”Alabanza and Jupiter fit neatly into our managed hosting offerings and were acquired at less than four times expected synergistic EBITDA,” said Arthur Becker, Chief Executive Officer of NaviSite. “These transactions add new customers with average revenue per square foot densities of approximately $4,700 per year and create significant opportunities to up-sell and cross-sell our entire suite of managed services.”

Damn, only $4700 per square foot? lol lol

Seriously, I won't hire someone who is currently employed by a competitor....but if he (or others) are not making the move to the new ownership then I would be interested in speaking with them. We are always hiring the right people.

It was great to have you along on the tour!

I just thought it was interesting that they were measuring revenue per square foot, I never thought of that metric. I guess we're quite a bit more dense, my figures per square foot are nearly double.

Brad
Just get a taller building... sounds like the perfect hosting rental race would be about 2 feet by 2 feet by about 200 feet tall. That would really bring the revenue per square foot up.

Brad

Hey Brad....

Revenue per square foot is a common metric among people who operate their own Data Center and it includes more than just the rack. It includes all of the space for HVAC, Generators, Battery Rooms, Fire Suppression Equipment, Routing Infrastructure, Meet Me Facilities, etc. Basically everything except the Administrative Offices is included in the number.

For hosting companies like yours, that co-locate into another company's data center, the metric is considered ARPU (Average Revenue Per Unit).

Of course, just between you and I, oftentimes I am jealous of you not having to deal with operating an IDC. You just write a check and expect things to work while you are busy taking care of your customers while I have to sit in meetings all day and learn things like the difference between 480 and 240 and Amps and Watts and why when the UPS says 900 on the side of it, you really are only suppose to let it go to about 700 before you have to buy another one. I would rather watch nails rust. ;)

(edit: SweetT beat me to it, had to put the kiddo to bed before I could reply. doh!)

Brad,

Are your numbers including "overhead" space for things like CRAC units, generator bays, battery rooms, etc? If not, that's why their numbers are likely low since afaik they owned/leased their own datacenter building. But, who knows which numbers are actually used in a press release, and if they are even close to accurate

By my math for a recent build we did, which does include some space for CRAC units and 3-phase PDU's, is roughly 26 sqft per rack. This is for a large "suite" (e.g. cage) inside an already functioning facility. When you include battery room and genset square footage, my 26 sqft per rack figure would go way up.

Otherwise, if they are using raw "this many racks fit in this many square feet" then yeah, it's a bit lower than my numbers as well. So low in fact, that I'm pretty sure the overhead space is included.

Nice "seeing" you at the show - quite literally, for about 5 seconds

-Phil

This could really end up sucking for all those people who just signed two year deals with Jupiter during their last promo. (if the support/service/network ends up deteriorating)

This explains why they were making such an aggressive offer to get people to sign long term deals.
More people under contract means more $$ when you put the company on the block.
