Do you protect your content? Are there any innovators left in this industry?
So the subject of content theft has come up and I want to pose some questions to the industry as a whole.
1. How are you trying to protect your content from your surfer sharing it with others? 2. Do you think conversions would go up if an industry wide attempt was made to better protect your huge investment from being stolen? 3. How many people would goto a store and buy a rolex if they were just laying round on the street easily picked up because the store or company that sold the watches didnt bother to try and keep their product from being taken without being paid. 4. Is this industry still innovators, or are we now waiting on the mainstream technology to lead us? 5. Would you rather blame tools that are out there in order to share resources such as rapidshare, p2p, torrent files, etc or find a way to make the surfers ACTUALLY pay in order to view the material that you have time and money and resources invested in for your business. 6. Are you ready to try new ways in order for the industry as a whole to see increased conversions, or should we just stick with the status quo and allow your site to be ripped off? Ok FLAME ON! I think if people genuinely think about this and what can be done things would get ALOT better for everyone. If 5 sites are giving it away, and 5 sites are securing their content the 5 securing their content will only see improvement if they have very exclusive content that cant be found elsewhere, but if EVERYONE starts to really try and protect their content EVERYONE will start to see improvement. Thoughts? Comments? Answers to the questions above? |

you try to stop it the best you can, one of the big problems is there are big sponsors that think its ok to have affiliates that do these practices. Example you see a password trading site or content stealing forum there is a big banner promoting some big program. To me if these guys couldnt make money it would cut it in half.

I think site members are so used to free use they wont accept it , drm was supported to our savior and it really never took off. There are more people on dialup then you could imagine.

http://myspace.com/fox That is delivered auto quality to speed even midway through watching. I watch it all the time, watched it on dsl up at my parents house with half a wireless signal and still didnt buffer, but quality dropped a bit is all. Lots of diff ways to do it. Might be in your delievery, maybe just offer downloads for HD and do it DRM, or Ipod type stuff etc. Lots of options. |

i tried a site with drm.. and guess what? No one wanted to promote it. the members that bought into it loved the content but the first time there was trouble with the drm it sucked. I'm also still paying for that worthless experiment.

In all honesty...fuck DRM. Nobody is going to pay $39.99 and have to deal with DRM.
Find other ways.

I dont even think it completely needs to be a drm type thing. Could be a flash delivery for the main content, and drm on the HD and ipod giveaway stuff. Im not here with the solution, Im here to pose the question. Someone will come up with an answer or everyone is going to make less money in the long run.
