Sites that never update!

I'm looking around to replace non converting sponsors and I'm finding even more sites that haven't been updated in like almost 2 years. WTF is that? Why are those sites still available for promotion? If you're not going to update your sites, get rid of them!

Missie, I am with you. I am promoting some sites only to find out that there has been no update for them to plug since the time I placed their link in my site. I wish webmasters would take note of this and please update their sites at least once a month.

Affiliate programs can't just go around shutting down paysites due to the site not having updates. First the loss of money to revshare webmasters would burn the program. So why do we quit updating sites?

Well, MOST (almost all big programs) have a kill point for sites, something around 30 sales a day and the site isn't worth putting all the extra work into. They take the $8k in shoots a month from that site, open a new one, and hope its the next big thing - if not the cycle repeats.

I understand keeping the sites for revshare rebills. But how many rebills do you really have if there are never any updates to these sites? And why keep these sites in the current list of available sites for promotion if there has been no update in nearly 2 years?

Some sponsors have a lot of sites. When I see their lists and all of the sites have promo material, the least I expect is for those sites to be current, not years behind. Having to look at every single site I think would be a good fit for mine just to make sure the last update isn't sometime in 2005 is very time consuming.

If you have no plans to update some of your sites, take them out of your list of sites so we don't promote stuff that is already 2 years old. Only keep sites that are current and regularly updated in the promo list.

Members can cancell at anytime. So they should if the site isn't updated.
However, saying a site that has not been updated in a while should be removed is like saying that a novel should be pulled from the shelf because plenty of people have read it and it hasn't changed in a while.

And yes those sites still generate NEW rebills because not every surfer is a fucking fiend who downloads 30 videos on the first day of membership.
Many surfers download a few vids, jack off, then forget about the site for a week then log in and do the same thing. They will be just into their 2 rebill before they have downloaded 20 videos and if you kill the site they will be pissed and do a charge back.

My bookedmarked surfers sign up for whatever new site I put up right away.
Then the signups die down, until I put up a new site again. So my sign up die out even if the site is updated. Therefore, I'd rather see a brand new site every 3 months instead of the same site with updates.
The industry needs to move to "Episodic Sites" where 2 months of content is loaded and that's then end of the site...Move on to the next site.

The rebill for life model was great, loads of money was made. But surfers are smarter now and there's more choices; therefore shooting for the home run site with members rebilling for six months is like chasing old fucking dreams.

Missie!! I need to talk to you later and update you on everything ;)

And btw, these sites update DAILY. And after 10 years they're not dead so you will never have to wake up one morning and wonder if you're going to be paid or not.

I can't speak for the sites in question of course, I haven't seen them.

I do know, you do not have to update a paysite for it to retain better than sites that do update. A main paysite of ours hasn’t updated in years, and it easily out retains and has a “natural” trial to conversion rate of 30%.. That number is impossible to reach if the members aren’t highly satisfied within the first 3 days.

Another example is a site I purchased recently. It hasn't updated since I took ownership - however its trial to conversions are at 60% (with upgrades) - and its current cancel rates are lower than any other sites that I own.

Affiliate programs will release a site and within the first 6 months it rocks getting 1000’s of members, but by the end of the first 6 months the novelty of the new site has worn off – the ratios quickly hit 1:1000+, sales drop from 100 a day to 30-40, and the math starts to show its time to move on. The site will continue to get sales though, and it will retain half okay because the member gets access to 100+ sites.

I do think there is an art to retaining members better on sites that don’t update. I have tested small and large – complex and simple – and bonus sites. I like to think I have found the fine line – good enough that my sites that don’t update retain .5 months longer with trials than my sites that do update.

I am revshare program, and I know most programs are. I really don’t think webmasters should jump around on revshare programs to be honest. Pick a few sites/programs you like, trust, and have a relationship with – and promote the fuck out of them, forever. That is the only way to clean house on revshare program.

Otherwise, stick to pps – and when the trends change – you change.

Wow, that ended up being long.

Without having to create brand new sites, an existing one can get a facelift or be totally revamped with the archives intact.

There are quite a few sites I would have promoted (and I have promoted some), but the last update date of sometime in early 2005 really turns me off. It's not the fact that there are no updates for the site that bugs me, it's the actual date of the last update.

Maybe just removing that date?

Unless a site is extremely small with little content, updates don't have to be daily, weekly or even monthly. It's very unlikely that a surfer will see the whole site as is with no updates in just a month. But still, 2 years is going a little overboard.

I'm not saying that a site should be killed completely if it never gets updated and no plans to update it in the future. Just remove it from the list of available sites to promote for webmasters along with all promo material for it. If its life span has come to an end, then just keep it live for existing members.
