He's not getting enough nutrients.

Start adding Brewer's Yeast into their food.

It's also a habit though, so need to train them not to with negative reenforcement. If you don't know how to do that without hitting, then look it up, quite simple..

What kinds of dogs anyway?

My oldest CJ is 9 and a boston terrier , shorty who is 5 is a boston also and moo moo (the copier ) is 3 a 57 lbs mutt some kind of american bulldog mix.
For the old man I use a senior formula innova that isnt cheap and a multi and vitamin c and then shit for his joints but this is new for a couple of months now. He seems fine but maybe a trip to the vet is in order.

Start adding Brewer's yeast. You can buy it from pet stores but you'll pay 30x of what you can get it for at say natural food stores. Add a tablespoon per meal, mix it in a bit / spread it throughout.

Please tell us they didn't learn by watching you.

Maybe you are better are with goldfish, then if they eat their feces you can flush them down the toilet. Not as easy with doggies...

it has nothing to do with the diet. some dogs do it for attention. some dogs do it to mimic their mother's behavior. the best way to stop it is to make sure the dog goes in an out of the way area and move him from the spot quickly when he's finished. he SHOULD get the idea that it's something he doesn't want to be around.

it's a behavioral issue not a diet issue.

Found this Tony:

"It is important for dog owners to know that this behavior is normal for a mother dog with
pups," adds Dr. Eurell. Newborn pups must learn to urinate and defecate. The mother
teaches the pups by licking their bottoms. The pups respond to this "tickle" by urinating and
defecating. The mother then consumes the pups' excrement, which serves two protective
purposes: it keeps the den area clean and it removes smells that could attract a predator.
Some pups learn this behavior from their mothers and will stimulate themselves and
consume their own feces. Most pups stop by the time they are weaned.

It is more difficult to understand why adult dogs eat feces. Some dogs will learn this
behavior from other dogs. In some cases, eating feces may be an attention-seeking
behavior. For some dogs it is possibly due to anxiety or boredom. Most often the
motivation for eating feces is just not known.

Owners find this habit in their pet disgusting -- particularly when the consumed feces are
thrown up all over the new carpet. In addition to being socially unacceptable, eating feces
exposes the dog to parasites and diseases. So, what is a dog owner to do?

"Eating feces is a problem that is easier to prevent than to cure," says Dr. Eurell. "Don't
allow the opportunity to arise. Keep the dog's yard clean by disposing of feces promptly.
Move the cat box out of the dog's reach. If cleaning the outdoor area is not feasible, then
keep the dog on a leash or use a muzzle when outside."

My dog does that sometimes too. I've heard there's a spray that apparently makes it unpalatable to the dog but I haven't tried that approach yet. We normally just try to switch her diet when this happens for a long period of time.

You can train your dog to do that. It cuts down on food bills and also you only have to walk them 3 times a week.

JK. There is a lot of info available..most posted here already..Good luck Tony.

Try to take it away every time he goes to the toilet. May be he will forget about this habbit sooner or later if he will not have it.
Or put a lot of pepper on it, so that ot would be impossible to eat it.

between our four dogs, we have had problems with that with two of them. not sure where they got it from or why they do it, but we asked the vet about it and they said not to worry about it. i don't necessarily encourage it and when i see them look like they might be interested in it i distract them and get them back in the house. but i guess overall, dogs will be dogs..?

My older female suddenly stopped on her own but the puppy and the older male are still eating it, but they won't eat their own.

Ariel's never eaten poop. Right now my females are the "good" dogs and my males are the "bad" dogs - mirrors real life a lot ;)
