More than happy to be a Non Tipping Australian.
Tipping should be out of choice.

edit: forgot about taxi drivers, I always tip them because when I am in a taxi it always means I am drunk.
The bathroom attendants probably piss me off the most.

The bathroom attendant deal takes it to an entirely different level.

I am sure many of you have heard of KROQ in Los Angeles, it is the station that put Sublime on the map. A couple years back, their morning show was about tipping. Not one person that called in, or on the show, thought the bathroom tipping situation made any sense. One of the DJ's said he refused to tip them even when they refused him soap.

It's just dumb. How many $34 bottles of Grey Goose do you have to turn for a $300 profit before you can afford to pay your bathroom attendant enough to not need tips?

And it goes beyond the actual money, for me, it is just a pain in the ass...standing in a bathroom trying to work out what bill to give the guy...and of course, you GOT TO MAKE SURE HE SEES YOU or the tip is nill and void.

I tipped the cable guy but b4 he started working and we were doing the walkover of what was wrong , i slipped him a $20 and told him to check out the signals and lines and such...

Well he went above and beyond man this was like 2 years ago , he swapped my modems for the newer shit , redid terminations , boosted some shit up on the pole and so on...

When I was a waiter in Hollywood, I bought off everyone. I bought the bartenders, the hostess and the busboys. And they made me more money because of it. I got to pick out who they sat in my section, the busboys ran my food from the kitchen before other entrees went out and they cleared my tables first, the bartenders got my drinks out faster.

I get that. Getting extra. How life works.

But if your job is to make a cappucino, why on earth should I feel I need to tip you for making one? Should I feel guilty for ordering one and making you run the automated maker? Did I get tipped when I flipped burgers at McDonalds?

Is it not the movers job to move you? You act as it's no big deal to tip them when it's their job to move boxes and furniture. So why not tip the cable guy if he did a good job?

Dude, I tip the movers because I think I am supposed to.

I don't tip the cable guy because I don't think I am supposed to.

Cultural man.

How many of you tip a mechanic? Most people get "a mechanic" after a while. Somebody they trust or somebody they like for whatever reason. How many of you tip him? My dad has been a mechanic for close to 30 years now, he's never told me of being tipped.

I tip extra good anywhere I eat often. I tip the girls at my hair place. To me, that makes sense. I go there all the time, the tip theoretically should get me better service, and it really does get me better service, especially at the restaurants. But things like movers, utility people, mechanics, gardners, house keepers... so long as they're getting paid, which they are, and I treat them like a human being, which I do... why should I be throwing out an extra 5, 10, 20?

Here's one thing I love... trying to tip someone and they can't take it! Its great! I've tried tipping people at the grocery store a few times because they went out of their way to help, putting groceries in the car, etc, and they aren't allowed to take tips.

A cable TV worker in Orange County where homes are $500,000 gets paid $15 hour.

Last time a cable guy worked at my home I gave him some cokes and $20 for the great job he did hiding all the cables. As he left he gave me some extra USB cables and two extra remotes.

That girl who brought you the coffee makes minimum wage. In fact, in a lot of places, she actually makes less than minimum wage as her income is supplemented by tips.

The cable guy, however, is probably making upwards of $20 - $25 per hour, unionized, with amazing benefits and great job security.

I have no problem tipping a waitress, a bartender, a taxi cab driver, a stripper, a delivery guy, etc.

I hate tipping people like the bouncer at the strip club who simply shows me where to sit, or the guy at the taxi stand who opens the door to my cab, or the girl at the door who charges me $5 to get into the club.

Seriously, you Americans get raped by this tipping scam. You might as well add an additional 20% tax to your income. You seem to somehow manage to convince yourselves that somehow its your responsibility to pay the employee that is serving you, rather than their employer.

You got it all backwards.

Not sure about other states. But here they are required by law to be paid X amount if they don't make that much in tips.

tipping is hard to understand for us Aussies..

Here you don't tip anyone.. you just pay the price on the bill. If you choose to give the taxi driver a few dollars more or leave the change with a restaurant, it's genuinely appreciated. But importantly, no-one expects or demands it.

I much rather like tipping in this environment.. as opposed to being 'forced to tip' - it's not a tip if it's mandatory imo, you gotta earn it through good service, and even then it's entirely up to the customer.

My 2 cents...

My absolute favorite is when the gratuity is already added to the bill. I'm usually a very generous tipper when it comes to getting good service, but I just find that insulting. So much so that I've made a point of telling waiters that their employer took money out of their pocket because I'd have given them more than what they put on my bill and I refuse to give them any more when they've already told me what I SHOULD pay.

That actually happened to me in Vegas by accident this year. I won a poker tournament and I ran into a great dealer that dealt me the entire first day. He called me over at Paris Paris. It turns out he was a pitboss over there. Without thinking about it, I reached into my pocket and handed him a $100 bill and told him, I was going to give him that, but he was gone by the time I got my money. After I handed it to him, somewhat aided by the look on his face, I thought about it and asked him if it was okay that I gave that to him, him being in the position he was in NOW. He looked at me, looked at the money, thanked me profusely and told me he can't accept it now, but it was a great gesture.

That's the only time I can recall it ever happening to me and while it saved me $100, he was probably the ONE guy in Vegas who I WOULD have liked to have been able to tip.

Sorry. You used trust and mechanic in the same breath. I find that humouous.

Mechanics have a reputation for not being entirely honest (I like to think I've contributed to this reputation because of my past experiences). If I ever DID find one that I felt was being 100% honest with me, I probably would consider tipping him though, partially because I'd want him to STAY that way and partially because I'd consider him somwhat of a freak of nature.

Because wait staff min. wage is $2.18! I always tip 20% and if the check is $5 or less a dollar a person. If the food or service was bad, I speak to a manager.

No one tips workers in TEXAS. I've had tips refused from:
Flower Deliveries
Circut City
Funiture Set Ups
A Lawn Guy
Grocery Bag Boys

I refuse to tip
The person who hands me food or beverage that I had to stand in line to get. WTF would I tip a Starbucks counter girl for, doing her JOB?

On Long Island
you tip EVERYBODY, even..

The Mailman
UPS guy
Trash Collectors

I remember my parents gave the mailman a bottle of scotch and envelopes to 10 or so workers every Christmas. Every year we gave presents to all the Teachers. Do they still do that?

Amazing what happens when you don't pay your workers a living wage!

It never occurred to me to tip a cable guy... but now that you mention it, when the guy hooked up my cable in Orlando he kept hanging around and talking about how he really hooked me up with a hell of a deal. He told me not to tell anybody he did it.

yeah the bathroom attendant thing is just creepy to me. i don't want some guy standing around while i take a piss. must suck when someone has to take a dump in there, for both parties.

The bathroom attendant situation is weird because in most cases they don't actually work for the club. They are entrepreneurs who buy their kits from some company and then they make arrangements with the clubs to go in and hang out in the bathrooms. As far as I know, the only money they make is if they do get tipped. I only tip them if they give me earplugs or I use their hairspray, or take something that would not normally be in the bathroom anyway. But I can get my own towel, thank you very much!

I just had cable installed and the guy was super friendly and did a hell of a job. The cables are tucked away and he installed through the ceiling etc. Did a great job.

I did not tip him and he did not expect one. He simply did his job.

I never tip the gas guy. I'm not sure I know anyone who does. You can't pump your own gas in jersey anyway.

I always tip the gas attendants. Specially if I ask them to check tire pressure, oil, wash windows, ect.

I also tip my mail person each year. However I would not tip the cable installer.
