That's makes no sense...

I don't understand how that is possible unless they are operating on the Enron accounting model. Got me scratching...

That's way too much capital to have invested in a company like Sirius. I predict he'll be selling most if not all of that stock soon.

it is smart. He is their marketing. just yesterday I saw a store display with him all over it.

Think about it. some one is thinking of buying the radio and they are standing in front of a display they have a choice between two. One has a star and the other you don't know. who do you go with? The star.

The article says they increased subscribers by greater than 2 million above what the analyst expected. This game is all about market share. Once you win the market then you cut costs. Think of amazon.com

They do have over 600,000 subscribers you know....

At $12.95/month minimum that's over US$8 millions a month....

thats 960 mill in a year, 500 of that is part of Stern's compensation package, in one form or the other. That leaves 460 for operating expenses. Wonder how much they lose a year?

I listen to him every day. He was saying that around 6,000 people a day sign up for Sirius. That's pretty impressive.

If I were Sirius the one thing I would worry about is the fact that he is getting older and there is no telling how long he will stay in the game. He has 4 years left on his contract. If they average 1.5 million new subscribers a year they will add another 6 million before his contract is up and bring their total to around 12 million. The question is how many of them will stick around if he decides to retire and stop doing the show? I think they are working now to add stuff that people will want in order to avoid a huge drop when he does retire. They added NASCAR and NFL and they are always putting new stuff on there so I think they are trying to use Stern to bring them in and then use the other stuff to help keep them. I'm not sure how well it will work, but he can't go on forever so they need to do something if they are going to stay alive when he does leave. They have to be worried though. Many of the radio stations he was on when he was on normal radio have all but disappeared since he left them.

The whole business model at this point revolves around getting subscribers. After they have them they are counting on being able to hook them with other content and shows. kinda like going back to dial up after having had DSL or getting rid of your cell phone. It's not going to happen. After then get enough market share they will stop paying crazy ass money for content. Howard Stern retiring at the right time would probably be good for them. The worst thing that could happen would be Stern jumping ship to the competition.

Without question. If Stern left them for a competitor they would be screwed, but I think once people have the service for a while you never want to go back to regular radio and they are counting on that. I think they will do well as long as they continue to develop new content while Stern is still on the air. Also Howard has the rights to all of his old shows. They could license them and play them and people would still listen. He has 20 years worth of shows they could keep playing even after he retires.

the expense of running the channels also comes out of that $100mil a year. so he's not making that full $500mil and I read an article a few months ago that said they already made a profit on him. they gave him 3 channels to program and he's only using 2. I also have Howard TV and love it.
