Car lovers... what you think about the Mini Cooper S?

i gotta change my car sooner or later and i was considering this one, i will test drive an used one next saturday.... does anybody own one? is she a bitch and you always gotta take her to the mechanic or you just put gaz and oil and you're fine? i hate sporty cars that you need to pay lots of attention to... i regret selling my Subaru Impreza WRX Turbo...that one was like a tank, NEVER had a problem with it....

thanks!

My wife has one, and I gotta admit, it's an absolute blast to drive; light, powerful, agile. Definitely get the S (supercharged), and get the 6 speed manual. And, make sure you get the 17" rims; definitely worth it.

As far as maintenance goes, we've done one thing in the past 13 months of owning; an oil change. First change is at 16,000 kms, and then 25K thereafter. It's been bulletproof.

It's great fun to drive if you want a toy. As far as an everyday drive - it would suit you fine if you were a female hairdresser.

We have a Mini Cooper and have been talking about trading it in for an S model. Right now, we're just trying to find the right one...either Black or Silver.

The standard version is fun to drive, but the S variant is a completely different little animal. Hopefully we can track one down for the summer.

Another thing to add as that (at least in my area) these cars hold their value. I've seen year old models getting ORIGINAL sticker price at dealerships and private owners.

i personally think they are kind of ugly looking, but my buddy got one for his wife probably about a year ago, and he hasn't mentioned any problems with it to me.

they're quick little cars if you like autocrossing.

although, honestly, i find them a bit impractical. last time i had to take a ride in one, the seat was all the way back and i still could have used a bit more room though. i'm a tall guy, around 6'2", but if i needed to drive one of those with anything but one grocery bag in the backseat, it wouldn't be possible.

they only have a curb weigh of 2700 lbs though.

that's a pretty good power to weight ratio actually. makes them pretty swift.

what do you drive that is so amazingly fast?

1971 Chevelle
1970 Camaro
1977 Camaro Z/28
1976 Corvette Stingray

None under 350 horsepower at the crank.

In my garage, ready to go into a 1974 Camaro is a 383 cid engine that puts out just under 550hp at the crank at 6600 RPM and can still run pump gas - naturally aspirated, and that's before the 200 shot of nitrous.

schneemann: do the math...

'74 Camaro: 550hp from 383 cid = 1.43 hp/inch
'07 Mini S: 175hp from 100 cid = 1.75 hp/inch

i am confident i could beat your chevelle, both your camaros, and your stingray. maybe not the 74 camaro with the new engine you're putting in it. not yet at least.

got any drag times for these?

That "math" only matters if you're a benchracing nerd who thinks that an additional 2/10 of a horsepower per cid is something to brag about. What matters is who gets to the finish line first.

I doubt you could have stood a chance against either Camaro.
The 70 had 495 at the crank, for one thing.

Season just started. Hopefully I'll get a few trips down to MIR and maybe even Maple Grove this year. I'm concentrating on the 74 at the moment but want it ready by the Camaro Nationals in June. I'll post times when I get em.

well, here is my line of reasoning with this.

my evo has just a shade under 300 horsepower at the crank stock. i've added a decent bit of horsepower recently, and with the all wheel drive, i don't do anything at the line but get up and move.

i am planning on getting out on the drag strip soon here in pittsburgh, and getting some hard numbers. i am shooting for low 12's on street tires. by the end of the season i want to be in the mid 11's. do you run rear slicks on your cars?

that being said, if you can beat me in a straight line, i will add more horsepower and try again ;)

THAT being said, post some pictures, the 1971 chevelle is a sexy car.

here is me last sunday at the autocross:

Yeah, good editing. I said if you have to modify a car to get only 210 horsepower, that's pathetic.

Here's some history. In 1976, thanks to US automakers' inability to cope with rising emission standards, they began choking the hell out of their cars to meet the standards. Consequently, the 1976 Corvette L-82 made only 210 horsepower.

So, if someone needs to MODIFY a brand new car in order to get as much power as a 30 year old, archaic, carbureted turd, THAT is pathetic.

One thing a lot of people don't realize is that actual track times are vastly different than the benchracing times you hear. I had a 2000 Mustang GT that was extensively modified. It never went better than 14.0 on the track, but the trap speed was 126. As fast as I was at the end of the track, I should have been running 12s, but I am TERRIBLE with a stick shift. My 100ft times were terrible.

I doubt you'll make it near low 12s unless you have a sick reaction time and great traction, even if you managed to get about 300hp to the tires.

At any rate, good luck. I'll post here when I'm going to Maple Grove, maybe you can meet me. My friend owns a chassis shop right up the road. He's gonna be doing the back half and the cage and I'll run it at test & tune when we're done.

Somebody better hit up AMG, RUF, BRABUS, the M department at BMW, SVT, SRT, and so on.

Shneemann thinks they are Pathetic.

traction is not an issue with the all wheel drive. i couldn't spin tire if wanted too. i just use the factory launch limiter to build boost at the line, then dump the clutch and am on my way.

the reason i am aiming for low 12's, is that i did a 13.8@100 last year at the strip, with my old 2005 evo, and i couldn't drive for shit at the time. the 2006 i picked up in january has a good deal more horsepower, and much better boost response due to mitsubishi's addition of a computer controlled adjustable intake cam. well, that and the extra goodies i have added to the car after picking it up a few months ago ;)

good drivers have gone 12.8 with a stock 2006 evo, so i am thinking it is within the realm of possibility for my to go 12.3 - 12.4 with a few practice runs.

i just gotta get a day when the the strip isn't closed due to rain, and i don't an autocross the same time the drags are open.

where is maple grove at?

god i love race season.

You clearly have a major reading comprehension issue. AMG, RUF, etc. are starting with cars that already have more than 210 horsepower.

Not at all, I can find multiple examples from those After Market Companies that have modified cars from less than 210 horsepower.

You on the other hand, keep putting foot in mouth. It's a good look for you.

the mini isn't made to be fast in a straight line though. it is made for the corners.

i've seen mini's kick some serious fucking ass at the track and on the autocross course.

it may only have 210 horsepower in that particular trim, but with a low curb weight, and incredible suspension, take it to the twisties and it will dust muscle cars like they are sitting still.

really it's kind of an apples to oranges thing.

And yet most of the ones you listed don't do that, and in cases where they do, its fucking pathetic.

Let's see, which is cooler, the SVT Lightning or the SVT Ford Focus? What do you get out of an SVT Focus? 170 horsepower? For $17,995? That's not cool, its borderline retarded.

Jesus Christ, did someone come into a Mini thread bragging about dropping big blocks into 70s pony cars?

Oh and for the record, the new Mini is a disgrace to the original
