What to believe?

Killer documentary.

I changed my habits after that movie, and have started doing my own research on the subject.

In the market for a hybrid car and will do what I can to help. I figure if I don't I can't complain when the world is too fucked for repair.

I can't imagine what Al Gore would have said about the last Ice Age, if he lived in that time. Would have loved to work that into his politics too, I presume.

During the Pliocene, it is believed that global temperatures were significantly warmer than they are today. Can't blame that on bad humans though, can ya?

Global Warming's pretty much a scientific fact.

The only real question is: are we to blame for it or is it simply part of a normal cycle that the Earth goes through?

I, for one, tend to think all this shit we're putting in the air has to have some effect on our environment, and anything we do is really to save our own asses down the line... the Earth doesn't need "saving", it'll be here long after Homo sapiens and every other species currently in existence are extinct.

As the film and someone else here pointed out, global warming does not mean everything heats up but rather that weather patterns can become more extreme so hot days are often hottter and cold days can be colder.

I tried finding your other post on this, cuz I know you made a huge post about it and wanted to read your side. Personally, I'm coming from:

1. Big chunks of ice are breaking off into the ocean.
2. Once vast scapes of ice and snow are melting around the polar regions.
3. Man releases tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. CO2 is a greenhouse gas. Greenhouse gasses trap heat.

I can't see how someone can think those facts are bogus, thus wanted to find that post of yours to see.

Well...it changes the climate everywhere, it moves heat waves...
Im in Montreal and it's been the hottest winter of all times. The absence of snow is just another more visible sign (although we could even get more snow since it always snows when the temp is around zero degrees - and we usually get - 30 around these times - but this year, it's still hotter than zero, all the time, so it rains).

not sure about global warming but an asteroid that could destroy totally a big city is likely to hit Earth in the next 100 years (not a specific asteroid, but just talking about statistics)

http://www.gfy.com/showthread.php?t=...light=asteroid

Quote:
How often is Earth hit by an asteroid?

More frequently than you may think. An incident like Tunguska occurs approximately once per every hundred years. Smaller ones, but easily big enough to take out a large city, occur at least 3 times per century, for example Brazil in 1930. While most of the recent recorded impacts have happened in places that were barely inhabited, we won't always be that lucky. If the Tunguska event had happened over the city of New York it would have been nearly leveled.

and for the record, such small objects are NOT monitored, so this could happen at any time

All we got was a quick sprinkle of snow yesterday morning that lasted only minutes and quickly disappeared, leaving no evidence of it even happening.

Here Ill save some time by quoting myself.

Why are their temperature readings up slightly compared to 100 years or so ago that we have records for?

1. Frequency and accuracy of record keeping.
2. Urban spread. Theres a billion or so miles of concrete and asphalt we didn't have 100 years ago.
3. They are recording the temperatures around all that concrete, and not the fields and forests that used to be there. Simple as that.

Global warming is a silly scare tactic. How many remember how Greenpeace came to be? Anyone Anyone Bueller? Bueller?

Thats right to help spread the word and stop us from going into an impending ice age due to man using hairspray too much. lol

Ozone layer? What happened with that? Did it shrink? No the hole didn't increase in size since the 50's when they first discovered it. Only shifts and changes in shape. The actual size of it hasnt changed. Yet we heard shit about it every day for years and years. Doom of us all. Every scientist agreed according to the media. We all were going to die of skin cancer due to the shrinking of the ozone layer.. Blah blah blah blah. How bout soil errosion? What happened with that? I remember hearing about that everyday over and over. All our soil was going to run into the ocean. We'd have no soil to farm blah blah blah.

Deforestation. All our oxygen was going to be gone due to us using up the trees. Blah blah blah. Feel free to let them lead you down the primrose path folks. Use a bit of logic. Ask your grandparents how hot it was when they were kids. Summers were hotter even when I was a kid back in the 70's.

Global warming is a farce. If we all die from global warming in 10 years well then Ill be wrong haha.

I think her point is, it had NOTHING to do with what us whittle humans do. A natural cooling or warming cycle is not what they are calling "global warming".

You don't seem to understand what you are talking about. The Earth has gone through many diffrent cycles in it's existance. Warming and cooling such as Ice Ages and so on are normal climate cycles that happen to the Earth over thousands or even millions of years.

Man made global warming is causing the changes to happen far too fast. Meaning something that should have taken hundreds or even thousands of years is happening in 50 years.

we are a very effective catalyst

CO2 levels going through the roof...will bring a temperature rise

who knows exactly what happens when you sway outside the natural temperature levels....we would be well advised not tot test the waters with bravado and not to discount ourselves out of being able to destroy our planet

This is true. My opinion on global warming is.... that I can have no opinion, because I'm not a scientist or someone who researched this for months, so I can't claim to have an answer regarding this.

I'd suggest everyone in this thread takes a similar approach to this.

I know, GFY has experts when it comes to global terrorism but in this case, I feel that more knowledge is required.

Cerainly the climate is changing, but exactly how much the human race is at fault....well.. from my understanding we can't say it....

In my humble opinion, when it comes to Earth problems, some more important than Global warming could be found. Although I also think that those who don't support spending money on solving global warming, probably do it mostly for economic reasons, and therefore they probably wouldn't like if their money was spent on other worlds problems either...

just a few thoughts.... and again, Im not educated enough on this subject, and Im happy to admit it

Thus, the concrete makes it warmer where there was none before, right? Your basically saying that concrete makes it warmer, are you not?

Ozone layer? What happened with that? Did it shrink?
From wikipedia: "Ozone levels, over the northern hemisphere, have been dropping by 4% per decade. Over approximately 5% of the Earth's surface, around the north and south poles, much larger (but seasonal) declines have been seen; these are the ozone holes."

How bout soil errosion? What happened with that?
Simple google search turns up this quote: "Soil erosion is the #1 source of pollution to surface water in Maine. "

Deforestation.
Still going on; again from wikipedia: "The largest cause as of 2006 is slash-and-burn activity in tropical forests. "

Isn't it obvious man's kind of fucking around with the planet and that it could be causing some changes?

Actually if you READ the news, you'll see that the warm/cold oddities of this season are due to El Nino.

And aren't you the one talking about buying your wife an SUV? Buy her a bike

Yes.

But research shows that we are speeding it up now at a rate faster than ever. Another ice age will come sooner or later, but I don't want to rush it.

I see CO in your location I assume that is Colorado. Much of the drinking water in the mid west comes from the mountains ice packs. Due to global warming these ice packs that give you drinking water are melting at a very fast pace.

As they melt there will be less and less drinking water available. I think it's something like 3/4 of the water in the Us comes from mountain ice packs. Same is true for much of the rest of the world. Guess what no more ice packs equals no more drinking water.

That's just one tiny little thing that it will affect.

"faster rate than ever"? There were scientists back 600 million years ago writing down info on how fast/slow the earth was warming/thawing? Best we can do is educated guesses, but we're so smart, we still don't know what killed the dinosaurs.

umm yea you know a big word. Now go do some research on that word and you will find out how expensive and time consuming the process is.. Much less how hard and expensive it would be to pump water from the coastal areas into the mid-west where most of our food is grown.

Actually the drinking water comes from snow, not ice packs. During the years when we have little snowfall in the mountains are the years we suffer droughts. There are very little ice packs, as you call it in the Rocky Mountains.

But global warming is a fact, its funny that the ones that think different are Bush supporters.
