What you are describing is called a "three character" domain name, and the general answer (to the question of: alot of value?) is "no."

There are obvious exceptions such as mp3.com, etc..

I see 3 character domain names go for $xxx on a regular basis. I snag them up if I can get them cheap from those that think they are worth nothing.

The whole reason behind the increased value of shorter domain names is due to the fact that, in general, they are easier for surfers to remember. Obscure domain names that have no relevance or meaning, however, completely take away that advantage and can actually be a negative factor compared to longer relative names.
