WARNING [biz thread]
When is it time to get your own office? At what point revenue and time wise do you decide to get a workspace outside of your own house?
Do you figure it out by distractions, by income generated or what is the special formula? |

agreed. Unless you have kids or a nagging gf I would go that route as well. If your living by yourself, then you should be fine for a while.

Brad I've been thinking the same thing. I have the opportunity to rent the office space that I currently work part time at with my friend doing computer tech support at the end of May. $300/month rent and no utilities makes it very tempting. If I can get him to throw in some of the desks we have I just might do it.
Gotta talk with my accountant as far as hiring an employee and see what taxes I will have to pay on their wages etc, or if I can just hire them as a contract worker to avoid those taxes. |

Employees can work from their homes as well. I would say it is more of a personal decision, which can probably be influenced by the volume of your workload and responsabilities. If you are running several projects at the same time and feel the need to be on top of everyone and everything, then I think it would be a good idea to open up an office.

employees at home are not really a good thing though, as your paying them a fixed wage and dont know if they are working to their full potential, what most companies do is only let them work from home once they know they are loyal enough. You would be gambling on their work rate if you let an employee work for you from home.
better to contract so if you do feel they are slow you can get rid of them much easier and dont have to go down the proper channels of play.

If I could find somewhere close by it would be ideal, but it's unlikely as I'm in an outer fringe suburb. I also like being able to walk out of the home office for 2 minutes and say hello to my wife and daughter (even though officially I don't have to until 6pm!)

I don't have an office yet, but I'd get one when I need some 2-3 guys work for me on-site. For me, they can be programmers/designers.
It doesn't depend on revenue but requirements. I earn quite good and can afford an office but currently I don't actually need one so I am not getting it.

If you work out of your own home you are an unprofessional idiot... where you going to interview prospective employees? Your kitchen? Where are you going to have meetings with clients? Your garage?
Any self respecting business owner has an office plain and simple. People that work at home obvious are unprofessional or can't afford office space |
