Well I guess I can officially say that I am smoke free. They say it is a day for every cig-a-butt you smoke in a day. I used to smoke at least 40 a day I have not had a cigarette since January 16th while in Vegas for the show.

I have not cheated nor used any outside stimulants, quite smoking devices, or gimmicks. I quit cold turkey .

I was one of those that really enjoyed a cigarette and hated talking about stopping but knew that it was killing me.

At 42 I knew that I was going to have to choose a shorter unproductive life with cigarettes or the possibility of a longer healthier life without cigarettes.

So I have some tips for those that would like to stop or have been thinking of it that may help you.

1. YOU CAN DO IT. If I can do it, believe me, anyone can.

2. Keep it away but do not be anal about being around it. I hate the "california mentality" of smoking. do not be one of those that is an ex smoking asshole. If you are quiting you are going to be around it. accept the challenge and face the smoke. I was fortunate in that I did not have to be around it much in the beginning however I did go to the XBiz show and I was around it. I never once avoided being around the smoke. (actually liked it Thanks Bangwang and Mitch) I accepted that challenge and it made it easier to deal with.

3. Have sugar free or some kind of candy, and or something to take your mind off the cravings. (kicking the dog does not work all be-it fun)

4. Reward yourself. for me I got a new car

may be a little much but WTF.

5. It is a cliché but remember that "this too shall pass" and it does get better.

6. when on edge and grabby stay away from those you love. They did not do this to you. You did. Take it out on something or someone else.

It's really to be admired that you can make it to forty days... I tried to quit once but it was just because I thought I should.

They say you can only really quit if you want to.

Thanks for the tips... I unfortunately am not yet feeling the urge or need to quit (just got a clean bill of health from Doctor McKoy too! which is NOT encouraging me to quit lol) BUT I do know some who are considering it.

I thought about cigars and I felt that as long as I was trying to get the nicotine out of my body I was not going to smoke anything. Now that I am getting rid of the nicotine maybe I can allow myself a cigar.

But truth is I never really liked them. There are a few exceptions but I never remember that name or type of cigars that I like.

Congrats for a HUGE accomplishement! I have been smoking for about 12 years now and I did quit here and there, a few months, once more then a year and even the last time was more then 2 years! Well I was stupid enough to start again and now im hooked like I never was before...

I am thinking of quitting again soon. Next time will definitly be the good one. Hope I wont get too fat LOL. I hope you remain a non-smoker!!

Congratulations from a fellow smoker! I think its a lifelong battle and you're definitely on the right track. i've cut down to six a day (a little more at shows :P), and am trying to get into the mind frame to cut the ciggies entirely.

Killer dude!!! I did the same thing cold turkey.. my only advice you have to really want to quit and commit. Shit I was a bartender when I quit and had to work in a smoke filled bar 3 days after I put out my last dart.

Awesome Dan,

I too am working up the mind-set to quit...again. I say "again" because I have quit two other times...for extended periods. I quit once for 2 years and once for over a year, and then like an IDIOT started back up. I said "hey...I can have just ONE cigarette once in a while". Nope...doesn't work that way.

My problem is like MediaGuy said...I know I SHOULD quit, but I don't WANT to quit...and the WANT has to exceed the SHOULD.

Let me add one more thing. I just got a $500,000 life insurance policy (I'm 52 BTW). Because I smoke, it cost me almost $300/month. If I had NEVER smoked, it would have cost about $115/month. That alone should tell all of us smokers something!

I smoked and i had to do the same thing. Cold Turkey. It was the only way to go for me. If i didn't go that route than i never would have made it. It's been many years since i touched a cigarette and as time went on i didn't even have a want / need for them anymore.

Nice!! yes if I was to add up all that I am going to save I/E Life Insurance, health insurance, cost of the smokes, it probably paid for the new car. that is why you should reward yourself.
