What separates the average webmaster from the top earners

What separates the above average webmaster who makes six figures from being the next nastydollars or topbucks. Is it lack of motivation, money, pure laziness?

Personally i think a lot of it has to do with motivation, some guys are just not motivated to want to make more money. They are at ease with what they are doing. Shap the owner of twistys.com is a good example of a guy who started off small and has really come into his own. Also the same can be said for Pimpdogg wether you like him or not.

Also some guys seem to spend way too much time involved in board drama to actually ever get any work done as well, to reach that next level.

There's business and novelty... You have to avoid the novelty and you'll make money! Otherwise you'll be a drugged out, sex-aholic, drunk, drama queen with empty pockets, boo-hooing on GFY. :-/

It is the "it" factor in business. You know it when you see it or hear it. The ability to separate emotional and stategic thinking. You have to want it bad enough and not be afraid to fail. Stories of people who had nothing that made something are very motivational. You will here common themes. Only 20% of what you do causes 80% of your success. Do what you do best and deligate the rest.

Motivation is the most important factor. A clueless webmaster working 12 hours a day is going to make more than the genius who can't stay seated at his desk.

I think perhaps it's the ability to take an idea and follow it through to successful completion, and keep pushing it, as opposed to only taking it halfway, or never even starting to begin with.

I think even more important is having the business sense to identify which ideas can be accomplished given that person's available resources and capital. Often times people work so hard at these impossible goals and never really accomplish anything.

That's why I think motivation will only take you so far and people who rely solely on their 'motivation' are not much different than people who dig ditches. There will always be ditches that need digging, but at the end of the day, all you did was dig a ditch.

If you have a good enough idea, other people will do the work for you. That's where skills and brains come in. People who have neither overlook that and rely solely on motivation, which can only take them so far.

Hanging out with a different group of people isn't going to change the fact that 95% of the people in this biz aren't making 6 figures.

Focus is a big missing item.

Newbies put in only a minimal effort, and then get discouraged when they fail.

You need to go out on a limb, quit your job, mortgage your house, and give it 100% of your time and energy. If that is too risky/ scary.. then go back to Mom's basement, flipping burgers, and/ or working for The Man.

also a good part of that 95% you're talking about aren't really in this biz. just because someone has a nick on GFY and gets drunk at a show doesn't mean they're in this industry and therefore shouldn't be counted in my opinion.

of the serious webmasters who i would consider 'in this industry', most make well over 6 figures.

5% of the total is what I would consider a few.

Also my point is that only the top 5% or so are making 6 figures or better, so that's definitely not "the average webmaster", since the definition of average would put them in the 50th percentile and not the 95th percentile.

So basically what you're saying is that if you don't make over 6 figures in this biz then you're not really in this biz.

I guess a restaurant owner really isn't in the restaurant biz until he sells more hamburgers than McDonalds.

my point is that this industry is smaller than a lot of people think. i find it funny when people come to me for advertising saying that they have 20k webmasters a day looking at their site.

also, it's definitely not a money thing that puts someone in an industry. all i'm saying is that a good amount of people in this industry make over 6 figures a year. easily over 5% i would say.

Dude, what ru smokin' pot, crack or pole...lol

Your post is NOT true...your post depends on what that clueless webmaster is actually doing for those 12 hours (maybe if he's shackled to the PC desk with a shit and piss bucket available...but somehow i don't think that'll help 'em make more money...do you?)

A clueless webmaster working 12 hours a day is prolly also jerkin' his sex-hungry cock thru most of the downloadable content (if they aren't spending time downloading it for later "personal use").

Ya may want to re-think that post...LOL

Nice debate going over the six figures. Making six figures isn't that hard in this biz, requires you to work more and post less.

I think a lot of guys make six figures plus in this biz, they just don't have time to be posting on gfy. Wanted to see what people think separates the guy who makes 150k a year from the guy that makes 1mill+ a year.

2 things...luck and knowing the right people.

luck as in being in the right place at the right time, and then if you're there, knowing who to make that 1 mill+ with.

lol, you're exactly right. The people who think the above is TRUE are the ones who are destined to NOT succeed. It's easier to believe what you wrote than to actually understand the sponsor side of the equation.

Who says an "average webmaster" can't be a "top earner"?? "Top earning" is down to how much profit is stuffed in your pocket - nothing else.

Any "average webmaster" who wastes time on boards is going to achieve little. Boards used to be of value, but that has changed and it's like a 45 year old trying to have an intelligent conversation about Britney Spears with an 18 year old after sex is over.

There are far more "top earners" who never visit/post on boards - and a fair number of em are substantial corps (including a few quoted on markets). There is little difference being online or in real world - if ya can't manage a real world business - fat chance of being any different online.

Earning is not a mystery - just a matter of sustained motivation, organization, applying knowledge/expertise and using all "tools" to maximize time. A net biz is the same as all others - nothing stays the same, and it's not a sprint, but a marathon.

It appears common to have "confusion" over the product in this biz - it's not about trying to fuck anything that moves and has a sign of life. The idea is to sell that product to horny surfers - not consume it.

Enough bullshit - back to work.
