Last night my girl dog got on the counter when I was gone and ate a pan full of vegetable oil. Around 4am she started throwing up REALLY badly and hasn't stopped. She is shaking a little but that might just be from the system shock. Everything i have read so far says vegetable oil is not harmful but does anyone else have any experience in this? Should I really worry and take her to the vet?

Like I said on the other board - call the vet. If it isn't a big deal I would rather go and be told that then not go and just wait to see if something bad happens.

my dog had something similar happen when he ate half a pizza...kept throwing up...called the vet and they told me to check his stool for blood...he had diareahha but no blood so they told me to wait a day or so and not feed him for 48 hours and see if it improves...after the first day he still had the runs but it cleared up within 2 days.

Would suggesting a nice glaze and 375 in the oven for 2 hours be in bad taste?

I am not going to say to not call the vet, but I know I was adding it to my dog's food for a while and it made him fart like nobodies business. I imagine a lot would probably cause their body to expel it any way it could

I called the vet. They put me on hold a couple times and to me it is sounding like they just want me to come in and become a client with them. I have not found a vet since I moved and when I told them I was not a client there they were like well, maybe you should bring her in but it doesn't have to be right away, maybe later today or tomorrow. If it was an emergency you think they would have said get her in right away.

The worst thing like this with my spaniel so far was when she ate a bunch of bagbalm antiseptic. She had amazingly colourful poo for a few days as the antiseptic worked its way through her system and the vet said to just let it work through but I needed to take her and let him tell me that.

Take her to the vet. If she is vomiting, she can dehydrate, and that is bad.

Yes, making sure she is drinking everytime she pukes. She was out laying in the sun for a bit so I guess that is a good sign.

He'll probably be fine. The dog threw it up right? If not she may be trying to hold it in..

Atleast your dog didn't eat a bag of BBQ rib bones. My dog had to have surgery because he was shitting blood. They found a bunch of sharp bones in his ass that were stuck in the walls.. Ouch!

The vomiting is a good thing, she is just cleaning out her stomach.. if she is dehydrated, make sure she has SMALL drinks often, not big drinks, as that can cause more vomiting.. You don't want her tearing something in her gut from wrenching.. so moderate everything, and take the vets advice absolutely. |

You can't leave stuff like that out where your dog can get it. Dogs are little small kids, they will eat anything. My black lab is almost four now. When she was one I had left a bowl of small candy canes on the table for guests to eat since it was around Christmas time. I came back and she had eaten the whole bowl. That was 25 candy canes. So I took her to the vet and they said she will be fine, but that dogs are like toddlers and will eat anything. Husker has eaten crayons, a pencil, she even ate through half of the door on the side of my house. So now I don't leave anything down that I think she will eat. I dog proofed the house, and have had no problems since. Thankfully my German Shepherd doesn't eat anything in site. |

OK so she hasn't been sick since 11am. I called they vet again and they said nothing to worry about. That dog has been through worse. Already had to have her stomach pumped when we first got her cause a roommate left some painkillers out. The next time they got a hold of vicadin they ate the bottle and left the pills alone LOL At least they learned as I hope is the case this time. I am pretty good at doggy proofing the house but they are very resourcful when it comes to food.

I worry for the dog. If your kid was choking would you post here or take him to a hospital?

A few weeks ago we had coooked an entire ham, and shortly before cutting it up I stepped away from the kitchen. I came back, the damn ham was gone, and my black lab was sitting there licking herself.

The ASPCA's Animal Poison Control Center hotline (which charges a $45-per-case fee, but is available 24 hours a day) is 888-426-4435

TushyCash is pet friendly! This is our office dog named "Tush" A few months ago she ate some mushrooms she found in our back yard and we called them and they were very helpful. Good luck! ![]() |

Wow she is adorable. Thanks for that number. I will have to write it down. I try and hide things from the dogs but they still occasionally get into things. They like to wait until the vet is closed to do it. |

I had a rottie/black lab cross that used to get into everthing when I would leave him home alone. He once ate a whole bag of twizzlers that my girlfriend had left on the coffee table. He knew how to open the cuboards in the kithchen and would eat whatever he could get his paws on. He ate half a bag of raw oatmeal one day. He would also eat garbage. My friends that were living downstairs at the time would tell me that as soon as I would leave they would hear the dog knock over the garbage can in the kitchen and start snacking. I am really surprised that he didn't die or get seriously ill from some of the stuff that he used to eat.

He had to be put down when he was about 15, he had some inoperable tomours that were causing him to seizure. He of course had to wait till late in the evening to have the massive seizure that caused me to take him to see the vet. The only vet that was open at the time was the 24 hour emergency vet located downtown which costs $200 just to walk in the door. They started an iv, did some tests, and in the end had to euthanize him, it all cost close to $700. The dog that I have now never eats or gets into anything. I can leave food (even his dog cookies) on the coffee table and go out all day and he will not have touched the cookies or anything else. He never chewed up shoes or clothing or anything he wasn't suppose to when he was a puppy except for the toys that I would give him. The funny thing is that he is a pitbull and they are notorious for chewing the hell out of things and getting into mischief. His brother on the other hand (which makingcoin owns) is a chewing machine. He loves to rip the hell out of pillows, hats, shoes and whatever else he can get his paws on. Shit he will even rip coin's shirts, pants, jackets etc. while he is wearing them when coin comes home drunk and passes out. He wakes up the next day and he his pants that he has on will have one leg missing his shirt will be missing the collar or a sleave he will have the soles chewed off of his shoes. He has even jacked pepperoni sticks that I had in my hand and was eating. He was smart about it as well, he would distract me and while I was trying to get him to stop messing around with whatever I was holding in the other hand he would lunge and snatch the pepperoni out of my hand. Other than that though he is well behaved and friendly. He will sit, lie down, shake a paw etc. on command. He is just really mischievious and playfull I think he figures it's like a game and he has fun messing with us. Good luck with your dog, I am sure she will be fine, dogs are pretty resilliant and can usually ingest a lot of wierd things without having too many problems. You should be carefull of dehydration though if she is throwing up alot. |
