect the above as well Yahoo is a $10 stock while ebay is at $59 a share

Not that stock prices mean anything but trust me in these days it does.

Sorry, I think you are right. But you have to click on "Web Pages" after you search to get to the same results and not many people do that. I get way more hits from my #1 Google spot from Google than I do from my #1 spot in Yahoo under "Web Pages". I actually never noticed I got any hits from that Yahoo listing.

altavista is the big loser I guess.
they used to have VERY good and clean results 1 and 2 years back and I used to get very good traffic from them.

I still remember my very first time on line. The first thing we did was search for my brother's website, which was for his business. We typed in "Dynasty Screen Printing" and received over 300,000 results. Are there really 300,000 companies with the same name? No, of course not. The search picked up everything with the name Dynasty, everything with the word Screen, and everything with the word Printing.

These pages have to be listed by hand.

Last night I searched for Discovery Credit Cards. It was impossible to find.

But, monopolism (even de facto monopolism) will ravage anyone.

their ads were not only fucking pop-unders/pop-ups, but they were offensive in general, implying that i could buy their product to spy on people.

now that i use Mozilla for almost everything, i'm not affected by this, so if Google starts using pop-unders let me know and i'll switch away from them, too.

Yahoo has daily news articles, I visit their movie section often enough, and sometimes play yahoo games.
Yahoo makes a nice start page.

I hardly ever search for things. Google is great for searching but once you've been online for awhile you start to know where things are.

Yes, using the right terms may help.

But this is a good point... eventually SE's will be good enough to understand that he meant to type Discover as opposed to Discovery. Google's plans are to get the surfer what he wants as fast as possible - which most SE's do not want to do. If they follow this, eventually AI techniques will come into play with shit like this... it will be cool...

Microsoft is losing money on every Xbox they sell. Hardware is low margin, BUT, they know they'll make that back and then some when they start selling the high margin games for the Xbox, since they have the inside track on programming the best games.
The same way they have the inside track on programming the best office suite (high margin) to work with windows (lower margin)

Yahoo is positioning itself to be "THE" web portal. The profit will come when the world wide web graduates from infant to toddler and beyond.
