Strongbox or pennywize?
Been using Pennywize for a few years. Happy with it but time to have a look at Strongbox.
Who on here would say it was a better piece of software? |

As a host with lots of experience, neither. Choose ProxyPass - it will cost more, but it works all the time.

I would say PW is a toy for small sites. You need to get ProxyPass

Does Proxypass allow the webmaster to block a member who is excessively downloading content, block downloader programs etc for a period of time?

yes you take care of these things in the configuration file where you can define all sorts of rules. PP is more like a server admin tool so you might need some help but the PP support guys are really great. PP doesn't have any fancy GUI but when you're used to it you'll like it.

Seems like proxypass should be a one time download and not a subscription software.
The cost seems way too high for what needs to stop password traders/hackers. In this stage of the internet, it's hard to understnd why server companies haven't teamed up with a software product and this sort of thing comes standard with a server. It would sure make those servers a lot more attractive to paysite owners.

Proxypass is very expensive now I have looked into it. $48 a month!
Strongbox is a one off $100. Is there really that much difference to warrant $100 forever compared to $576 a year? |

That's what Im saying. It's just a simple piece of software. It's not like you are getting an operating system; plus you could write this shit yourself if you're good at programing.

strongbox is an excellent product, and many people as soon as they implemented it, have noticed a huge difference, since its harder to crack image verification, and the owner is a really nice guy.

Just looking at it from a technical perspective, Pennywize, being first generation, just counts
IPs. That worked fine up until 1998, when the crackers figured out how to use Pennywize to make it easier to crack a site. Proxypass, the second generation, added a simple proxy detection system and a Turing Image. That makes it significantly more effective the first generation systems like Pennywize. In the third generation, Strongbox of course counts IPs, has two distinct proxy detection systems, and the Turing Image, but also adds system fingerprinting, dual temporal analysis, etc. Assuming that each system was just as well written, supported, etc., Strongbox would be "best" from a technical perpective in that it does what Pennywize and Proxypass do, plus more. One other big difference is that Media Player won't stream any video protected by any system that involves the pop up gray box asking for a user name and password. Strongbox and a couple of others use a log in screen rather than the pop up box, so they allow Media Player to stream video. Also you may want to compare some of the extra features. Strongbox has things like the handoff function, the ability to use multiple password files or MySQL databases to store passwords, ripper trapping, etc. These GFY threads may be of interest to you: http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showth...hreadid=344238 http://gofuckyourself.com/showthread...=1#post6579967 http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showth...id=277500.html http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showth...id=266838.html http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showth...id=264282.html http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showth...hreadid=350731 http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showth...hreadid=352410 http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showth...=1#post6260911 My thanks to those who have taken the time to post about Strongbox. If you decide to give Strongbox a try, note the after 8 years at the same price, our first price increase will be later today. We'll be going from $100 flat to $150, so you may want to get your order in quickly.

I am using Strongbox and it works perfect for me. You get the best program for a reasonable price.
Raymor is a very helpful guy too!

I've used both and know people who have used both and sparta and say strongbox is the best they've used.
I have not used proxypass so can't comment on that one. Have no reservations using Strongbox.

loco12, I did get your order. Your name is similar that that of another webmaster
who uses Strongbox and I thought the order this morning was from him. (I didn't know your name at the time, of course). We'll get that done for you ASAP.

You may want to double check to make absolutely SURE that your videos are in fact passworfd protected and not just the HTML pages. There is a hack you can do in the Windows registry that can allow that work. If you used one of those "Windows Tuner" type programs it may have set that key. On a fresh, unmodified Windows installation that shouldn't be possible.

they are password protected, I am talking about media player files on a unix machine, sounds like your referring to a NT machine running the media player through media services?

I have the latest release of media player and it gives you the box on the first time you request the video and then it streams it, if you don't close the player and the next video is from the same folder then you don't get the box again.
