Some programs are fucking you with their rss feeds!!

I notice several rss feeds out there where the affiliate link is missing.

There's a couple of ways these programs are sneaking leaks without your affiliate id.

Example one.
With wordpress & feedwordpress, when you add the feed, it also includes a link in the blogroll as well as the posts.

While the posts may all be fine, the link in the blogroll is missing the affiliate id.

Example 2.
Some of these programs will only have your affiliate id in the links in the post itself while the permalinks to original post does not contain your id. so if you get SE traffic to the entry & user clicks title, it goes to sponsor without your ref code.

No, because it may not be intentional.
I will contact the programs directly to advise them of the issue & allow them to correct it.

I'm sure the webmasters are capable of checking their blogs & finding out on their own.

Whether it is intentional or a simple mistake I don't know, so I am not naming anyone, YET.

I will contact the programs I found with these errors & let them know.
If they don't fix it, then I will post names

Explain to me what does it matter if its intentional or not in this case? Either way they messed up and i think its only fair if you let people know so they can do something about it.

What are you worried about? A sponsor blacklisting you because you pointed out a flaw?

I told them where to look in the examples I gave.

If you're using feedwordpress to add feeds, then there's links in blogroll in addition to the blog posts.. Some of those links do not carry an affiliate code

In the other example, the entry titles/permalinks that are linked to the original post on sponsors blog, some of these do not contain affiliate id.

Now, with the 2nd example, bloggers have to have chosen option to have permalink point to original website, otherwise it's linked to their own site

I think this is exactly what I noticed today. In the syndicated posts, the link code carries over fine, but when I click via the "Contributors" category and got the actual blog that the post came from, it doesn't seem to carry the link code over...either in the blog itself or the individual links.

Yep.. that's exactly it.

Also, depending on if you have permalink pointed to them or to your own site, but some sponsors feeds don't have aff id in the permalink.

(Permalink would be post title for those who are new to blogs)

I usually set the permalinks to post to my own site, so I haven't noticed it not carrying aff id in the permalink.

I just noticed it in the Contributors links today and it was on a RSS fed blog that I don't give a lot of attention to. It was glaring in mainly two sponsor RSS feeds. And honestly, I think it is more ignorance than intention. I actually don't think it's malicious.

If you would like to compare what we've noticed on this, my ICQ is in sig.

Do you use sponsor RSS feeds? If you have them set to display the source site under "contributors" or something similar, click through under that category and see if your affiliate code passes on in the posts on that blog. It's that simple.

erm there is an easy fix

1. get rid of the blogroll shit
2. permalinks that go to YOUR site - makes more sense to have more pages online....

That's why I have posted this URL on GFY about a month ago: http://www.fhgstore.com/services.html - our script cares to keep the affiliate feeds on the sponsored feeds and blogs. Some big affiliate programs already use it to provide the high quality feeds to their webmasters.

this is why permalinks should ALWAYS be pointing to your own site

and also why I also remove the contributors blogroll on the blog

I will actually reinforce this one more time

if you are using feedwordpress, remove the contributors from the blogroll, it is a big hassle and doesn't work properly with feedwordpress most of the time

these are HUGE reasons I stopped using feedwordpress and went full time using rsstoblog

hum i noticed in the past when i did remove them or made them invisible for some reason the feeds disappear as well. So you cant do no more rss updates unless you turn them back to visible or re add the feed . Im going to look into rsstoblog thanks

Click this link and you'll see that the affiliate ID (in this example it's yourWEGID) tracks through to EVERYTHING on our blog (cams, links, pics, etc).

We make sure our webmasters get credit!

WordPress added that contributors section recently, correct me if I'm wrong ...has nothing to do with the sponsor not tracking properly. Remove the contributors section if its not tracking. Seems like the easiest workaround at this time.

If they add something, we can do our best to create an added tracking method for it, and of course we'll be looking into this. OCCash tracks ALL JOINS. I hand-write all the blog posts.. lmk if any of you have any questions or suggestions.

This is caused by a couple possible problems:

1. The affiliate code is passed during the load of the sponsor page, but the sponsor's page template cancels out the legitimate affiliate number or adds a different one when the surfer moves into the tour from the template.

2. The join page script cancels the legitimate referal number or sets a new affiliate number.

If the number is cancelled, someone probably doesn't know what they are doing. At least that is a good excuse.

If a different affiliate number is written, it is either a cut and paste error or intentional.

If it is a signup page that is doing this, I think that is pretty obvious.

Also, it doesn't matter if you are feeding the site through contributor, blogroll links, or coding the pages... the root cause is bad handling on the sponsor end - one way or another.

Why post without sponsor names? Because if you are a professional, you should be looking after your business and make decisions based on facts and observations.

I found these same RSS problems with three sponsors yesterday - I sent emails to the sponsors and got no reply. I dropped them - Fuck them... I don't need to use them.

Being a newbie, I may get slammed here.

I'm testing FeedWordpress on a hidden blog, and after reading this found that yes, 2 sponsor's "Blogroll" entries just linked to their main site. Yikes. Wait, i'm just testing so I don't care yet.

In Wordpress's BLOGROLL just edit the link. Wordpress & FeedWordpress store the RSS link separate from the referral link, so all you do is ONE TIME edit the NAME of the program (I got "XYZ's FHG" as the name by default, which sucks) and then edit the ADDRESS (not the RSS address) and you're back in business.

Takes under 2 minutes when you setup the feed for those that don't do it properly, or who give you an ugly Name (keywords!).

Hope that helps someone.

feedwordpress: Go into the feed section, and manually edit the URL for the contributor. Do the same thing in your blogroll. End of problem.
