you are absolutely wrong. we live in the worlds most litigious society. its because of people who think exactly like you do and the system that allows it. you have a very backwards view of the legal system and the indirect consequences of stupid lawsuits. for example, doctors all across the USA are shutting down their practices daily because they can't even afford the insurance to operate a business. their not the only ones. you're wrong in your comments... frivolous lawsuits hurt everyone and they create a lot of victems.

in addition to that, you are talking about a pointless lawsuit where there are no real damages and only the attorneys win anyway.
How are there no real damages? Is she not hurt? What if it costs her days at work? What do you consider damages?

I agree that lawsuits are out of hand, I never said they weren't. But I also believe that there are situations where they are necessary. If someone blows up my house because they weren't careful with a firecracker, do I not have a right to sue for damages? If someone builds me a house and the roof collapses on me and paralyzes me, do I not have a right to sue?

It just seems like you want a world where no one is held responsible for anything. You can do whatever you want, hurt whoever you want, steal whatever you want, and it doesn't matter. I just fail to see how society would be better if people had even less responsibility for their actions knowing there were no consequences.

My neighbor got hit by a car 3 years ago. Broken neck, back, legs, ribs... man, she was messed up.

She limps now but she got a $3m settlement.

I don't think she should be in prison, but we need to start laying down the law on people. I'm tired of hearing 3-4 time DUI offenders driving around. I'm tired of seeing kids do anything they want with no consequences. Seriously, you can do just about anything outside of murder as a minor and get off scott free.

Side Story: In the suburbs here, a high school kid knew his neighbors were out of town so he broke in and threw a huge party in their house. They trashed everything, tore about the place, stole stuff, and basically made the house unliveable. The kid got a slap on the wrist, I think 100 hours of community service or something.

That's the reason why this shit happens.

Apparently that's wrong. She should have just said "don't worry about it, accidents happen".

Cut off a hand? Seriously, what punishment is appropriate?

You are comparing that scenario to scratches and bruising? You really think they are anywhere close to the same thing?

Are you drinking?

She should not be able to drive a car till she is 21. She should receive a large amount of community service and her parents should be fined for being bad parents.

I'm not really comparing the scenarios. He stated how lawsuits were out of hand and accidents happen. I'm just trying to see if there is anything people should be held responsible for. I'm just tired of people doing stupid shit in this world that hurts others and getting off with a slap on the wrist. Although his fiance was lucky, she could have been killed.

there is a huge difference in a civil suit where someone was significantly harmed as the direct result of someones negligence and a simple, everyday accident that resulted in bruises.

all you know is that someone got some scrapes and bruises. you know nothing else. you know no facts. you dont even know what happened. you don't know anything about the parents. you don't know anything about the kid...yet you are defending a civil suit against a 16 year old kid as if thats going to do more good than harm. is justice going to be served to see the parents, the kid and all other siblings living on the street because they lost thier house over someone getting some scrapes and bruises? thats a rational solution to make the country a better place to be? more of the same?

will be interesting to see how you feel about the situation when someone is breaking into your house, gets cut on broken glass and then sues you for it. or when you are driving along at the speed limit and someone jumps in front of your car... or maybe you will just be driving casually down the freeway and someone pulls up along side you, trying to get your attention while his buddy in front of you slams on his breaks causing you to hit him and automatically be at fault... then get sued for everything you own... would be interesting to see your views on "being held accountable" then. i am willing to bet that your ideas of "being held accountable" might suddenly become very flexible.
