Flucking bastids!

Recently we have noticed that your web site(s) is consuming a
disproportionate amount of server resources (including memory and/or cpu
time). Because of this, we have had to move your account off of the
shared hosting server to an auxilliary server. We now request that you
consider purchasing a Managed or other Dedicated Server in order to
continue hosting with 1&1 Internet.

The decision to move your account was made by the system administrators
in order to improve the quality of service for the rest of our clients
on the shared server from which you were previously hosted. The
resources consumed by your account threatened the ability of that server
to capably operate as as a shared host, so it was required that your
account be moved in order to mitigate server load. Though we could move
your site back to the original shared hosting server, it is not
recommended. Your account activity has demonstrated that your site
deserves its own server to better suit its performance needs.

Please visit 1and1.com to review the server products we offer. You will
have one (1) month to make a decision and migrate your account over to a
1&1 server or another host provider. You can choose to return your
account back to the shared server, provided that you take steps to
reduce the load generated by your websites. If the account has to be
moved off the shared server system again you will only have the option
of purchasing a dedicated server account to continue hosting with 1&1
Internet.

Please reply to this email promptly. Further questions/comments should

you store in Web Site Space or transmit using 1&1's Services or
Equipment shall at all times be free from any and all damaging software
defects, including, but not limited to, software "viruses", "worms",

software or hardware disruption or failure, reduced computer operating
speed, or compromise any security system. You agree that you will not
attempt to access the 1&1 Equipment or web site or another customer's
web site without authorization.

This is also stated explicitly to you when you connect via SSH to your
account:

"Shell access is provided for web development and not for running
irc-bots, arbitrary tcp/udp servers (e.g. gameservers) or cracking
toolkits. Disregard leads to suspension of your contract."

Please remove the software at this time and do not attempt to use it
again. Be aware that further infractions can result in the suspension or
termination of your contract.

1) Chmod the site back!
2) No where does it say you can't run a proxy!
3) IF IT'S NOT CHANGED BACK, YOU CAN CANCEL ALL CONTRACTS IMMEDIATELY!

Fuck that! I wasn't going to run a proxy off of my servers! Hellz no! They didn't state it in their TOS so fuck them!! I'll put it up on one of my servers now.

As a System and Network Administrator who deals with proxies, daily, I can tell you this:

They're poorly written.
They abuse the CPU.
They abuse the network.

This may not sound like much, but once they get popular, they're nearly impossible to deal with on a shared system. Here's why as simply as possible:

You have, say, 100 'slots' open for browsers.

A proxy request for a page loads it in, rewrites it to use the proxy, and every picture, css, et al, file is then sucked through the proxy, and rewritten as necessary.

The front page to MySpace has about 20 elements. That means one hit for MySpace takes up 20% of all available slots. Now, it slows down the system and other people need to wait to use the server.

Now take that, and multiply that by about 50 concurrent users, at least.

For an account paying $2 to $10 a month. Heck, many are up for a full month on the $1 introductory price, 'forget' to pay the next month, and are then on to their new host.

This does not even take into account the cost of the bandwidth involved.

Granted, if you were NOT actually running the proxy, a bot may have found it; there's a reason they noticed it, and it's not because they have time to look for 'proxy' on every server. They only did that to ensure that their system was accessible by other people who were paying what you were, and were not overtly, or directly abusing the system.

Another problem with proxies: Many poorly coded ones hijack other sites, and no matter if it's done by intent or just a malfunction, this can cause ALOT of troubles because you can end up with loads of stolen content on your domain. They are used for kicking competitors from google as well. So, most hosts won't even let you run them on a dedicated server.
