Fact: We will all die Friday 13th, 2036

HAPPY FRIDAY THE 13TH you have exactly 29 YEARS TO LIVE.

Apophis is a near earth asteroid that will most likely impact the Earth on Friday 13th in April 2036. It is the only "NEO" that has been named, and named appropriately. Apophis means "The Destroyer" in Greek.

Scientists are so concerned about this particular asteroid that they recently are offering $50000 USD in a contest to see the best plan to "tag" the asteroid with a probe for tracking.

Beware the Destroyer who continues to dominate the news

More about your death...

(99942) Apophis (previously known by its provisional designation 2004 MN4) is a near-Earth asteroid that caused a brief period of concern in December 2004 because initial observations indicated a relatively large probability that it would strike the Earth in 2029. Additional observations provided improved predictions that eliminated the possibility of an impact on Earth or the Moon in 2029. However there remained a possibility that during the 2029 close encounter with Earth, Apophis would pass through a "gravitational keyhole", a precise region in space no more than about 400 meters across, that would set up a future impact on April 13, 2036. This possibility kept the asteroid at Level 1 on the Torino impact hazard scale until August 2006.

Additional observations of the trajectory of Apophis revealed the "keyhole" would likely be missed and on August 5, 2006, Apophis was lowered to a Level 0 on the Torino Scale. As of October 19, 2006 the impact probability for April 13, 2036 is estimated at 1 in 45,000. An additional impact date in 2037 has been identified, however the impact probability for that encounter is 1 in 12.3 million.

Despite the fact that there is no longer any significant probability of an Earth impact, the Planetary Society is offering a $50,000 prize for the best plan to put a tracking device on or near the asteroid.[1]

Yes, to me christians make the biggest offense to their God they can, by saying this isn't paradise. You were given life, only to wish and dream for... something better?

Your God did all this brainstorming, made this place, tossed his son down, and people still want something more. Blasphemy!

It is - actually Dec 21st 2012 - which is also the end of the I Ching as well as the Aztec and Mayan calenders

Its also the centric date that the earth will travel through the exact center of the Milky Way Galaxies' black hole gravitational field - leading some scientists to predict a huge shift in the earths crust and rotation - leading to destruction of the tectonic plate structure and complete annihilation of all life on earth - this happens every 28,000 years and seems to explain some previously unexplained shifts in the earths structure that geologists had been wrestling with for years - fortunately I'll be dead by then but sure would have been interesting to watch

pfft... the trajectory of this thing has probably been miscalculated, or the numbers are so uncertain that Earth is in a tiny fraction of the possible trajectory spread.

I wouldn't buy the suicide pills just yet ;)

You guys do realise that on average about 50 of these a year get announced?

This one has been "named" and there are teams of scientists offering money and trying to figure out how to track it years before its "close encounter". You dont do that for just ANY near earth object. Look at Google news this thing has been in the news since 2004, thats 3 straight years. Matter of fact this deserves more attention, research and focus than fucking "global warming".

Actually it is the opposite when compared to most state lotteries? you actually have a better chance of getting hit by an asteroid than winning the lottery.

The Planetary Society is offering a $50,000 prize for the best plan to reach out an put a tracking beacon on near-Earth asteroid Apophis (AKA 2004 MN4). Apophis is approximately 400 metres across, and it?s expected to pass very close to the Earth in 2029. And on that pass, it could receive a gravitational bump to its orbit that could make it even more dangerous in 2036. With better tracking, scientists will have a much better idea if Apophis really is a risk to Earth. The competition ends August 31, 2007.
