Roger,
Have your doctor test you for allergies before you take any anti-depressant drugs . ![]() Try Melatonin if you have sleeping problems. It is a dietary supplement. My husband swears by it . Xanax is suppose to be used for only a short term period of about 2 weeks.... shame shame on the doctors !

Needless to say that after they found Multiple Sclerosis from an MRI scan my stress and anxiety levels have only increased. I've always been hesitant of prescription mood-enhancers, I'm more comfortable with a *bowl* of relief than a trillion dollar medical campaign. We'll see how this Celexa works, but at $160 a month I'd rather have a fat sack. ![]() |

Wow. GFY becomes the anxiety/panic support forum!
Roger you've received tons of great advice. One thing I have not seen mentioned is to make sure you keep yourself properly hydrated. It was explained to me that dehydration can trigger an increased heart rate, which then triggers the panic attack. Since my first attack about ten years ago, I've made it a habit to drink water throughout the day and to always have bottled water with me in the car. It's a terribly simple thing, but it really does seem to have helped. I haven't had a full-fledged attack in ages. In my experience, low blood sugar can also be a trigger. Good luck, and don't let anyone tell you this is something you just have to live with. You don't. ;)

Many of the treatments that are effective for depression also happen to work for anxiety. The reason for this is NOT because doctors are just prescribing depression meds for anxiety. The reason is because in many many instances, the same chemical imbalances that cause depression also cause anxiety. Sometimes one, sometimes the other, or sometimes both. Seretonin has been proven beyond any shadow of doubt to be a major player in the role of anxiety, and therefore is why many of the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI's) are tremendously effective in treating anxiety. Also, Paxil is MARKETED as effective for social phobia/anxiety and that is true, but that is just a marketing gimmick. Paxil is an SSRI as is prozac and so many others. You are right that SmithKline is a tricky marketing company and they zero'd in on the social anxiety angle because it is a lucrative market. But Paxil is NOT only for anxiety of the social phobia kind, that is simply a clever marketing angle. Paxil is a MIRACLE worker for Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). Many, MANY depression medications are also effective anxiety medications, and that is because of the chemical processes in the brain that makes this an undisputable fact. Quiet, see a doctor, and drop me an email if you'd like. I can share a wealth of information with you. Best of luck and hang in there. |

I also want to add that Xanax and similar drugs are the worst of the worst and should be avoided if possible. Responsible doctors won't even prescribe them long term whatsoever. It is a highly addictive substance that is essentially like poppoing a case of beer per pill, plus some.
Using meds like Xanax long term will leave you a drug seeking addict most of the time. It is a bad situation and does NOTHING to treat the underlying cause of anxiety, it is simply sedating your entire system so you feel less. SSRI's such as paxil, effexor and the like, address the PROBLEM which is a chemical imbalance. They have no sedative effect, they are not addictive or habit forming, and they are not a narcotic. They quite simply aim to fix the chemical imbalance that is causing the problem. They won't work for everyone but they do for millions every day. When you first goto the doctor Quit, he will want to do some bloodwork to rule out a thyroid problem. He will also do a catacholomine test and extensive urine analysis. He'll check to make sure you don't have adrenal problems etc. Once/if he rules out those types of things, he'll most likely start to talk to you about your medication options, at the top of which will be the SSRI's and similar drugs that work for so many by addressing the likely culprit, a serotonin imbalance in the brain. If he tells you that Xanax and other similar sedating drugs are a long term treatment option before exhausting ALL other med options first, RUN as fast as you can out of that office and find a new doctor. Good luck!! |

Oops did I post these in the wrong anxiety thread?
Well actually its the right thread, in that I wanted to debunk the innaccurate info about meds. But wrong in that I addressed Quiet. Hopefully he'll see the messages. Good luck to you too Roger. Drop me an Email anytime. |

We had simliar experiences. I went through something like this for about 4 months (3 years ago). It just happened one day out of the blue. I was sitting at my computer and all of a sudden, i felt like i couldn't breathe...than as it progressed, I started to shake a little, followed by total nausea. Needless to say, i was scared shitless. I really thought that was it.....and i was dead. I laided on the floor and called my girl in who was in the other room. We went to the doctor, and ofcourse, they found nothing wrong. Said i was very healthy. The worst thing was that I didn't understand what was happening to me, and know one else knew either. They talked about stress, but i'm quite active physically and i wasn't under any severe pressure at the time. I surf pretty much daily (waves), and workout quite a bit. From then on, every fucking day i was feeling like shit. Faint, nausea, etc. I kept going back to the doctors, couldn't eat, felt sick constantly. You know what it really felt like? It felt like my brain and my body were separated. It sounds weird, but i don't no any other way to explain it. They wanted to give me drugs, but i wasn't about to take that shit...no way. Last thing on earth that i needed to do was cover this up and hide the real cause. There was a conflict somewhere inside that i wanted to find myself. Hell, i HAD to find it. After about the 3rd month, i woke up one day and decided i was seriously "sick of being sick." Eventually i got over it after making that decision. Though it certainly left a scar and something i will never forget. The experience cannot be compared to anything else out there. It was one of the worst things i ever went through. I still have no idea what was wrong, but i wrote it off as a panic attack after doing some research. Few things to consider. - Do NOT take drugs. It will only hide the true issue, and you won't heal. - Realise that this is your bodies way of telling you that it needs a change. Weather it's more exercise, etc. - When you reached your limit/patience, and your truly "sick of being sick," (you'll know when that happens) just go about your life and tell yourself, "im done with this shit." Don't be scared of it and do not cater to it. Just go about your day and do what you do normally, (with ofcourse adding some healthy changes.) It is tough, but it's all about mind over matter. What i found it to be, beside physical, it's a lot of the mind and body being out of sync. Just gotta bring it back together. Roger, hit me anytime. |

I also have an anxiety disorder that I need to get checked out. When my dad died, earlier this year it hit me really bad, I couldn't get on the web for weeks, pissed off some customers..I'm sure some of you remember.
I guess I've been stalling to see a doc (was diagnosed by my marriage counsellor a few years ago), I get anxiety about taking any pills..hehe..a little bit of paranoia maybe.

I took Paxil and Zoloft for a few years, it helped. What really got me over the hump was vigorous and frequent exercise (BJJ) and a drastic decrease in how much Marijuana I smoke. In fact I don't smoke at all now, every time I try it's an instant panic attack.
Think of it as a biological rather than a mental problem Roger, because that's what it is, and a doctor can certainly fix you up. I highly recommend the exercise as well. |

Wow!!!
Damn stress, a tornado hit my grandma's house yrs ago...an F5! Did some major damage and killed alot of people and animals, long story short...My family wasn't home ( aunt lived next door to grandma) they weren't going to let anyone in the "hit" area, so my family went to stay with other family members. Then 30 mins later, they said if ur addy on your DL matches the addy's hit, you can run in for 30 mins, get what you can and get out. The blood hound's were still out looking for dead people, My Grandma was poor growing up and did well through the years, so I ran in and found all her stashed $$ as I use to live with her and I knew where it was. Scared me to death, it smelled awful and I didn't want to stubble on any dead bodies!!! 5 yrs go by, no tornado's...then 1 morning I wake to sirens going off at 8 am! PANIC ATTACK hell, from there on! #1. Paxil helps like no other, but the side effects are horrible, if you run out of meds.! #2. Xanax is a blessing, but don't abuse it!!! #3. I paid big $$ to go through a program, just when it started to work, my Doctor said get on Paxil now ( I was having a hard time working, scared to leave the house) so I did, and you can't fight something that doesn't happen, due to the meds. working! I'am so surprised I didn't do something insane, as I hated to be stuck in traffic! Good Luck! Take walks and learn to really relax, like a rubber band and breath deep! BTW: Nice metting you in Atlanta babe!!! xoxox ~LL |

To all you dumb mother fuckers that think drugs are the solution are dead wrong.
You underling generations are fucking retarded thinking that Drugs solve problems. Hey I got a novel idea, its called fucking life and health and Anxiety is just one of things that happens. Guess what the cure is you dipshits. EXCERSISE. EAT WELL. THEY GO AWAY! Fucking morons. So Roger... Start excersising, get a good diet, get fresh air often. Cut out the coffee or slow it down. Its a god damn miracle I tell really. I suffered Anxiety Attacks and changed my diet, and excersised and you know I live a hi stress life. Guess what... No More Anxiety Attacks. Fuck that heart racing shit and a numb mind feeling with dizzyness wondering if ya gonna die all of a sudden. Ya just need a good diet, rest and excersise. They will stop. Trust meh! The only thing ya might consider doing is going to your doctor and getting a check up make sure nothing is really wrong but do not take his nutso drugs if nothing serious is wrong, like bad Blood Sugar or what not.
