Actual Causes of Preventable Deaths

In 2000 well over a third of all deaths in the United States could be attributed to a limited number of largely preventable behaviors and exposures--tobacco use (smoking), poor diet and physical inactivity and alcohol consumption.

Actual Causes of Death
The leading causes of death in 2000 from behavioral causes with the number and percentages of deaths were as follows:

Tobacco accounting for 435,000 deaths or 18.1% of total deaths in the US.

Poor diet and physical inactivity accounting for 365,000 deaths or 15.2% of total deaths in the US.
These are the corrected values from the often cited originally published and later corrected values of 400,000 and 16.6%.

Alcohol consumption accounting for 85,000 deaths or 3.5% of the total deaths in the US.

Microbial agents accounting for 75,000 or 3.1% of the total deaths in the US.

Toxic agents accounting for 55,000 or 2.3% of the total deaths in the US.

Motor vehicle crashes accounting for 43,000 or 1.8% of the total deaths in the US.

Incidents involving firearms accounting for 29,000 or 1.2% of the total deaths in the US.

Sexual behaviors accounting for 20,000 or 0.8% of the total deaths in the US.

Illicit use of drugs accounting for 17,000 or 0.7% of the total deaths in the US.

You gone stupid as well Jon??

The issue is violent offenses against others with weapons - nothing else.

Name one USEFUL thing a handgun does that's on a par with the useful things a car can do. You can't. So your example is meaningless. Still, I'm inclined to stop driving anyway.

Definitely ... still, it's a meaningless point unless you can describe even one useful thing you can do with a handgun. Killing people doesn't count. And the notion of "self-defense" is laughable.

Quote:
Our right to own guns is why we have our freedom...
What freedom? Do you think you're going to hold off the cops or the gangbangers? You ever been in a firefight? Know anyone who's been shot? I do. I think if you investigate you'll find that when guns are kept in the home for "self-defense'" they end up shooting the good guys a lot more often than the bad guys.

Quote:
When they take our guns away they will also take our freedom
It'll never happen. There are already over 200,000,000 guns in the USA. They'll never get that cat back in the bag. We have about 30,000 gun deaths in the USA every year. You know how many they have in England? Less than 20 -- for 2005 I think it was 14. FOURTEEN against 30,000. What's left to talk about?

I used to think you were an idiot before, now with your recent posts you have confirmend it for me.

The arguement is that having a strict gun control will reduce the deaths caused by FIRE ARMS. So why the hell are you comparing Fire Arm Deaths to others? You're comparing Apples to Elephants.

You = RETARD.

Yes you and your bubba friends and your 22s will stop the government if they decide to take away your freedom? Our army as tanks, missiles and shit and you and your inbred butt buddies are going to stop them? This isn't 1807. The South tried to fight the government 140 years ago. How'd that turn out? They lost last time I checked.

Answer this wise guy.

I have a right to bear AMRS. It doesn't say GUNS it says AMRS. Isn't a tank ARMS? Isn't a rpg ARMS? Isn't a nuclear weapon ARMS? How come I can't have those? It's my right. At least according to the way you and your gun freaks buddies interpret the constitution. So please explain why the NRA isn't on top of this? The government is infringing on my right to bear arms if I'm not allowed to own a fully operation tank. if the premise of the right to ear arms is too keep the government in check. We have a better chance at that if we were allowed to own tanks and shit. So come on explain.

You really don't understand do you? People are calling for gun control because they believe it will reduce the number of deaths caused by guns. This isn't just about people getting killed, this is about people getting killed by GUNS, not Cars, not Tabacco, not Lions, it's about trying to reduce deaths caused by

Guns being the apples and fast food, tabacco and alchol being the elephants...

Strick control on fast food, tabacco and alcohol will save more live then strict control

By the way, in states that have passed conceled weapons laws, crime has went down since the laws where passed... Criminals are less likely to attack someone who might be carrying a gun!

If people want to smoke, knife themselves or drink acid - who cares? It's about, as you said, gun control - the reasons are obvious. Idiots can't be trusted - with anything - and the "public" are idiots.

We have the right to bear arms. That is what our country was built on. We should have gun laws, but never take away our right to bear arms.

Jesus you keep missing the point. Im not saying having strict gun control WILL reduce deaths by fire arms....Im saying THAT is the arguement. No one is discussing reducing the overall death rate in the US...they are debating trying to reduce the death rate due to gunshot...so you comparing death by guns to death by car is moronic.

For your sake I hope you are a good designer

Why can't I own a fully operation tank? Last time I checked it's considered ARMS. So aren't my rights being violated?

because in England and Japan, 2 countries who combined population is 2/3 of the US had only about 100 TOTAL gun deaths last year. So I think statistic prove you wrong.

Also in the 1870's thru 1890's you could openly carry a gun in Dodge City without a licence. What was the murder rate then compared to now? HIGHER. Now why is that if MORE guns makes us safer?

Once again statistics prove me right. All you have is an opinion.

That might be true at first, but if they kept destroying weapons then eventually your average thug wouldn't have a gun. If you look at countries that don't allow citizens to own firearms, you'll see a lot lower rate of gun crimes.

I think guns are fun, and I own a Glock 19, but I don't honestly believe owning a gun makes me any safer.

Well using that logic rape laws, murder laws and child molestation laws are stupid and those things should be legal because after all rapists don't obey they law so why have it. Why should we have laws against child molestation? Pedos don't obey those laws so they are useless. Why is bank robbery illegal? Bank robbers just disregard the law anyways.

Helpless? I've never owned a gun and never will. Come fuck with me. I don't need a gun to not only kill you and make it very painful. You'll WISH I had a gun. Try to break into my house and assuming my pitbull doesn't kill you then my bashing your brains in with a bat so you spend the rest of your life in the retard home will do the trick.

Dismissing the obvious - that you are just dumb...

Personally I don't give a flying fuck if you shoot each other to death, but can ya quit talking about it like it's something special?

More people died in the US fuckup in Iraq in the last few days then ever were killed in the US shootings. More people got a bullet in the brain and tortured in Chile than ever were killed on 9/11 and in US gun shootings - all supported and trained in torture by your stupid deviant government.

Instead of whining and moaning about your goddamned "rights" and other nations - ya may have some consideration for those who actually suffered in killings in Virginia and Iraq - and apologize for all the fuckups worldwide in which your govt played a role - including Chile, Nicaragua, Guatamala ad nausea...
