WHAT THE HELL! Toronto is trying to implement a tax to club owners where they will have to rent out space on the sidewalk since there customers wait in line there?! This will obviously fall off onto the patrons shoulders to pay in higher drink prices/cover etc!!
When will the government stop taxing everything for extra cash?! Greedy Bastards!

Agreed. We already get raped with taxes, now we will have to be subject to an even more ridiculous one! we already pay taxes to have the sidewalk built, why should we have to pay a tax to stand there while we wait to get into a entertainment venue!

The business should be billed directly for the police presence. They need to provide security at their establishments, after all, and make sure that undersirable behaviour of their customers doesn't affect the neighbours of the business.
Taxing the whole city is ridiculous. ugh.

Im saying technically we already are paying from our normal day to day taxes. If they send this tax to the clubs, the clubs themselves will just raise prices of the cover or drinks to make up for it. So wel will just be paying more in the end.

I have to agree....In New York City street vendors like hot dog guys and people that setup tables to sell sunglasses have to pay for a permit for using public space for business. Also a dollar store in my area got a warning for having stuff outside on a table as part of a small rummage sale.
I see the city's pov in this instance as well as with the clubs |

I agree, not everyone should be taxed but only the people that are benefiting from the the clientiele, somewhat like paying for an extra permit, but in actuality paying for police presence to ensure safety. Bomber

Do the people who organise walks and stuff like that pay for the police too ? The cops are there to do their job and the economy is rolling. Private business shouldn't have to pay extra for police. |

On the flip side, maybe the bouncers won't keep people outside so much and try to get them in faster.

I think it's a great idea.
The city of Toronto found a way to levy a tax (by proxy) on the illegal drug trade that is operated throughout the nightclubs downtown.

That's no good.... All the nightclubs will increase prices someway to keep their profitability.
In the end, consumers will be paying for this new tax. ![]()

1st. you people should know the clubs pay for the police presents in the first place.
yes .. they pay off duty police officers to watch and guard the clubs. what doesn't make any since is this stupid tax, how can they charge a rent fee for using the side walk when the side walk belongs to the Establishment in the first place. yes.. that is actually the property of the owner.. its just that the city confiscate it for the use of the public when you actually look at property lines when you buy a property in Toronto .. you would see the side walk is part of your property so .. now they will charge club owners rent fee to rent their own space back lol .. unbelievable if clubs cause crimes then charge them for that .. a tax to increase overall police presents . but don't charge them to rent their own properties .. that's just crazy |

They tax those that don't have a voice (or a voice that they care about). If they imposed a tax for lawyers and doctor's offices it wouldn't go anywhere: They are considered a "somebody", club owners and patrons are not.
(And yes, I know that the lawyer/doctor offices aren't, typically at least, on the street, just trying to make a point |

why would there be a need for a police presence or security?
I was under the impression that there was no violence or no guns, and it's so peaceful up there that everybody leaves just their doors and windows unlocked.. |

In the US, some local governments require Home Depot to install shelter and bathroom facilities outside where the illegal immigrants hang out trying to get some american to hire them to do home improvements or landscaping. Home Depot, Lowes and such stores are trying to get an amendment into the immigration bill that will overrule these local laws.
Amazing that you these people can be complete lawbreakers, AND the governments not only dont care, they force legal businesses to shelter them! What a couple of retarded governments we have..

Ya, it's pretty fucked up indeed. Along with the alcohol tax they have also proposed, this is getting well out of hand.
I was saying to my friends yesterday that if they are actually successful in passing these taxes I am going into politics, either as a city councillor or perhaps mayor. The problem is that I fucking loath politicians and have little to no interest in being in the public eye. That said, someone with some strength of conviction needs to step up and put an end to this shit. Luckily I have a background in politics, having taken it in university and being active when I was younger in campaigns at the city and provincial level. So who knows, I may have a snowballs chance in hell of being elected.

That's only a partial truth. Where I went to university I never locked my door and never had any problems (the city was half a million). But you have to take into account that in the club district there are lots of people in a small place and most of them are drunk. That is always going to be a recipe for disaster, or at the very least result in a few minor altercations. It is not a reflection of what it is like to live in Canada. Also you have to keep in mind that Toronto is not a very good indication of what Canada is like as a country, we just happen to be the biggest city.

Here in my city I think they charge clubs/cafe's for the sidewalk space they use for serving outdoors...don't think they charge for people just standing there though. Talk about a tax grab
