100.00 Reward - Tech related XP & FTP issue inside.

Issue is FTP & SSH related.

Issue:
I can not connect via FTP nor SSH to my servers.
I can connect via FTP and SSH to other servers.

Hardware & Specs:
Dell inspiron laptop.
Compaq desktop.
Windows XP, all service packs, and updates installed.
Netgear router.
Charter ISP.
Techiemedia webhost.
Smartftp, Cuteftp, WinSCP for clients.

Checks, tests, notes:
All user names and passwords are correct.
Host is positive it is on my end. Dealt with co-owner main tech at hosting company.
Others can connect to my boxes with no issues.
I can not connect to none of my three servers but can connect to other places.
Command line ftp results in Connected, then it hangs. Does not ask for a user name and password.
Command line telnet results in connected, then it hangs. Entering anything drops connection.
WinSCP results in attempting to connect, then asks to retry or abort.
SmartFTP results in attempting to connect, connected, then time out and retries.
CuteFTP just stays at attempting to connect.
Problem is happening on both laptop and desktop.
Have tried it with windows firewall off, spyware programs off, antivirus programs off.
Have no ISP side firewall in place.
If it was something I installed it would of had to been an automatic update, since I have not used the desktop in some time and it is happening their as well.

First person by post number to correctly identify the issue and fix it gets the cash. If it goes private everyone will just have to trust me on who fixed it first. In the event no one fixes it before I have to resort to an in house tech to come and fix it, no one gets it.

Please if you are going to have me backtrack and or uninstall stuff or what not, please be fairly certain you know what the issue is and how to fix it first.

I'd say it's something with your ISP, I know it's a shot in the dark but did you call their tech support? The same problem on both computers is suspicious.

Yes, went past the outsourced division. Dealt with the smarter in home wireless people. They got stumped and pawed me off to geeksquad who can not make it out for a week.

Sounds like restriction by IP to me, but that doesn't explain why others can connect to your server.

It's most likely a router issue. Make sure you allow outgoing connections from these ports (telnet and ftp ports are often blocked by default).

Ip block in the ftp software. Some ftp software is setup in a manner that if too many attempts are made using a wrong password or for some other reason it will auto block the ip. Thats my guess.

I can connect via ftp and ssh to any other servers but my own.

Also like to note I have recycled my router, powered it down, unplugged everything. Rebooted ect.

Have you tried bypassing your router (laptop straight to modem) to see if you can connect? Or have you tried resetting router to factory defaults?

Passwords were never wrong.
Different servers and URLs on my boxs have different IP's.
Still would not work when I installed cuteftp and tried for first time.

Also wish to note I reinstalled SmartFTP.
I also installed and tried cuteftp after issue, same with WinSCP.
All with same results.

You should try connecting through a dialup ISP on the same computer. That way you can rule out your current ISP if it still doesn't work.

PC is straight to modem, will not connect. Or well you know what I mean, same results.
Router has been reset.

can other people connect by FTP to your sites ? If not, then the service may not be running.

Yeah, but usually that doesn't stop you from connecting to just one Server and allowing you to connect to all others.

I would try going through all settings and make sure all the passes etc are 100%. Check your server and make sure your ftp settings are correct. Create another ftp account and see if you can access using it.

It sounds like maybe you just need to enable passive data connections (Pasv) in your settings.

Also, it may be a routing issue. From your place to your box.

Also, what Firewall your running? Try disabling it completely and see if you can connect. I had this happen to me with Panda AV/Firewall. I could connect to everone else box, but not my own. I just about dumped my host over it also.

Everything has been checked like 10 times, being serious. All ftp issues have been gone over with a fine tooth comb at server side.

Is your server running FreeBSD? If so is the reverse DNS set? Sometimes they will hang if not.

Reboot your box. I think that might do the trick. If you havent tried it that is. Smartftp and cuteftp can be finicky at times Ive found on logins.

Or If you can login to your box and change the default ftp port on it, and then change the port on smart ftp I think you will be fine. Sounds like something goofy with the isp. Port you are using is having issues.

have you tried restoring your compture to a date where it worked?

could be something in your host file or another windows settings witch if you take your computer back to a day you know it worked you should not have an issue

Yes I have rebooted numerous times.
Why would it be a port issue that only effects my server and no others? Port 21 and 22 for winscp.

I could if you really think that could be the issue.

Curios though. Ok I can ftp in via windows explorer. Though it takes 3 minutes at each step. To get login screen, to see inside after user/pass, to move from 1 dir to another. Each step takes three minutes.

Might be the issue, but only if he's using a domain instead of an IP and that shouldn't be the case for SSH.

puzzle .....

I wouldn<t restore back to a previous date, unless nothing works....

How about downloading FlashFxp trial or FTPrush trial ...

A clean install could maybe solve the problem...

Sometimes if an isp is having a ddos or something going on coming through a particular port, or a virus that is spreading via a particular port they will block that port off the network for a while. Some people might remember this happening with the ILoveYou virus a while back. They blocked a port that is used for remote desktop on windows. Was quite the hassle. Try a port change and see what happens. If its just your isp blocking it that would explain it.

Or its possible you're receiving a attack via port 21 on your computer.

He said others could connect ... so that wouldn't be the issue .

Maybe he could give you or me an FTP temporary access to a site to really see if we do connect....

This doesn't make any sense other than his IP is blocked by a firewall.

Others not on his connection though. Couldnt it be an attack on port 21 on his connection? Or its being blocked or partially blocked by his isp?

You may also want your host to set up a non-standard port for connection (a high number port) and try that.

Some ISPs have been known to block FTP and SSH connections on standard ports at times, especially if they see a spike in bandwidth or other issues. They may block the ports, etc.

Also, if your ISP uses asymetrical routing (the return route is not the same as the route to your box) you may have a bad hop on the return that is blocking FTP and ssh traffic, but port 80 traffic is being handled differently. That is quite a bit harder to trace down.

You may want to ask your host to give you temp access to FTP to another box they have their, to see if in fact you can connect to any boxes inside that IP block... you may find it is nothing to do with your PC or host, but rather in the ether of the internet.

I was trying to help him with this last night. He can't even telnet to port 21 on his box, yet I can (and connect via FTP for that matter).

The problem is definitely tied to his ISP, router or laptop, but I can't figure out what it is. He can connect anywhere else just fine.

ASM: Sorry I missed you in IRC earlier. You weren't logged in.
