Eric...Cory can finally use that BDay gift you got him

http://www.bizjournals.com/baltimore...7/daily24.html

Southwest Airlines, the dominant carrier at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, is changing the way it boards planes.

The airline's "cattle-call" boarding procedure -- in which the first passengers in line got first choice of seats, with some people getting in line more than an hour or two before takeoff -- is being replaced by a modified open seating plan. Passengers will be assigned a letter (A, B, or C) and a number on their boarding pass when they check in, and they'll board when their letter is called. They'll also line up in the airport boarding area by number from first (1) to last (60).

Officials at Dallas-based Southwest (NYSE: LUV) said they tested the system in San Diego and San Antonio before introducing it nationwide. They added that the passengers wanted some sort of open seating system during testing. The new boarding system will be in place by early November at every airport served by Southwest.

Southwest is the dominant carrier at BWI, controlling 52 percent of the fast-growing airport's market share.

So now he will be pushed and shoved by the fat lady that has a A1 on her ticket and he has an A2. This is going to be even better. I hope he is forever stuck between the largest people on the plane and that his crocs get caught in the escalator on the way up to the boarding area!

Eric,

They don't let any hot girls fly. They have a strict policy against it. Options are thin.

Cory will now have to pick up his dry cleaning an hour before his flight leaves instead of 5 minutes.

Are you saying that you are a hot girl? I mean you do make a good woman, but a hot one? You might be pushing it there. We will have to see how much I have to drink this weekend before I will call you hot!

So, they expect people to line up in order of A1, A2, A3, etc?

Good luck on that.

Phil and I will be there at 4pm.

You will have some catching up to do. By my calculations, you will be a minimum of 3 sea-breezes short upon arrival.

Right now what they do is let everyone go in total chaos. My last flight, some woman stuck her two kids by me so that her and her husband could relax. Funny, I actually heard her say that.

Because of this, all the strippers had to bypass my row.

This is a major flaw and need be fixed.

Now if only they increase the baggage limit from 30 to 170 pounds they'll be Cory's favorite airline. That and provide a "Diva Pass" which allows you to hang your $100 t-shirts along with the Captain's blazer.

I fly SWA every month it seems. While I would prefer assigned seating, the A, B, C tickets seem to be okay (as long as I remember to check-in online early enough).

People have a hard enough time figuring out which line in theirs, I just can't see the cooperation of them actually lining up in numerical order.

Oh you fine sir have not yet had the privilage of having the Southwest conversation with Cory.

Cory feels that he should not have to check in early and that he should be assigned a seat. My answer - Fly a different airline

Cory feels that he should get special treatment for his baggage and that his garment bag should be hung up with the rest of the hanging luggage. i.e. the Captains Blazer.

Cory feels that since he did not check in early online and print his boarding pass ahead of time that he should still be able to get a window or aisle seat and that he does not understand why he is stuck in the middle seat of the back row which does not recline.

Cory also does not feel that he should fly another airline, but that Southwest should accomodate all of his personal needs, no matter what their business goals may be.

Once you have this conversation with Cory you will understand completely.

You left one out: SWA pilots talk too much. I don't care that we are flying over a ball of yarn, I want to listen to my headphones!

Not sure where you fly to, maybe it is just because I end up on these 6 AM flights and no one is very talkative.

As long as the flight attendants keep giving me my 2nd and 3rd drinks for free I have no complaints.

Eric,

You've done a fine job of summarizing the Cory/Southwest experience but please allow me to add a few.

Cory feels that a bag filled with shoes the size of a coffin is suitable for a 3 day trip. Additionally, the SkyCap should be happy to unload this 173 pound bag out of the back of his pickup for the two dollar tip he's waving around (we all know he bribed some poor neighbor to load it for him in the first place).

Cory feels that when he not only refuses to check in early by printing his boarding pass but also refuses to line up early, lest some lowly southwestie ask him where he bought those "killer jellies", that when the overhead space is full they should clear out an entire row for him to stow his three backpacks full of camera, ipod, iphone, ifaggotry gear.

Cory also feels that the forty-five minute flight to Vegas simply is not long enough for him to enjoy his shirley temple and that the captain should circle a few times before landing.

Oh...I almost forgot. Cory also feels that the person nearest to him, whether young or old, should be used as a floatation device, not his seat back cushion. But that applies to every day life, not just Southwest.

Cory also likes to talk down to the flight attendants and berate the airline he chose to fly, then somehow invites the person "lucky enough" to fly with him into his tirade to agree with him. Thus putting said person on the spot in front of the crew and other passengers and being labeled as 'that guy' by association.

Eric, John, you guys forgot all of Cory's luggage is fragile and full of electronic equipment that the crew cannot afford to replace and therefor cannot be manhandled or even checked in.

Nah, I am bitchy, but I don't talk down to them. My very good friend is a pilot for SWA, so I wouldn't ever do that.

I just get frustrated that they let all the oversized luggage on first, then when I get on, I can't store my camera backpack. I just think they need to check everyone initially. I don't like to put my camera with cargo, I am sure JFK understands that! Unless he has a hard case.....I don't.

Anyone remember the silly games SWA flight attendants used to do? I remember getting hit in the head with a toilet paper roll and everyone booing me. I guess it was a game to keep the roll going.

So stupid....

I doubt JFK ever has this problem because he simply goes to Southwest.com and checks in 24 hours before his flight time and gets an A so he can pick where ever he wishes to place his bag.

Morning bump for Southwest and Cory's Crocs...

Btw, grab this book if you can. It's a quick read and a pretty interesting look at how Southwest got started...

I always found that Southwest had the most organized system.
