Is it worth installing vista?

Hi
I have my hands on a copy of Vista business... Is it worth installing on my main computer, rather than XP Pro?

For some reason MS likes to give it away to people like me... (Students... ;))

Thanks

I have got rid of it, for the second time.

I had a beta a while ago and I have been using final for a few weeks.

Its really not worth it. You will be wowed - for the first 10 minutes.

Then as time goes on you become more and more pissed off with it.

As I said, I have just gone back to XP after a few weeks and I have been stunned at how fast my machine works.

It must be something I am doing wrong then - I have a high spec machine (2 gig ram, 512 video etc.) and the damn thing bogged it down.

Its meant to be XP compatable - have you tried extracting anything with winzip? 100 Meg files have been taking 30 mins or more.

I really dont lke it.

Did you do a clean install?

I'm using x64 ulitmate and it's been flawless so far. Zip's a rars extract fine for me.

Long answer: NO! Short answer: NO!

Vista is about 5% slower than XP on average even with above average hardware. I guess that's to be expected though... I'd wait until SP1 patch for Vista before even considering upgrading though honestly I'm likely to stick to XP until the programs I use simply don't have updates anymore on XP. I see no purpose on upgrading until what I use becomes obsolete.

I have Vista Ultimate on three computers now and I totally love it. I do recommend that you buy the full install versus the upgrade and the reason is, if you ever have a problem and need to format for whatever reason, with the upgrade disk you'll need to reinstall xp first, then vista... gay I know.

Buy the full version, upgrade to it and enjoy!! Make sure you have a good video card and lots of ram!!!! BTW, it's not slower.

It is a bit slower than XP, from 1-5% depending on what you are doing with it. Some things though, Vista actually has a leg-up on.

It really depends. I don't know how your able to notice a 1-5% difference in performance but I will tell you that on the three computers I now have it running on I have noticed an improvement.

Maybe it's because I am an MCSE/MCSA and I have a leg up on configurations or something else but it does run faster for me. In reality it all depends on the box you’re running it on, but the one thing I like the most is I am now able to use the 4GB of ram installed, versus XP only being able to utilize 2GB. That in itself is pretty important for the multiple, memory intensive applications I run.

To give you an idea, here are the systems I run that have a better overall performance running Vista Ultimate:

System 1:

.Intel Dual Core 3.2Ghz Processor
.4GB Ram @ 667Mhz DDR2
.4 500GB SATA 10k RPM drives
.2 NVidia 7900GTX TOP cards (512MB VRam) in SLI config.

System 2:

.2 Intel Dual Core Xeon Processors/SuperMicro motherboard
.6GB ECC RAM
.2 146GB 15k rpm SCSI Drives
.2 73GB 15k rpm SCSI Drives
.1 NVidia 7900GTX 512MB VRam

* Obviously the systems I run are higher performance machines and anything will run well on them, but Vista Ultimate improved system performance per benchmark software.

Now, I have an AMD Compaq laptop that is about 2 years old, and since installing Vista Ultimate, I have noticed a little degradation in performance. Reason is it only has 512MB Ram and a 64MB Video card. In this situation it is obvious there will be less performance.

Yes it does. You have to know how to setup operating systems, default windows installs are always a bit bloated and clunky, even 2000.

Vista is the same way, I can see how it would annoy the shit out of the average user with a default install. Especially the user access controls, and I think it had something like 60 process's running at first from all the unneeded services that enabled by default.

Vista may be slower in some benchmarks for now, but so was XP when it came out. When XP launched the gaming community hated it and swore to never leave 98se
Of course once hardware caught up that changed.

One of the things Vista excels at right now is multitasking. It uses more ram because it caches more, but it also makes multitasking instant.

I am running Vista and so far I like it allot, seems faster then XP to me.

It seems like the only ones who dont like it are the ones not using it or the ones who are/were using beta versions.

Been using it since the early betas. The release version sucks if you do the upgrade. It works way better on a fresh full install.

I didnt have any driver issues with the release version as I did with prior betas. So it is improving! lol

That being said, I wont use it full time on my main machine for at least a few more months!

Does anyone know what the difference is between the 32 Bit and 64 Bit Version beside just speed improvement? More headaches or not with 64 bit etc...

I have the following system.

.Intel Dual Core 3.2Ghz Processor
.4GB Ram @ 667Mhz DDR2
500GB SATA 7200k RPM drives

How do I know if the 64 Bit version will work and is it worth doing?
I decided to purchase a new C Drive and try it out. If it doesn't work I will just install my old C drive with XP and be back in Biz.

FYI: I also bought the full Install OEM version of Vista ultimate for $199 from Fry's electronics.

Actually there is no speed improvement at all. Furthermore, your usual 32-bit applications will be a bit slower if you run them in 64-bit OS. Only native 64-bit applications, which use all the advantages of 64-bit CPU architecture will work faster than their 32-bit analogies and ONLY in case if they were rewritten right.

So don't be surprised if you notice some speed decrease when you run Prohoshop CS 2 or any other 32-bit application in WinXP 64 or Vista 64. BTW, Photoshop CS 2 works a way much solver in Vista 32/64 than if it run in XP 32/64 - that's a fact!

I just formatted my Visa Business install. It ran horribly slow and was having more problems than I wanted to deal with, random network connections dropping having to reboot to correct, applications not launching when you want them to a whole slew of problems..

AMD X2 4600+
3gb ram
geforce 7800 GT
36gb 10k RPm raptor install drive

installed vista business x64 absolutly HORRRRRIBLE
