MAC vs PC

I am thinking to move to MAC ...

but ... I need your help guys

I need good software instead of following for windows :
- ACDsee with multi-folder image processing - resizing, cropping, sharpening ...
- Arles
- any FLV encoder - encoder from WMV to FLV ...
- Total Commander
- FTP Voyager

Do you have any good suggestions ?

or maybe I am wrong and I shouldn't move to MAC ? I heard that i.e. MAC is better for graphic ... Adobe products works better on MAC than on PC ... what you think ??? some of you have enough experience to tell me if moving to MAC is good idea ... or maybe I should stick to Vista ?

Please let me know ...

Considering you can run Windows on a Mac for those few programs you can't do without, I don't see why anyone DOESN'T switch.

I bought a Mac as well and after some searching the interwebs i have found all tools i need that runs under OSX.

If you really want to use Windows based software you can buy software called Parallels desktop for Mac.
It enables you to install XP/Vista on your mac and run Windows software.
It also has a "coherence" mode that enables you to even run Windows software in your OSX desktop!.. it rocks.. www.parallels.com and look at the demo movies they have
I love my Mac and did not miss my PC one single day ;)

I consider switching to Mac a "personal (self) upgrade"

but I heard that there is hard drive problem ...

i.e. MAC can use some files ... and windows cant edit them ... I mean if you save them under MAC ... windows cant open them ... you need to COPY them using paralell ...

or maybe you found solution for that ... and I am wrong ?

I just dont want to make my life harder because of that ...

lets say that you have a website ... some pictures you processed in ACDsee ... design in Adobe under MAC ... so ... both of them can be place in the same folder ? both systems see the directory tree same way ?

what If I will need to open these images done under Windows ... in Adobe under Mac ? I will be able to edit them and save them ??? or "save as ..." only ... I wont be able to replace them ...

As I said ... I heard that there is Hard Drive conflict between these 2 systems ... and you have to copy from one to second through paralel to use them in Mac or Windows ... which makes life harder a bit not easier

or am I wrong ???

Yeah ... but as I said ... there is probably hard drive conflict between MAC and Windows ... it means that ... every time you use ACDsee or Arles work on content ... you will have to copy it to "MAC" through paralell ...

thats why I asked if maybe ... someone ... who is using MAC and MAC only ... knows other programs under MAC instead of :
- ACDsee with multi-folder image processing - resizing, cropping, sharpening ...
- Arles
- any FLV encoder - encoder from WMV to FLV ...

I already found replacements for TotalComander and FTP Voyager ... but ... these 3 are the most important ...

I have an external HDD that I use to shuffle files from Mac, to Windows, to Ubuntu.

I've never had any issues with opening files of any type on any of these systems.

What can you do with Photoshop on a Mac that you can't do on a PC ... seems like a lot of unecessary issues to deal with. Been working in Photoshop for many, many years on a PC and have never had the problems I've had working on it with a Mac.

For crying out loud, do they have a right-click yet? ;)

Macs are like the Wii of the computer world. Fun and cool when you first get them but they'll eventually end up gathering dust while you use a far superior Microsoft product.

Now, if you're seriously anti-Microsoft then I would check out Ubuntu. I never thought I could honestly say that I am in love with an OS but I think I love Ubuntu. If it's not love it's definitely lust.

Ubuntu, the current linux hype distro. It changes every couple of years, and has ever since like 1992 back when Slackware 92 was the hot distro.

its linux, the distro doesn't really mean shit.

I second that! I receive and send out tons of files, I can open anything that comes from Windows and nobody had issues opening the files that I sent.

What problems have you encountered using photoshop on a mac? And yes for the right-click.

Bottom line, I vote for mac... twice!!

Ubuntu is far more "polished" than any other distro out there especially if you use it as a desktop. On a server I would agree with your "linux is linux" statement.

Funny you say Ubuntu.

I just converted a desktop machine to Kubuntu and love it. I even reformatted my dual-boot laptop to solely use Kubuntu, and though it's a bit slower to boot (than CentOS or windows), I love it. I need a program, I just open up adept, do a quick search and there's a free one available. I think I'm finally sold as a linux user after a half year playing with a flavor or two. Then again, I'd label myself as a "developer", so most of my tools are pretty much an IDE, apache, database and some language packs, etc. -- all free.

I switched to a Mac over 4 years ago and I've never been happier. I personally haven't found the need to use a program that ONLY ran on Windows and there wasn't a Mac version. That being said I believe you can do anything you want on either machine. Take care of either one and it will last you a long time.

As for the hard drive issue on a Mac while running Windows... Yes the files are not usable for each and that's simply because the hard drive is partitioned. So you essentially have a Mac AND a PC on the same computer. As was said in an earlier post, an external hard drive might take care of that issue for files.

If you like Windows and feel comfortable with it then stay with it. I don't think Mac's are inherently "better" with graphics than windows... at least not anymore. I do love the imaging software for Macs but I'm not a rabid Mac person that I have to get everyone else to switch over. It would be great for my stocks but the iPod and iPhone are doing a great job so far... lol

Yes they do, you just have to buy a two-button mouse. Or you can use the control key.
It's a lot like the short keys in Photoshop.

Not only do I use it, I just setup new boxes for some friends who are first time computer owners. They don't know Windows and seem to be able to get buy just fine with Ubuntu just fine.

I'm a big Mac fan, but like you said...I'm in love with Ubuntu. Few boxes and 1 laptop here at home running it right now. I'm not a power user. I have had fun learning the ins and outs.

Anyone who bashes OSX/MAC and glorifies Windows/M$ seriously doesn't have a clue what they're talking about. It's obvious, they're extremely closed minded and know nothing of the Macintosh OSX operating system.

It makes me sad people can literally be that stupid.

I'm a big Mac fan, but like you said...I'm in love with Ubuntu. Few boxes and 1 laptop here at home running it right now. I'm not a power user. I have had fun learning the ins and outs.
I have to try Ubuntu on a desktop.I tired on my laptop and it was a nightmare trying to get the screen resolution I wanted so I gave up.

OK, understand that I've been using DOS based machines since the early 80's, I'm an idiot/slow learner, and I don't like changes.

That said, I bought a Macbook Pro a few months ago. I think my biggest mistake was keeping the old laptop hooked up so when I started doing something on the Mac and got frustrated, I'd just turn around and do it on the WIN98 machine.

BUT, after 5 weeks (again, I'm an idiot so this didn't sink in until after the 30 days had gone by where I could send it back), I still was frustrated and ended up selling it on Ebay for an $800 loss.

Get the Mac and spend every second you can for 20 days working on it - if you don't like it, send it back. I think you only pay shipping charges. At least that's all I paid when I sent the Vaio with Vista on it back too ;)

There's all sorts of "Fanboys".

I've yet to see a windows "fanboy", or a linux "fanboy" (unless you're on slashdot). However, Mac fanboys and fangirls are like a cult. Like munki put it, 'puters and their OS' are just tools. However, Mac people don't seem to understand that -- it's a "culture" for them. Maddox explains the whole Apple fanboy culture perfectly.

I have nothing against Apple (other than their shitty ipod screen scratching when a leaf falls on it, or a shitty iTunes interface [as that's the only apple thing i own]).

eh... fuck it... i'd rant on and on, but I'm lazy. Use what you want.

Actually that should just read one Mac, since they run both, and you wouldn't need a PC.

Bullshit. Sounds like someone has been eating out of Apple's hand.

Please let me know ...
Well.. DON'T move to mac because of anything you've heard about graphics. There is literally no difference between the two platforms.. PhotoShop on mac is no different to PhotoShop on PC. In the 80's it was different.. but hey.. that was two decades ago. You didn't use macs for 3d work back then either... these days it doesn't really matter.
Probably the best reason to move is if you like the mac only products like Final Cut Pro. The person using the machine is 100 times more important than the machine itself. Despite what anyone says it just comes down to a personal preference. Use a mac for a day or two and see how you like it while doing your daily tasks.

Don't buy a MAC. They are only for people who are willing to spend a little more $ on hardware so they can avoid downtime, viruses, trojans, cleaning a tuning and get more work done. It is a competitive advantage to use a MAC so don't buy one.
