Do reputations really matter in this industry?

I was thinking about this in light of all the accusations going on lately.Does it really matter? Based on things I have seen in the two past years of people truly fucking over the whole industry or working for companies that fuck over the industry still being warmly embraced. I think it doesn't make a difference as long as someone makes money with that person or company.
What are your thoughts?

It happens in every industry, in friendships, in marriages, in family relationships.....many people let certain "errors" slide and/or be forgiven. It's what makes us human ;)

Regardless of the fact whether it matters or how much it matters, it certainly does not help to be publicly labeled a scammer by someone else, especially someone who is considered an important entity in the industry.

I agree with you(omg its the end of the world lol) I think money is a motivator on the business side.I watched a show, Coke sold coke under a different name in Nazi germany during WW2 so they didnt lose the business.

Positive reputations are huge in this industry. They speak volumes.

Negative reputations are easily forgotten until someone digs them up some time later... and then forgotten again.

Money makes the world go round!!!! Reputation or not people only care about the mighty dollar. Someone always ends up getting shafted in any aspect of life.

That about sums it up perfectly. Positive reputations will open up a lot of doors for you, but negative reputations mean fuck all if you can make people money...

Depends...

Obviously we see a lot of people and companies with reputations where some love them, and others hate them. Other have a bad reputation period. Most individuals with a bad rep stear clear, or operate in the shadows. There are plenty who have NO rep, and those are almost as hard to do business with as a BAD rep.

In short, yes it does. I consider what I know, and who's said some of the things I rely on.

I think it does. The reputation of a program is huge. If you hear about a company shaving or stealing, you're going to think twice about putting ads up. Also if they have a history of leaks on their sites, poor conversions, and having sites fold without notice you'll see people shy away. Once a program has been given a bad reputation, it's nearly impossible to overcome.

If you provide services like programming or design and get labeled as providing poor work or not performing at all, you'll have a hard time finding new clients.

Sure there are people out there who don't care about reputation, but many of them are more worried about making friends then doing business.

I'll add that sometimes getting a bad reputation for something can be a great diversion from other things. Take AFF for instance. They get trashed daily on here for having ads on torrent sites and so on. But no one talks about how their conversions have tanked, their sites are down all the time, and they just don't make as much money as other programs these days.

What are your thoughts?
It doesn't matter how long you are in. The only 2 things that do are:
1) what you've done (your projects)
2) what the ppl you had/have business with are thinking about you

Everything else (the reg. date on adult boards, number of posts etc) means nothing because it's not the index of reputation

I think it depends on the damage that has been done some people are able to forgive and forget.

In the end, how do you want to feel at the end of the day?

I would think a scammer/ someone with no integrity/ habitual liar/ etc etc must feel like crap (besides having to look over their shoulder at all times).

Besides, what goes around comes around.

I remember after Internext last year there were people all happy and bubbly talking about how great a person Lawrence Connor is. If THAT guy can undo a reputation - even with ONE PERSON - there's really not a lot you can do where it's not eventually forgiven.

I have done business with people/companies on GFY as a result of positive things I have read about them and their companies, and similarily I have opted to not give my business to other people on GFY whom I believe have demonstrated poor ethical judgement or who I perceive to be negatively impacting the industry (through the support of spyware, buying ad space from known content thieves, etc).

Boards such as this can serve as a moral/ethical compass for those that stray, and can even have the potential to help facilitate communication and positive changes in our industry (although the latter seems to be akin to herding cats at times).

I think there's confusion between a business reputation that you've created with your peers and others you do business with and a GFY reputation thats created for you by the rabble.
one means everything. the other, nothing.
