What is a typical American lunch?

I was just chatting with some American chick, and she told me about her lunch... a cheeseburger and fries. She seemed to be rather surprised at me being rather surprised at anyone having a cheeseburger and fries for lunch, and said to me that that's a perfectly normal American lunch.

Is that really true? :helpme

(before anyone asks: yes, she's fat)

Brother Bilo 07-06-2007 10:02 AM

4 or 5 pints of beer is about standard. Makes the rest of the day go smooth.

Fat Panda 07-06-2007 10:03 AM

i usaully have a deli meat sandwich with some type of fruit....not....taco bell and sodas here

Elli 07-06-2007 10:04 AM

I'm not quite American, but I've been making myself wraps or sandwiches for lunch lately. In the winter I prefer soup or vegetarian chili.

pornguy 07-06-2007 10:04 AM

There is nothing that can be deemed typical. It changes from person to person. I have hot lunches usually. Steak and rice with tomato salad or something like that. Sometimes we have ham sandwiches, sometimes we have ice cream.

I find myself brown-bagging a deli meat sandwich, pickle, yogurt, and fruit to work for lunch more often than not these days.

When I don't it's typically either ordering a Taco Salad from the local BBQ joint, a Lamb Gyro or Tuna Melt with potato salad from another joint, Chicken Tarna from a third joint, or pitching in with the office to do pizza.

Then there's business lunches, where it's the fare from whatever dine-in restaurant is the flavor of the day.

The Dawg 07-06-2007 10:12 AM

I normally have a PB & J, chips and ice tea. :)

frostyimpressions 07-06-2007 10:15 AM

Unfortunately a cheeseburger and fries is a pretty popular lunch for many Americans. There are those of us who are really health conscious and eat cheeseburgers once every blue moon and that's about it.

Donkey Punch 07-06-2007 10:16 AM

deli turkey&swiss with a couple chips.

drinking a Nestle Pure Life water.

Loryn 07-06-2007 10:22 AM

Anything you want it to be baby! We have just about every nationality here. When I lived in LA I would eat everything from Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Persian, French, German, Brazilian, we have every restaurant around. And not to mention, if you are in a big city like LA, they have the grocery stores for these nationalities as well. I use to go to this Persian market and get this cheese that was so damn good my mouth is watering just thinking about it.

But there is nothing wrong with a big FAT CHEESEBURGER with FRIES, and not that McDonalds crap either. That is just food on the go when traveling or no time to stop and eat food. :winkwink:

I guess it depends on the type of person you ask, just like in any country. There are people who do not explore what their country offers, and there are people who do. I do. So if you ask me that question you will get the above response. :thumbsup

LilBro 07-06-2007 10:23 AM

id say most americans opt for a 2000 calorie lunch and 50g of Fat as they drive thru to the next window....

my wife usually has a sandwhich or salad. If I eat lunch with her i usually have a salad

RP Fade 07-06-2007 10:43 AM

Loryn is right, living in Los Angeles is different from the rest of the typical mid-western/southern states that make up most of America. We are a melting pot of cultures and have anything we want for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

I rarely have the same thing for lunch every day. Most of the time, I go to this Italian place and grab one of their pannini sandwiches, a salad or eat leftovers from our mothers cooking.

I eat a burger maybe 1-2X a year, and usually it's a 'gourmet' type of burger, not fast-food from McD's, BK, etc.

RobertD 07-06-2007 10:43 AM

Yes, deep fried fat and sugar with some form of potato = typical american fat fuck lunch.

Sure, lots of people have lots of different tastes.

I am mainly thinking of what the average, lower middle class, non-adventurous, small-town person would eat most often.

You are right, most of middle-america does not have the luxuries and choices we do and it's fast-food or pizza.

Burger and fries.

teg0 07-06-2007 10:50 AM

I wouldn't say Cheeseburger and French Fries is typical, but I would say some sort of sandwich at least. Usually at some fast food place.

Shanna 07-06-2007 10:51 AM

It depends what I'm in the mood for, but most of my co-workers are the sandwich and soda type. We also go for burritos about once a week. I guess a lot depends on where you're located and what types of food are accessible

ADL Colin 07-06-2007 10:52 AM

There are maybe 2 dozen restaurants within a few miles of our office.

A Subway, burger place, Chilis, Applebees, 2 BBQ places, 3 pizza places, an italian restaurant, a chinese restaurant, Mexican restaurant, a Hawaiian restaurant (aloha!), Indian, Panera Bread, Crispers, and some others. They are always pretty busy during lunchtime so just look at those menu's. I'd say most who take a lunch to work have a sandwich or microwavable lunch of some sort.

If you ever end up at our studio/office for whatever reason.. or are in the neighborhood, we'll have to go to this little place down the street... "Le Fun Cafe" - across the street from the courthouse... makes the best Lamb Gyro I've ever had.

Voodoo 07-06-2007 11:16 AM

I usually have a diet coke or coffee and a cigarette for lunch. Sometimes I have a plate of broccoli.

Greasy, heavy, lots of salt, no fibre, no nutritional value... eating that for lunch would leave me absolutely nauseous. I basically know nobody who eats that stuff more than once or twice a month, and nobody I know would even think of having it for lunch unless nothing else was available. Just like I know nobody who would eat a box of chocolate and consider it a real lunch.

I'm just kinda puzzled by it.

Monique Niccole 07-06-2007 12:47 PM

There is no "typical" American lunch. I ate rabbit and rice today, had a burrito from Moe's yesterday, and eat either a salad or a sandwich most days.

Kevin Cunningham 07-06-2007 12:47 PM

I'm American, eat very healthy, not the typical American diet but still grab a burger and fries at least once a month I'd say.

Jimmy Rock 07-06-2007 01:09 PM

Taco Bell

Even deli meat is sometimes not healthy because of the sodium.

It tastes better than it looks, just put a shitload of vinegar on it !

Sands 07-06-2007 03:55 PM

Cup of coffee, five cigarettes, and I eat the filters and styrofoam cup afterwards. I try to stay away from cheeseburgers and fries... just too unhealthy.

LOL sorry man just not true.
I've lived in LA, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Arizona...grew up in Texas.
All of these places I have lived have had other cultures represented there along with their foods.

Tasty!

CosmicTang 07-06-2007 04:24 PM

cheeseburger and fries is very american and not uncommon for sure.

LA is Burgerland. the best burgers to be had reside here: The Counter, Father's Office, The Apple Pan, ahhhhhh.

fresh ingredients, lots of choices, and gotta love the sweet potato fries.

Healthy? No.
Eaten everyday? Certainly not.
Enjoyed as a treat every so often? You bet your ass.

AlienQ - BANNED FOR LIFE 07-06-2007 04:33 PM

Americans don't eat lunch.

shekinah 07-06-2007 04:34 PM

I eat rice and fried chicken or any delicious viand for lunch...:)
