The Lake Tahoe Fire is about to get A LOT WORSE!

They had less than a day to get it under control after it flared up Sunday. Winds were very calm yesterday but they are kicking up now. The smoke was south of Reno but now I can't even see the Sierra-Nevada mtns for the smoke.

The fire has jumped Hwy 89 (89 runs up the west side of the lake) and looks like nothing is going to stop it. Winds are forecast to get stronger over the next few days as a cold front approaches.

God bless the 2000 firefighters battling this fire but it is almost an unbeatable foe with the winds we are getting.

250+ homes destroyed
2700 acres burned

they have instituted more mandatory evacuations of some neighborhoods all the way to the lake though.

no doubt more structures will burn, which sucks but overall they seem to think they have the needed equipment to get it controled with the current wether forcast and that is a good thing.

don't take this wrong, but that could be a good thing. as you know home prices in the area are insane. the ugly burnt areas will have much lower prices because of the blight. buy NOW and in 2-5 years you will not even know there was a fire. from the footoge I have seen most of the residentual areas were not a crown fire, meaning that the big trees are still there. it burnt all the lower duff and mid level branches which will grow back more healthy then before.

it's insanely true, too. I've seen so many areas grow back more lush than ever after a fire.

Well, that is a given . . . however, I have my doubts that property values are going to drop much as a result.

friendly wager.

I say at least 15% if not 20% there were already some desperate deals on the market in the area.

One can only wish but snowfall was like 28% of average this year and I believe so far in Reno this year we have had 0.25 inches of rain.

The real estate market has actually been in the crapper there for nearly a couple years now. The latest year-on-year median price data is down 19.7%.

So will someone please institute a working forest management policy? No? Alright, we'll just wait for next year...

Very difficult in the Tahoe region. Numerous overlapping jurisdictions.

Yeah, I thought that might be the case. Here in BC it's up to each town to make sure it's fire safe, pretty much. Apparently the province warned 3,000 towns that they were in fire risk zones. Only 18 or so of those towns acted on that and have since cleared fire breaks around the houses. What a failure of people to take matters into their own hands and get shit done.
