Most of the people Kimbo faced were chumps that didn't know jack about fighting, and had little fight in them (the fat Chicano guy was a pitbull, but a stupid, unskilled, out of shape pitbull). In any case, you really have to be stupid or desperate for money to fight bare knuckles like that.

And come on, underground cockfights and dogfights at least have some semblence of an actual ring.

Good for Kimbo that he is stepping up to organized fighting. I wish him well, but he better have a lot better stamina than he displayed in the videos I saw.

As for the fight with Mercer, even though Mercer is getting on in years as a boxer (and he looked pretty shot last time I saw him fight), if it came down to boxing, I'm pretty sure that Kimbo would get schooled.

Mercer appears to just be doing this for a payday, as he did in the K-1 matches which he lost. I saw he was supposed to box with Hasim Rahman on June 14th, so that suggests that perhaps his boxing match fell through, and this is just an exhibition which he may not be taking seriously, in which case this may just a set-up to make Kimbo look good in his debut.

BTW, did anyone notice that Tommy Morrison is back in boxing? (Mercer earned his Heavyweight title defeating Morrison - Morrison retired years ago after supposedly testing positive for HIV).

They have been showing the replay of Morrison's first fight back pretty regularly on the Versus Channel. He looked like shit until his big left hook bailed him out. I admit I was a big fan of the guy back in the day but the Mercer KO was fucking brutal. His fight with Donovan "Razor" Ruddock was really entertaining.

Morrison almost always took a beating, even in his victories. Defense just was not in that white boy's vocabulary or arsenal. One fight in particular that he lost, was the fight in which Ray Mercer had him slouched on the ropes, and Morrison took a terrible beating - that fight led to referees steping in faster to halt bouts on a TKO, although that one should have been ruled a TKFO...

With that said, I disagree with you. I'm a grappler, first and foremost. My game has been leveled out, I feel I'm a very competent striker now, and my Muay Thai has caught up with my Jits. I don't even consider myself that gifted of an athlete, just have alot of drive and determination.

There are alot of if's in this equation. One thing everyone seems to forget is that during Kimbo and Gannon's fight, Kimbo went in for a shot, and took Gannon down with a double leg. Gannon actually trains MMA.

If Kimbo plans his training for this fight, and fights his plan, Mercer has no chance if it goes to the ground with a ground and pound.

Don't worry Ray Mercer will know exactly what to do and won't get ground and pounded.

Ray Mercer is going to be training with my crew down at Atlantic City Mixed Martial Arts.

Ray is just gonna need the basic when it come to the ground. Good hip movements, escapes and how to get back to your feet.

I am going to shoot in on him hard and drive him to the mat until he gets a good sprawl.

Hopefully, he gets a good grasp of the basics within three months.

This should be a nice good ol brawl.

Awesome man, it's great to see Mercer is taking it seriously and is going to train all facets. The more I think about this the more excited I am to see it. I might have to drive down to AC and buy a ticket to watch this live :thumbsup

From Atlantic City Press.

Former heavyweight boxing champion Ray Mercer was sitting ringside at the Tropicana Casino and Resort two months ago, watching with boxer Arturo Gatti, adult film star Jenna Jameson and 2,000 screaming fans as two guys wrestled, kicked and punched each other inside a steel cage.

“I used to watch MMA (mixed martial arts) with my kids on TV and I never thought I'd ever be doing it,” Mercer said Wednesday from his home in Fayetteville, N.C. “But then I saw it in person and I was sitting there thinking, ‘Man, if I was in there right now, I would have already knocked that guy out.' ”

He is about to get his chance.

Vineland's Felix Martinez, co-founder of Cage Fury Fighting Championships, announced Wednesday that Mercer has signed to face underground street fighter and Internet legend Kimbo Slice at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall on June 16 as part of Cage Fury Fighting Championship 5.

As soon as it was announced, one Internet site that specialized in MMA events reportedly received 30,000 hits in an hour.

“It's gonna be huge,” said Mercer's advisor, Matt Howard. “They are going to configure Boardwalk Hall for 12,000 and I'm telling you it will be a sellout.”

The bout will feature three five-minute rounds and will follow the universally accepted MMA regulations established by the sanctioning New Jersey Athletic Control Board. Ticket prices have yet to be announced. Martinez is also negotiating to secure a casino sponsorship and to have the fight broadcast on pay per view.

Martinez confirmed that both fighters will earn $50,000. The winner will get an additional $25,000 and Martinez will also pay $10,000 for a knockout.

“Ray approached me during our last event (on Jan. 19 at the Tropicana) and said he'd be interested in doing something with Cage Fury,” Martinez said. “I spoke with our matchmaker, Gary Marino, and he immediately suggested a fight with Kimbo Slice.

“It should be a real interesting fight. Slice is an Internet legend and claims he's the underground world champion. But it's different when you have to follow the MMA rules.”

According to mixed martial arts Web sites, Slice is a 31-year-old from Miami who was released from prison almost a year ago after serving 10 years for an unspecified crime. Since getting out, the 6-foot-2, 260-pounder has made a living by charging opponents $5,000-$10,000 to face him in bare-knuckle street fights at various locales.

A series of videos online show Slice arriving in a backyard clad in nothing but a pair of sweatpants and battering foes with names like Adryan, Afro Puff and Big Mac with dozens of punches until they finally submit.

He is unofficially 9-1 with his only loss to Boston's Sean Gannon, though Slice later claimed that Gannon used mace during the fight and also relied on MMA tactics such as elbow strikes that were supposedly against street-fighting rules.

Mercer, who won the gold medal in the 1988 Olympics, watched Slice's videos and was not impressed.

“I know he's supposed to be some sort of great street fighter,” Mercer said. “Well, we've all had street fights. I had enough of them in my life that I know what to do in there.

“I can see that he's strong and all that, but I don't think he's ever fought a boxer, let alone a former Olympic and world champion. One punch with four-ounce gloves is all I'll need to take him out.”

Slice has reportedly been training in Miami. Mercer is due to arrive in Atlantic City over the weekend and will work out at the Pleasantville Rec Center with boxing trainer Mike Hall and Howard. He also will do some MMA training at the Atlantic City Mixed Martial Arts Academy at Oceanside Gym with Joe Diamond and Dave Sirota.

This will mark Mercer's third go-round with a non-boxing event. He twice ventured over to Japan to compete in K-1 events and “got the (stuffing) kicked out” of him by martial arts experts.

He decided to try MMA after a series of boxing events fell through, including a scheduled bout against former champion Hasim Rahman.

“I want to be on TV and I want the excitement of fighting and I wasn't getting there with boxing,” said Mercer, who has not fought since losing to Shannon Briggs on Aug. 26, 2005. “I'm a competitor and this gives me a chance to compete again.”

Fucking AWESOME!!!

3 months, is more than enough time to be able to defend and get back on his feet.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this fight now! :)

Digipimp 03-22-2007 09:43 PM

last thing a boxer loses is his power. mercer is going to smash his dome in. people make fun of his fights in k1 but dont realize the two guys he lost two were big name k1 fighters and the quick ko he suffered happened to be to the k1 gp world champion who has beaten plenty of big name fighters. they didnt put him in with warm up fights to build him up, they set him straight up against their better guys.

AsianDivaGirlsWebDude 03-22-2007 09:45 PM

If the fight isn't fixed and Kimbo doesn't take out Mercer in the first minute, then Ray should hand Mr. Slice his ass...

I'm buying into the hype and will watch it.

I have a broken nose right now, but you're still welcome to come over and roll with my boys Jeff Glover and VJ Kwity. We'll tell the board how you would have done against Kimbo ;)

He's not 'almost' elite, he's the real deal. 130 lbs and he takes me out how he wants, when he wants. Crazy.

you still have my number right? also didnt I read that your nose is broken from surgery? and was it a sugery for consetic or medicle? I am addicted to nose spray like big time and they say I will need the surgery wondering how it went for you

1215 03-23-2007 12:19 AM

a 29 year old and an old man?

could it be any more lame?

find a younger guy for kimbo to fight.

we want a good match, not some old guy fighting a 29 year old.

cmon guys, mercer can dress up as the black santa and he wont even need a gray haired wig or fake beard - he has his own.

It was broken in BJJ and I didn't know it, and they had to rebreak it because it healed wrong and I wasn't breathing right. no FUCKING way I would undergo surgery for cosmetic reasons, that shit is terrifying. The recovery is a much bigger deal than you would think, I won't get to do any hard exercise for probably another six months. Just hit me up on icq when you're ready to roll.

I am chauncy 04-07-2007 02:55 PM

watching the Mercer vs Holyfield fight on classic boxing which was a 10 round split decision war and I am now more confident that there is no way that Kimbo with a couple of months of training can even stand in the same ring with this guy. Mercer not only took Holyfield's best but also gave Holyfield the worst beating of his career turn turn to ESPN and watch the Mercer vs Lewis fight which was another that went the distance then tell me that you think Kimbo has a chance
