Unfortunately one must be a resident of the USA/Canada to become a client of 1&1 Internet Inc. This includes only residents of the 50 USA states and not residents of offshore territories and protectorates.

As a result, we will ask that you provide us with the proof of your USA or Canadian ID. This documentation can consist of:

Passport
Green Card
and/or Drivers License/State ID

For a domain and email check these guys out. We have tested them out for a month with 30 active sites with no bumps on a virtual account.

Fris, I suspect they have been scammed over and over by, umm, certain "eastern block countries" and famous webmasters from places like Turkey and such. I think their restriction is reasonable and good.

However, they would need to learn that in requesting ID from a Canadian, they might have to comply with Canadian privacy laws.

i was going to put some domains there a while back, then i did research on them and heard horror stories in regards to their renewal process, with them sending you into collections if you dont renew a domain in time.

The reality is that for at least some parts of the web, the wild west mentality is all but over. Some companies are realizing that they could end up on the end of lawsuits, and are attempting to limit their liability. Directnic (although run by people I know) has proven in the last year to be very hard-ass when it comes to certain issues, and I think they are one of the more strict.

i can understand being a little overprotective but they arent a host .. their liability is slim slim.. I have never heard of a registrar being sued over something a customer did with his/her domain.

I dont expect wild west , but i also dont expect to get denied buying a domain when i can reg it fine anywhere else. if it had a questionable word i might understand a bit more.

otherwise just go to namecheap/enom, tierra.net .. and be happy.
don't use that german crap ;)

@webair: registerfly is no more. ICANN finally fucked them..!

Smokey, at this point, any time a DMCA notice goes out, a copy goes to the registrar. They, like anyone else in the chain of hosting, facilitate the violation of the copyright. There is action they can take to limit the infringement (deactivating the domain).

In all things, you are presumed innocent until notified, and then after that, the liability ramps up from there.

i agree ,then why the holdup... if theres alreadya a process in place to take care of it then why would they turn away customers.. ?

were not even talking about dmca.. im just talking about me going to register www.gdfg78dfg.com and them denying my request based on something..

dmca is a joke anyways , you and i both know if i filed a dmca against google they wouldnt gank google's domain , they would assume them innocent until i proved them guilty , if my site was www.fuckplace.com and google filed the same dmca against me mine would get ganked..

case and point was the guy who had his domain ganked with no warning over questionable aged pics that turned out to be 2257 compliant content.. instead of admitting " we used our personal judgement " etc etc they chose to use the " we got a dmca complaint " etc when we both know google itself has questionable pics and nobody ganks their domain, if i complained about a pic on google , do you really think if directnic was the registrar they would gank gfy with no warning until gfy proved the age of the girl in the picture ? i think not
