Can you find a reason for this? (pic)
I'm guessing they didnt wanna scratch the car by laying the hose across the hood?

They had to because the hose is'nt able to go over or through the side of the car. I see they even broke the windows to get it through. They might have been able to run it through the bottum, but I fugure they tried that already.

Since you're not supposed to park next to a fire hydrant, I think the firemen simply decided to teach the car owner a lesson.

That is why it is illegal to park that close to a fire hydrant.

Heheheheheh the fucker got what they deserved! The thing is, sparky will probably have to pay the damages to his car cuz I bet his insurance company won't cover it!
Fire fighters have every right to do stuff like that to pretty much anything that deters them from doing their job...

Been there... done that... I used to be a firefighter. Got a call at 3 in the morning to an apartment fire and I was on the first in truck... actually the only truck. When we arrived there was a car parked in front of the closest hydrant and the fire was going pretty good... I made a command descision... popped the windows and fed the hose through the car.... and the rest is history as they say.... lessons learned: dont park in front of my fire hydrants EVER!
Reminds me of another funny one... got a call to a grocery store and when I pulled up there was some shithead parked in the fire lane... well we had this really nice truck with a big ass bumper on it so I just ease in behind the guy... sirens blaring and he just sits there so... I give him a little shove... about 15 feet as a matter of fact... lessons learned: dont park in my fire lane EVER! |

For the money you might spend on an oldish BMW you could get a newer nicer car with slightly less prestige. But then it wouldn't look crappy either. Some people have no clue.

I would imagine that it would be quicker to slide the hose under the car than busting both windows out and handing the damn thing through to the other guy on the other side.
Come on now, think buddy think... |

I take it none of you have ever seen the movie Backdraft they did the exact same thing in the movie. I don't blame them one bit. The fireman shouldn't have to waste time running a hose under the car or whatnot. They've got a fire to put out and are most likely in a hurry.

Thats why I agreed that they are doing it as a lesson learned. But my point was that it would be approx the same amt of time to just slide it under the car than to take the time to break the windows first.

the driver can't drive off with the hose in it - if they have the hose draped across it/under it the driver could drive off and bust the hose dragging it or running it over. i'd guess. that and it's a great lesson.

way to use your melon!
![]() I could be wrong, but I would think the hose could handle a car driving over it. after all... garden hoses do. |

I'm not trying to get embroiled in the 'should they or shouldn't they have busted the windows' thing but looking at the pic I wouldn't be surprised if they would have had trouble getting the hose under the car. The car is parked in a funny place and very close to the curb. The hose (given its size and the volume of water it has to carry) might not have been able to bend to go under the car. It could just be the pic though, it is hard to see.

For all of you who think it would have been better to place it under the car here are some facts.
The hose in question is 5 inches in diameter The guy at the hydrant is usually there alone due to standard operating procedures. The car was parked illegally and the hydrant operator has to provide a free flowing supply of water so the best way for him to do it was smash the windows to protect the hose. If the car had been recently parked there then the exhaust system would have been to hot to put the hose under the car not to mention there probably isn't a full 5 inches of clearance under the beamer. I have been in this position twice. The firefighter that broke the car windows and shoved the hose through it was within his full right of doing so. Lesson learned don't park near a fire hydrant you never know when it's needed. One other time I pulled up on a blocked fire hydrant there was room in front of the blocking vehicle to push it out of the way ... Thats exactly what I did as driver of the engine that was dropping the 5 inch hose at the hydrant. It caused 2k in damage to the car and after all the court hearings the owner of the car not only had to pay the damages but he also had to pay all my legal fees and the time I missed from work defending the case. Being a volunteer fire fighter is a thankless job at times. |

Sliding it under the car entails trying to get that big-ass ring on the end up from between the street curb and the car once the hose has been slid to that side.
Don't forget also that these hoses EXPAND with water... are the supposed to squat down and measure to make sure the car isn't going to constrict the hose (or the hose lift the car) before they slide it under? They weren't teaching anyone a lesson, they were doing things as quickly as possible to put out a fire and save lives. This does not include trying to get onto the ground with all of that fire gear, scoot a hose under a car hoping it doesn't catch on something, and then try to wedge the ring up between the edge of the curb and the car, and worrying about if the hose will be constricted between said curb and car, or said car and street. |

Basically it does just come down to the fact that the asshole shouldn't have parked there in the first place and undoubtably the firefighters did what they had to do and no more.

B) It may not fit under the car. There's not really time to try different ways of getting the hose around, or under, or over the car, therefore...windows get smashed since that way will definitely work. |
