Too many doctors are mis-prescribing anti-depressants for anxiety needs.

xanax is not for depression, it is strictly for anti-anxiety.
anxiety is the cause of panic attacks not depression.

All paxil will do for a person with panic attacks is screw up the equilibrium of chemicals that is more than likely fine to begin with.

Im not a big fan of the Paxil, Zoloft, Prozac boom.
Its all do to marketing of these coporations, and has little to do with the need of the patient. Really sad.

ok im done with my soap box.
I almost feel like im back in the public health field again.
something i never want to go back to, but it just comes out sometimes
No disrespect intended, but that information is SO wrong it is frightening. Paxil is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, and it has a REMARKABLE effect in the treatment of anxiety.

Many of the treatments that are effective for depression also happen to work for anxiety. The reason for this is NOT because doctors are just prescribing depression meds for anxiety. The reason is because in many many instances, the same chemical imbalances that cause depression also cause anxiety. Sometimes one, sometimes the other, or sometimes both.

Seretonin has been proven beyond any shadow of doubt to be a major player in the role of anxiety, and therefore is why many of the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI's) are tremendously effective in treating anxiety.

Also, Paxil is MARKETED as effective for social phobia/anxiety and that is true, but that is just a marketing gimmick. Paxil is an SSRI as is prozac and so many others. You are right that SmithKline is a tricky marketing company and they zero'd in on the social anxiety angle because it is a lucrative market.

But Paxil is NOT only for anxiety of the social phobia kind, that is simply a clever marketing angle. Paxil is a MIRACLE worker for Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD).

Many, MANY depression medications are also effective anxiety medications, and that is because of the chemical processes in the brain that makes this an undisputable fact.

Quiet, see a doctor, and drop me an email if you'd like. I can share a wealth of information with you.

Best of luck and hang in there.
