XBOX 360 repair?
Anyone know of any decent XBOX 360 repair places? My cousin just brought his machine to me last night. He had the cdtray catch on a bracelot or something when he was backing up after putting a new game in. The whole cd tray that comes out, came all the way out of the drive.
Before I void his warranty by opening up, and getting into the drive I was wondering if anyone might have some other ideas? I got it put back into the drive a little bit, and then powered it on hoping it would go all the way back in but no luck. The machine detected it wasn't there and gave me 4 red lights right way. |

How old is the console? If its under a year, send it to M$.
Best to also hit up the 360 site. They can best help on repairing it. They're generally pretty quick.

Do you know of any decent message boards? He got tired of waiting on hold when calling M$, so I might do it just to see what they would charge to repair it. I'm pretty sure I can fix it, but might as well send it to them if it is under warranty.

Anyone who's going to be able to fix them is going to void the warranty by opening it up anyhow. If it's still under warranty, just send it back to MS and they'll have it back to you within 10 days.
If you're going to void the warranty and open it, you can pick up the drives on eBay no problem. I had a few here, but managed to sell them off pretty quickly. If anyone needs or wants used games, hit me up...I've got a huge box sitting here waiting to sell. I've sold most of them for less than you'd pick them up at EBGames. |

If its still under a year since purchase, M$ is the best way to go as they'll do it for free.

yeah, called m$ and it ran out of warranty on April 29th. I'll crack it open and see if I can get the tray put back in the drive. If not we will have to order one ebay.
m$ wanted $139 to fix it since it is out of warranty. |

Should be a pretty easy fix if its just one of the gears that move the cd tray.
Ive never fixed a xbox but I have done lots of CD drisk drives as well as a couple ps2's. I would think it would be about the same. Usualy broken plastic or wheel or just came off track

yeah I don't see broken plastic on the actual tray that came out, and I can push it in so far and then it tries to grab it but doesn't all the way. I've had my PS2 apart plenty of times so this shouldn't be a problem.
Candy do you know if I have to buy a specific drive since there are different models for different 360's? |

You can use the different drives, but there's an extra step involved in there somewhere...not sure what it is though. I think...would have to check before you dive in. I've replaced a few, same drive for same brand drive. Swapping the actual drive out should take about 5 minutes. No different from doing it to your PC.
Check the XBox Scene page for more info. I'll look and see what I can come up with too. The Walmart suggestion might work too...they take ANYTHING Back. ![]() |

LOL yeah they do take anything back, maybe he can just exchange it for an elite system lol and pay the extra cost. They don't look hard to get open from what I have seen, if you have some small tools. Do you think I will be able to open up the drive and put the tray back in so it is level etc? |

It's a small hex for the screws. Getting the case off can be tricky, the first time...takes me about 2 minutes now. You just need something small to poke a few little tabs to pull it apart and then 6 screws to pull the case apart. Pulling the drive out is just like doing it on your PC, maybe even a little easier. I've replaced a few lasers already for a few friends. Lots of issues with the older models now that they're all out of warranty. You shouldn't have any problem with it and from start to finish, first time should be less than 1 hour. |

I'm up and down every few minutes here at the shop. Here are a few tutorials I have bookmarked.
Opening the XBox 360 - http://www.anandtech.com/systems/sho...spx?i=2610&p=2 Here's a photo with the two most common drives: ![]() Drop me an email webmaster at insomniaccash.com if you have any questions or post them here...I'll answer 'em as I have a chance. |
