Post the question on the Rennlist 993 board. There are a couple of actual Porsche mechanics that hang out there.

so why wouldn't the car start? If it was the tranny, the car would run fine until you put it into gear.

If it was the tranny you'd expect to feel/hear the problem not just notice a loss of power. I'm betting engine damage.

Did it immediately lose power and die? Depending on the symptom at that exact moment, the timing chain could have skipped a tooth or broke all together. If this occurred, depending on the valve to piston clearance, you may have some serious engine damage.

It's really impossible to know for sure, but likely it's not the transmission.

What you've done is caused the engine to severly over rev, as if you put in the clutch and just stood on the gas. Did you stuff in the clutch as soon as you realized what happened? The type of damage can vary, but it's not looking like Monday will be a great day for you.

If the chain broke, it wouldn't turn over at all when he tried to start it.

Possible shot tranny but more likely engine damage. If you would lose a gear you would deff. be able to feel that.

When you hit that low gear, revs surely went past what the engine can take. Worst case, bottom end damage (crank, or piston/cylinder) best case, piston hit valve and bent it.

What ever the case, it will be costly. Let us know how it turns out.

Yeah, it's engine damage. Hopefully in the top end, but hard to know for sure. Shitty deal for you.

Is it a TT? Could just be an intercooler hose popped... I had that happen a lot on my Supra. That is some pretty wishful thinking though.

You ran too much RPM, you may have damaged one or more of the valves! Not for sure if that year came with rev limited but slamming the car at speed into 2nd gear could do it.

A bent valve could cause compression loss, and that would be consistant with your power loss.

Good luck! I hope you get it fixed!

A rev limited will make no difference what so ever if you shift in to too low of a gear. It only stops the engine from revving passed the limit.

I would totaly disregard anything said in this thread. There are too many variables to diagnose the problem. I did pretty much the same thing once in a 1969 Mustang, and everyone swore I blew the engine. All that happened is the rotor inside of the distrubutor broke. For $8 I was running again. Being that your car is a 95 it probably doesnt even have a distributor, I've never worked on a Porsche so I wouldnt know. Which is why you dont see me posting a diagnosis here. It could be alot of different things gone wrong.

Keep your fingers crossed and wait for the mechanic to call you.

The 993 has a non interference motor. It is very difficult to bend a valve.

Can you give some more details? What was the actual sound? was it a metal clang? what do you mean by pop? did you hear any metal clanking sounds after?

Where you able to shift into other gears? When you were turning over the engine after it stopped can you describe the sound? did it sound like the normal cranking that it always does?

I used to work as a German repair specialist and might be able to help

The first thing you need to do is a "compression test" on all the cylinders.

I once did a 2nd-1st shift instead of into 3rd... Tranny was moving over to the left under hard acceleration and I kept grinding, so I tried to aim a little bit to the left when doing the 3 shift, and let the clutch out in 1st at 70mph.... tach spiked to the bottom and the back end lit up.

Good times.

Yes, a rev limiter will stop the engine from revving too high of it's own power. In this particular case, the engine is not causing the revs but the high speed of the wheels being transfered back to the engine throught he low gear. The engine can not possibly restrict this type of action.

Imagine if you had a wheel on an axle connected directly to an engine. Now say this engine can only rev at 500RPM and no faster. If you grab the wheel and spin it faster than 500RPM, you will force the engine to rev higher.

on highway driving 60mph ish---dowshift 6th to 5th then meant to hit 4 but went into 2---i heard something pop---car drove but lose ton of power---imediatley pulled over---car wouldnt start---felt like not enough juice to start---clutch worked fine when driving after and when trying to start...

PLEASE DONT GIVE ME OPINION UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT!!!! THANKS....
Sounds like a head gasket or it could have sucked in a valve, or opposing cylinders that were top dead center at that time could have wacked the top of the valve and bent the stem leaving it partially open.
I dont know if its a turbo, but you could have done something to that from the over rev. It doesnt sound good though.
I hope it's nothing big and costly.
Cheers,
Duke

i hate the rev limiter. Mine kicks in at 6800 rpm's despite having roughly 500 hp. But i know the motor can do 8000 rpms. It kinda sucks because you only have a few thousand rpms to play with when torquing it up. But whats cool is the top speed isnt goverened. I had it to 193 mph for a duration of about 8 or so miles. that was pretty intense. I might add a chip and get new intercoolers. That should push it over the 600hp mark. Great car though.

didn't you say that there's just no power to get started? Wouldnt' that indicate something electrically rather than all these mechanical problems everyone is addressing?

If that's the case, I like something blown electrically rathern than mechanical. I had a f'd up alternator due to a problem like this....

wish for the best, man.

it's called moneyshift... you miss shifted by going to lower gear which made rpm go over the limit.... your engine is done
