Warning about Epassporte and your Electron card.

A few weeks ago I noticed we had nothing in our Epassporte account, which was strange as we just had a purchase paid via them on the content stores.

So on checking it out I saw lots of small withdraws I think made in Bulgaria of $66 each time. They kept it small and often so I did not spot them.

Seems they had taken out $1,000 all in all.

So check your figures on Epassporte regularly. It's done by them scanning your card and getting your pin number when you use the machine.

Would be harder for these guys to operate if Epassporte sent an email when you made a withdrawal. That would stop the problem dead.

I'm still working on getting the account unfrozen so I can pay out designers and writers. That is tougher than it would appear.

Same here, and only from ATMs I know are safe. None of those "become an entrepreneur!" looking kind.

atm's are semi safe, basically there are people out there that attach a whole new panel to your atm machine and make it looks like nothing is really different and install thier skimmer where the card slot is. Then they place a camera to get your pin and you will get your info stolen. this is an old scam but still goes on, and usually happen at outdoor (drive through) atm machines or independent machines. So to be really safe id goto a ATM machine inside a bank

That's how they got mine. I think, well know as close as you can, it was done in Bulgaria. Just a tip to others to watch their stats on the Epass site.

Will get Keyser in here.

they did that here too some year ago - every atm in holland has a plastic mould now over the entrance of the reader so theres no way you can attach some kinda fake card reader or anything alike

but when Im in another country im REALLY careful cause I know they have these tricks.

they put some plastic mould over it, card gets stuck, guy behind you says oh shit go inside ill watch the machine, grabs the mould and your card (already looked so he has your PIN) and youre screwed.

they should get what the USA atms all have: mirrors so you can see the person behind you what hes doing.

It's a general bank/credit card problem, and not unique to epassporte.

It sucks that it happened, but it could just as easily have happened with any of your other cards so I don't think it's really fair for people to pick on epassporte.

Of course if it was a normal bank, you'd have a good chance of getting your money back, slim chance of that with epassporte.

Its a known scam with fake fronts on the ATM machines that copys the info on the magnetic strip and records the pin code thats entered, we've had the problem here in Denmark as well. In most cases the bank that owns the ATM can avoid it by installing an extra panel on the front of the ATM machine.

Exactly. The warning should be adresses to everyone who is recklessly using any type of cards. Take precautions and you´ll be safe.

Yes, it's a known scam for any card in an ATM, not just epassporte, they put that small cloning device plus a small webcam to see what PIN you type, then clone your card and make withdrawals ... Just be careful esp. when you type the PIN to cover that hand with the other one, so they don't get to read it from above ...

Happened to me with my bank debit card last year. Luckily for me, the Interac network noticed suspicious behaviour when the theif deposited an empty envelope purporting to have $1500 in it, and tried to remove an illegal amount of cash (above my set limit). The machine ate the card and the bank called me the next day.

I'm pretty sure my card got scanned at a gas station - the only strange place I had used it prior to the incident.

I just use my Electron card at my bank's ATM and at local shops now.

That explain why on ATM always question "does your front look like this?"
I was always wonder why they ask that.

This really is not an epassporte issue, since any credit card can be charged multiple times, once they have done the 1st transaction.

However...

It IS wise for Epassporte to take note of this, so they can install the email system as suggested by Paul and possibly in addition to having some sort of fraud protection, like any other cards have.

I think thats where I got hit, I just had the equivalent of $1700 cleaned out of my bank account before the bank blocked my card due to suspicious activity. I am glad they did otherwise I dread to think how much they would have swiped from me. It was embarressing when I went to pay for something with my card and it was declined though lol.

Not Epassporte btw.

I use a check book ledger to balance my epassporte account. I check it daily when I check stats. Its the best way to make sure little things like that aren't going on behind my back.

Good luck getting your account sorted out.

Yes, those people are very cautious - take small amounts that you wouldn't notice at first.

On the statement it says ATM and as far as I know the card can only be used at an ATM.

It's called "skimming" and is common with ATM/CC fraud. Ask your banks fraud department about it.

Usually someone gets their hands on your card to copy it or they place a little reader that sits over the ATM machine. As you slide your card through, it reads your card and transmits to them nearby.

I've had it happen with a normal ATM card in both Thailand and Brazil. Both countries are known to have a huge problem with this. The crazy thing is, they often wait 6 months to a year to skim you, so it totally takes you off guard.
