Actually the Romans of that era used to execute criminals on a STAKE, NOT a cross. The cross part of the story evolved later. Wouldn't THAT throw a monkeywrench into religion Iconography. The symbol of the cross was yet another religious artifact that was around and in use thousands of years before the birth of christ. It was used in ancient Egypt, the symbol for venus is a circle and a cross, Saturn was a cross and a ram's horn. They took the symbolism of dying on the cross from the backgroudn of many other religions and as they have done with many of the ceremonies/symbols surrounding christianity, they've hacked them from pagan beliefs and jammed them into their own needs. (In fact most often the cross was used in ancient religions as a PHALLIC symbol, funny that, no?)

Jesus was a true historical figure who made an impact on many religions (even the Muslum religion sees Jesus as a prophet). However, like playing telephone, over the years the story changed and changed and became more and more glorified until suddenly he wasn't just a man, he was all these other things too. None of the scriptures in the bible were written exactly contemporary with Jesus's life... in fact the vast majority were written after Jesus was already dead and many years had passed. I'm sure there's NO embellishment there (like there is in every single set of religious texts since time immemmorial... religion IS ABOUT embellishment). There is lots of historical evidence that says that Jesus was a real man, and I'm sure no man since has left such an impact on millenia of people who followed him. He was still a man though after all. :) |
