This is so true. Working from home isnt a "real job" in many peoples eyes, yet when you try to explain that there is almost always enough work to make you wish there was 48 hours/day, they think youre just full of crap. And spending all this time selling PORN as well.
Hell even when sleeping I dream about optimizing my google adsense campaigns.

I'm going to jump in on this rant...
For the past umpteen years, I've had to deal with this as we all probably have. I'm working, and I'll be kindly interrupted by anyone surrounding me to take out garbage, fix something in the house, ask questions about their personal computer issues, go to the store for something, etc. It seems the concept of me sitting at a desk with a computer doesn't count as "work". Noone will ever understand you're working unless you're A) in an office or B) at some manual labor job. Your family, friends, etc. don't care you're making money off of your box of PCBs and metal. It sucks, believe me. I turn the music up so I don't hear the knocks on my door, believe me we're all there brother. Not to mention I sit in front of this little box from 5AM until 8PM most days.

My gf's dad still gives me a hard time... for the most part, he forgets. I can convince him one day and then a week later, he still thinks I'm just sitting on my ass and having fun all day.
As soon as he opens his mouth, I immediately swing the laptop around, hand it to him and say "here, you do it then"
The look on his face as he stares directly into the code of a php file is priceless.

Great post and I think almost all of us feel your pain or have felt it at one point in time. I actually had a friend make a comment the other day to another friend saying that I fuck around online all day because she see's my MSN on for 12-16 hours a day. Luckily the friend that she said it to has a clue and told her it's my job and that I don't sit on MSN chatting to friends all day. Like wtf, she's been to my house, knows that I work online see's that I have shit. No unemployed person on welfare or EI or what have you (that is not retired) is not living in a .5 million dollar condo strutting around with Chanel, Louis Vuitton or Prada etc...My family as in parents know that I work online, it took a while buy they get it. The rest of them well it doesn't matter...
But to assume that I don't do anything or that I have the "easy" life or that their job is more demanding than mind can suck my dick! Just because I work from home doesn't mean that I can just take off and do shit when they ask, why? Because I am working. Sure my hours are flexible, but if you have a lunch hour at 1pm and want me to meet you and I can't, it's not because I am playing video games or downloading music...jerkheads! lol. yep, get that problem all the time. before i moved i used to have my old friends come around any time of the day or night thinking i could hang out whenever since they think i can just work whenever. and sure i can to some extent but if i never work i never make any money.
thats one major thing they don't get. a lot of people can go into work, do their little tasks and fuck around the majority of the time but if we don't work, we don't make the money. for the most part its a commission based job.
also IM's is a good point. my girlfriend is always saying im chatting to whores and sluts on there but its just business contacts im talking to.
my friends used to get pissed off when i would tell them how much i was making (this was back in the early days) so i stopped. now i'll just make up some fake number about how much i earn and how much i work. its just easier.you don't know you're wearing a leash if you sit by the peg all day..Comment
