I was just chatting with some American chick, and she told me about her lunch... a cheeseburger and fries. She seemed to be rather surprised at me being rather surprised at anyone having a cheeseburger and fries for lunch, and said to me that that's a perfectly normal American lunch.

Is that really true?

(before anyone asks: yes, she's fat)

There is nothing that can be deemed typical. It changes from person to person. I have hot lunches usually. Steak and rice with tomato salad or something like that. Sometimes we have ham sandwiches, sometimes we have ice cream.

I find myself brown-bagging a deli meat sandwich, pickle, yogurt, and fruit to work for lunch more often than not these days.

When I don't it's typically either ordering a Taco Salad from the local BBQ joint, a Lamb Gyro or Tuna Melt with potato salad from another joint, Chicken Tarna from a third joint, or pitching in with the office to do pizza.

Then there's business lunches, where it's the fare from whatever dine-in restaurant is the flavor of the day.

Unfortunately a cheeseburger and fries is a pretty popular lunch for many Americans. There are those of us who are really health conscious and eat cheeseburgers once every blue moon and that's about it.

Anything you want it to be baby! We have just about every nationality here. When I lived in LA I would eat everything from Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Persian, French, German, Brazilian, we have every restaurant around. And not to mention, if you are in a big city like LA, they have the grocery stores for these nationalities as well. I use to go to this Persian market and get this cheese that was so damn good my mouth is watering just thinking about it.

But there is nothing wrong with a big FAT CHEESEBURGER with FRIES, and not that McDonalds crap either. That is just food on the go when traveling or no time to stop and eat food.

I guess it depends on the type of person you ask, just like in any country. There are people who do not explore what their country offers, and there are people who do. I do. So if you ask me that question you will get the above response.

Loryn is right, living in Los Angeles is different from the rest of the typical mid-western/southern states that make up most of America. We are a melting pot of cultures and have anything we want for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

I rarely have the same thing for lunch every day. Most of the time, I go to this Italian place and grab one of their pannini sandwiches, a salad or eat leftovers from our mothers cooking.

I eat a burger maybe 1-2X a year, and usually it's a 'gourmet' type of burger, not fast-food from McD's, BK, etc.

It depends what I'm in the mood for, but most of my co-workers are the sandwich and soda type. We also go for burritos about once a week. I guess a lot depends on where you're located and what types of food are accessible

There are maybe 2 dozen restaurants within a few miles of our office.

A Subway, burger place, Chilis, Applebees, 2 BBQ places, 3 pizza places, an italian restaurant, a chinese restaurant, Mexican restaurant, a Hawaiian restaurant (aloha!), Indian, Panera Bread, Crispers, and some others. They are always pretty busy during lunchtime so just look at those menu's. I'd say most who take a lunch to work have a sandwich or microwavable lunch of some sort.

Greasy, heavy, lots of salt, no fibre, no nutritional value... eating that for lunch would leave me absolutely nauseous. However my lunch pretty much 6 days out of the week is usually cicken kebabs cause its pretty damn balanced

2 Chicken breasts + secret spices
3 large pitta breads made by the baker down the road
lettuce off the back garden (well atm while its growing)
tomatoes out the greenhouse
chopped onions from the back garden
hot pepper sauce

LA is Burgerland. the best burgers to be had reside here: The Counter, Father's Office, The Apple Pan, ahhhhhh.

fresh ingredients, lots of choices, and gotta love the sweet potato fries.
