OMG - Pokie machine addiction Down Under...

- Australia has over 20% of the worlds gaming machines
- There are close to 200,000 slot machines in Australia
- 100,308 of these are found in New South Wales
- Australia's population is 20,264,082 - one game for every 101 people
- 38.6% of adult Australians play the pokies
- In 2003 / 2004 gamblers lost $16.21 billion ($9.1 billion on pokies)
- It is estimated that there are over 300,000 problem gamblers

- The average payout percentage of pokies is 90.89%
- Average chance of winning the jackpot playing 1 line is 1 in 50,000,000
- Average chance of winning the jackpot playing 20 lines is 1 in 2,500,000
- The highest jackpot you can win in a pub is $10,000
- The average player loses $380 dollars every year
- The average problem gambler loses $12,000 each year

...and soon they will be introduced in the UK, which also allows online gaming, which the US does not.

Noticeable ?

Hardly.

Fucking in your face Vegas style !!

Every pub, club and tin pot bar has them thesedays.

HUGE business. And HUGE taxes for the Government.

My mother happily pumps coins in for hours on end.

It is mind boggling.

Slots to me are as boring as all shit.

You know, down in Tassie I never see them.

Could be that we're too slow to figure out what they're for.

Maybe next time I go into town I'll keep an eye out for dumb Tasmanians standing in front of poker machinese wondering why their ciggies haven't dropped out lol

TASMANIA

Enough said.

When you actually come to the civilization on the mainland, things ARE different.

LOTS of things.

pfffftt.... don't you think I know that?! ;)

MY GOD someone needs to save me from this place.... I'm starting to think a 'happening' bar is one with 10 people in it, wearing some things that appear to be socially acceptable as 'clothes', while dancing segregated by an imaginary line that divides the floor into guys and galls.

All this after having spent 30 minutes standing in a line at the door and having a bouncer who obviously hasn't felt a chic in at least 5 years scrutinise your id.....

Seriously. Someone needs to save me. Thank GOD for Vegas!! ;)

Actually that used to be the case, but I think it was New South Wales as a whole.

When Queensland made them legal the number at the border clubs plummeted, so I think it changed then.

Could be wrong.

Fucking terrible if you ask me. I seriously think the Government shouldn't be so liberal with allowing their placement.

The Hoteliers Association were spitting chips year or so back when the gov banned smoking in pokies rooms. Revenue is starting to head back up again but it was interesting stuff.

I'm old enough to remember when casinos were illegal in Melbourne, which meant lots of blue haired grannies went on bus trips interstate to lose all their money.

I know why they don't want to move away from it, but regardless I think they should. If someone really wants to gamble than they are going to do it, and I guess they should have the right to do so, but I think like alcohol in Australia an irresponsible culture is developing, and having these things situated everywhere is just one example of that.
