Well said, Michael. You are the only person who your pet looks to for shelter, food, and companionship, and it hurts like hell when you've done all you can but you can't make them feel better.

***********

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

So sorry for your loss...

I was on holiday last June in Florida and on the last day of my holiday my cat died. It was my mums cat but he was 13, had him since I was 9 years old. He lived with me, coz I bought my mums house from her and she moved but the cat wouldn't settle in her new place so he came back to live with me.

He had two tumors in his anal glands and it was gonna be more cruel to treat him that it would be to put him down. After a helluva lot of tears my mum finally agreed. Thankfully I wasn't there to see it all or I think I'd have been a wreck too.

My mum swore she would never get another cat but she has one now and she loves it just the same she did the old one. This one stays at her house tho and I still have my Labrador to keep me happy. Maybe in time you'll get another cat. I hope you feel better soon.

Sorry for your loss TA.

My dog Sully is 17 now, and I know it's only a matter of time for him now.

Not looking forward to being without him, he's been a constant friend and companion to me since he was 5 1/2 weeks old.

I'm so sorry for your loss, it can be really devastating when you lose a furry friend, and he seemed like a cool cat.

I hope to not sound insensitive, but consider (after a reasonable mourning period) getting a new little kitten, it really helps. Especially if you only had one cat, to me a house isn't a home without a cat or dog.

Either way, I hope you feel better soon.

I had a Tabby like that as a kid, Tiger was my favorite cat. When I had that cat it was the only time I'd be up for school...cause like an alarm clock he would wake me up....by either biting my big toe or my nose(playfully). When you mentioned the crying all night it gave me a flash back.....my cat did the same it was like he was saying Good Bye

No ... YOUR life obviously does. Our lives would be crushed if our cats were harmed fatally.

I suppose everyone is different... but if you have a trophy dog (I assume so, since you'd not be that bothered if it died), then you've got a dog for the wrong reasons.

Why ??

Some parents haven't got a clue how to bring up kids properly anyway, so why would it insult them ?

I am trying to see the rationale for crying over an animal. As this thread has noted, some people see pets as children rather than the animal that they are. I own cats also but I would not cry knowing that cats do not have the human life expectancy anyways

Those of us that do would be insulted, although I can see why your parents might put you on the same level as a cat.

You'll never understand. The new puppy you got you wouldn't cry or be at least a bit up-set he had gotten killed last night?

Would I be bummed? Of course. Would I ever put him on the same level as one of my kids? Not a chance.

Yeah, that's what my friend said too.

To this day, I've yet to see a human give birth to an animal. Until then, you can not compare the love of a mother and child to that of a pet.

Yes why wouldn't they? I have a friend who in the past year lost both of his dogs. He had them since they were puppies and they both died at the age of 16. Who would not cry after loving an animal after 16 years? When you love a pet and see it every day, you make a special bond. Not everyone makes that bond, but plenty of us do. I have two dogs that I love very much. They are my babies and I would cry if they passed away. Animals give you love and loyalty. If she is upset by the loss of her cat, then leave her alone. She has every right to cry at her loss.

Putting a fucking cat on the same level as a child is an insult to parents.

A lot of children are adopted, so they should not be loved like a child that a parent gave birth too? You don't have to give birth to a child or a pet to love them. I have two dogs. I take them the vet, I take them to the dog park, I watch them play at the park, and yes they are attending a school for training. So I do go to their school functions. Animals are more then just a pet to many people, they are family. Not everyone feels like that, but you should not knock another person who does.

My condolences. I feel your loss. Me and my wife can't have kids so my wife would call our dog (Cuca) her daughter. When we had to put her down my wife cried for weeks. I didn't cry, I hardly cry when a human I know dies, but I had a great sense of loss and was very depressed for a while.
