Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey are 2 of the greatest signers of all time:

if you dont recognize their talent you are a fucking idiot, and i seriously believe that, you are a complete idiot.

they have voices that are God given, some of the greatest talents to ever live.

real music from the soul.

Not true. He's got incredible vocal talent, as do they. Back in the day he was arguably a far superior singer to John Lennon, Roger Daltry and Mick Jagger. I'd say out of that time-frame only Robert Plant would rival him, maybe Bowie.

As for Houston and Carey, people wonder why American Idol contenstants have such a hard time singing their songs, when it's patently obvious that just as you said, Whitney Houston and Maria Carey are in an entirely different stratosphere all together. The average wannabe can't hope to compare, so I don't know why 99.9% of the AI contestants even bother trying to attempt their songs.

Elton John needed crazy costumes to get noticed, i am talking about raw God given talent, he has God given talent but these ladies did not have to do any kind of gimmicks to put on a show.

If that's true then she fell far short of her potential. Mariah has far FAR outstripped anything Kim Wilde ever accomplished, and has attained an iconic level of fame. Kim Wilde, is she even on the radar these days?

Some might dispute that, but I'll agree with you. Back in her "heyday" I seem to remember Kim Wilde as being quite a looker.

That makes me laugh. I'd say Whitney Huston is up there but Mariah, give me a break. She has a good upper range and a decent voice, but if you look at her catalogue she doesn't have very many good songs. If you want to talk about the style of pop music that Mariah sings then Christina Aguilera is by far superior.

You seriously don't think Elton John is in the same league? That's laughable too. That man has been entertaining people since 61 and was releasing three albums a year in the 70's. There is a reason his song was chosen to honor the life of Princess Diana. Just because you don't like him or his music does not detract from the fact that he is both a good singer and performer.

On a side note, if you do a search for Mariah you will see that she has released only 10 albums in her 17 year career...one of which is a soundtrack to her movie and another is a christmas album. So I'm not really too sure what you are basing your opinion on. But I suppose that is the beauty of art, everyone has a different opinion and likes something different.

They are good singers but lately they play about with the nots too much, aguilera does the same. Sometimes they should sing the song and use emotion rather than technique.

That was just part of his showmanship. He had and still has incredible vocal range and performs well in a wide range of musical styles, and is himself a virtuoso musician. I don't see where one can't acknowledge the talent of all 3.

But he probably should have said Elvis. After all, I'd bet money on the fact that more people in history used the words "God given talent" to describe him than all others combined.

Ok, now we are getting delusional. Do you think Mariah Carey gets by on vocal talent alone? Give me a break, she a product of pop culture and our obsession with fame and beauty. Sure she has a decent voice, but everyone knows the reason she is so famous is because of her looks and then her voice. Kind of reminds me of why everyone like Britney Spears or why people can't stop talking about Paris Hilton.

Elton John can entertain a stadium with just a piano and a microphone. Understand what you are talking about before you write it down.

"doesnt have many good songs" you are absolutley crazy, she has some of the best songs in history, look at songs like "Hero" "We Belong Together"

comparing Christina Aguilera to Mariah is laughable.

you are laughable because you cannot read properly, where did i say i did not like Elton John? no where, you are pulling things out of your ass and it is obvious.

I am talking about raw god given talent, i never said he was not good, but he uses gimmicks in his music that made him more popular.

it is not opinion, i have heard her live, as i said before anyone who disputes her talent is a complete idiot, it is not open for argument, anyone with half an ear drum can hear it.

Btw I would put Whitney far above Mariah for pure vocal talent.

And if you think these ladies haven't used "costumes" of sorts to perform in then man, you haven't seen any of their live performances. If you don't call those tight slinky and often flashy flamboyant cleavage-showing outfits costumes I don't know what is. :D

No, Elvis was just the first person to recognize how good "black" music was back then and had the balls to experience it and use it to his advantage. I am not bashing Elvis, but to say he has the most god given talent in the history of new music just does not make sense. What about Jimi Hendrix? He invented new chord voicings and had a totally new and different approach to the guitar. Or there is Clapton too. I could go on.

Things were different back then, cant really compare them. She retired in the early 90's. It wasent the same Celep race as there is today

Clapton & Hendrix aren't vocalists I would put in league with Elvis. Just as I wouldn't put Elvis in league with them for guitar talent. Let's at least compare apples to apples, yes?

I wholeheartedly disagree with you on what you said about Elvis, to a word, so to me as I'm sure it is to the 100's of millions of Elvis's fans around the world the anser is "YES", not "no" to what I said. And I'm okay with that. :D

I wasn't even talking about Elvis's style of music, I was refering specifically to his voice and his vocal ability, which I have no idea why you would want to argue with me that it's not "God-given", when it so obviously is, or rather was. The man's voice was unique, his range incredible. He could sing any style of music from whitebread pop to old school country to folk or R&B and back again. Elvis could entertain an entire stadium with just a microphone, never mind the piano.

I'm 44, how old are you?

You just answered your own point.... she retired. And you were after all the one who first compared them in this thread, I merely responded to that. She may or may not have had more talent than other performers, but since she never really did much with her career beyond the little she did do back in the day I suppose we'll never know.

Listen...My point is that Mariah is so popular because she is obviously beautiful. The comparison to Britney and Paris is to simply point out that our culture is very interested in the lives of popular and good looking girls. Britney can't sing, that is obvious and I am not saying she can. They are not in the same category as Mariah as far as vocal talents, but she is basically the same when you consider that she has used publicity very much to her advantage to advance her career.

You had said earlier that Elton is not in the same category, that is what I was responding to before because he is in that category.

My comparison of Mariah to Christina is a simple one, Christina has a good voice and one that is similar to Mariah. At this point I would not say that she is "one of the best singers ever" but I think in another decade or so she will be there. I've seen both perform and Christina is better from what I have seen at least.

The fact that I listen to Rock doesn't make a lick of difference since I listen to a lot of different music. In fact my favorite album is not even a rock album, rock just happens to usually suit my mood.

Mine is, so I'll go on "record" as saying that that's not a bad thing. In fact I LOVE classic rock, but I do have a wide appreciation for many other types of music, songs and performers.

But that rap shit you listen to is still that, ... shit. Mind-mushing shit.

Fair enough, I missed the point then, and I will agree with you that he had a very unique voice. I have a tendency to look at the music as a whole so I am sorry.

Celine Dion is a way better vocalist.

My favorite type of music is whatever I am in the mood for. I have thousands of albums across most genres. I stear clear of country and my hip-hop is pretty slim these days too although I do try to give it a listen when I am around people who know the good shit. Oh, I guess I don't listen to polka either, lol.

You just answered your own point.... she retired. And you were after all the one who first compared them in this thread, I merely responded to that. She may or may not have had more talent than other performers, but since she never really did much with her career beyond the little she did do back in the day I suppose we'll never know.
Close to the same age - 40+ at least.
I compared their talents and abilities. I will not deny they wasn't the biggest star, but neither was Tasmin Archer, but both had talents and voices that was far superior to many of today's "stars"

Kim Wilde was huge here in Europe, don't know how bug she was in the US

She got very big for a while, had some top songs out, one very famous poster as I recall.... and then she just sort of faded off the radar. People still know her name, but if she walked past me on the street today I might think "nice tits" but I doubt I'd recognize her. I would recognize Mariah Carey in a splitsecond though.

I'll admit that of the thousands of albums that I have Rock makes up the majority. But to be honest, I usually go for music that suits my mood. I try to give most things a chance but tend to avoid country and hip hop (although I do try to listen to it when I am around people who know the good shit). I guess I don't listen to polka either. Besides, pop music is a lot of ballads and so is classic rock, so the two go hand in hand. If you look at the song structure and chords that are used, they are pretty damn similar. But if you want to categoriz me, you'd have to understand that I love music and pay pretty close attention to most genres and try to know in general what is going on. I promise you that as a guitar and bass player I do have an ear and know what I am talking about for the most part.

Like I said before, the cool thing about art and music is that everyone has their own opinions and what works for you may not work for me.

Another vid from that same Madonna concert : https://youtube.com/watch?v=NowX8...elated&search=

Proof you don't need to scream (like Whitney and Mariah) to have a great sounding voice !

This one rocks aswell !!

Yes, Mariah is a classicaly trained opera singer and she does have an incredible range. However, she does cheat a bit in the studio including things like heavily amplified whistle tones being passed off as very high notes.
